Thanks for hauling Dan before the camera. What a gent, all the more so for his modesty, humility and praise of others. What an amazing story, even after all these years. SA aviators have a long and proud record of top-class skill and performance, sadly now undermined by...ah well, we all know...

Hi Alex. Great content. I only just stumbled upon your channel and have already watched several of your longer form interviews. I enjoy the variety of guests especially when they too are somehow involved in aviation. Boeta Dippenaar was one such guest and was one of my favorites to date. I also enjoyed this video because it reminded me of my initial PPL training days with the numerous checks. Thanks for the insights!

Alex, just FYI, at about the 53 minute mark, you were actually mixing up the American Airlines DC 10 ( flight 191) crash out of Chicago, just after take off, in 1979, ( very similar to what happened with this Nationwide flight), with the United Airlines DC 10 crash ( flight 232) in Sioux City. PS I left Spoories in 1999 😊 Very sad to see what has happened over there. Great interviews👍

An absolute on the edge of my seat interview. After leaving the British Army where I was a JTAC & also just getting my PPL I can only just start to understand how this must of felt like. Especially being in the soup the entire time plus experiencing opposite indicators of what you physically feel & also what your instruments are telling you. Mix with that not having modern tech that we have today Dan is certainly deserving of the title of supertanker hero. To me this supersedes almost all aviation emergency situations that I know of such as what happened in the Capt Sully incident etc. If this where today these guys would of been front page news for weeks. I’m so surprised that I hadn’t heard of this before & great work in bringing this interview on KZbin to be recorded in history. This channel should have many many more subs than it has at the moment. Thank you for such a great channel on KZbin & omg Dan & the entire crew should be recognised & given some kind of award at least. The skills of the crew is remarkable especially when having a manual reversal with zero horizon visible & having to trust your life in your instruments & having to fly without any hydraulic assistance. Again this entire crew should now be recognised for the amazing feat that they achieved & also thanks to the channel for bringing this story to the KZbin community & my attention. nice job 👍

Great channeling of the conversation to deliver a record of the incident. We never had to think of the airworthiness of aircraft many years ago in SA, its now necessary. Engines don’t just fall off, many failed in the work process.
