High performance teams have distinct roles. In a cycling team, there are top cyclists who will use all their energy to shield their leader. Their job is to build momentum for the team, by towing their leader in a slipstream. At the planned time during the stage, the team leader steps out of the draft and takes the victory. This victory is built on the back of the hard work done by the team mates.
Capt Laurie Graham was the commander of this flight and the pilot monitoring for the landing in New York. Senior First Officer Stuart Spencer was the pilot flying. Capt Arthur van Teylingen was the relief Captain and I was the relief First Officer. The primary crew are at the controls for the take off and landing. The job of the relief crew, is to support the primary crew in their mission to conduct the approach with precision.
The slipstream offered by the relief crew, is to operate the aircraft during the middle of the night. This allows the primary crew a rest period during their circadian low. They will then return to the controls, at the planned time, fresh and ready for final approach and landing.
