The beaches in CSM and Cayo Coco are definitely better than Varadero. Cayo Coco has a shorter drive, so you might wanna check that area out.

We stayed at Selectum and we walk to Grand Aston for the beach. Compared to cayo coco where bugs will eat you alive, we didn’t use bug repellent even for 1 day at Selectum. Will try Grand Aston next as we find very convenient to go to buffet area just on the first floor beneath the guest rooms.

I’ve travelled Cuba solo since 2008, staying in towns and cities all over the country. I have stayed at hotels in Cayo Santa Maria, Holguin, Varadero and Cayo Coco…the best beaches by far are those at Cayo Santa Maria. Melia Chain Hotels generally attract me. Varadero is ok, but the beaches are tired, worn. Holguin is country, and amazing because of the forestation, old gardens, mature trees, but the beaches tend to be shallow watered, with a lot of coral beds. For a quiet, reclusive stay the hotels are fine. I prefer Sol Turquesa. Cayo Coco, ok, but I don’t love it. I’ll keep trying. Maybe Caribe will be my next stay. Thanks for the great reporting.

Quality work. I enjoy exploring the hotels I have not yet stayed at via your content. I have stuck with Melia hotels over the past 17 years only because I’m familiar with their platform. I find repeat visits or visiting hotels of similar models saves the time I spend navigating new unfamiliar hotels. BUT maybe it’s time I stepped out of my comfort zone a little bit. I too am a solo Canadian Cuba traveller and have explored the island several times over in the 18 years on my own, always feeling completely safe, valued and cared for. Most Cuban’s value Canadian visitors, or at least those who are respectful. I have lived 6 months annually off-resort in Trinidad, Cienfuegos, Vedado, Santa Clara until the pandemic. Durning those extended stays when I became bored the my city my apartment rental was in, I’d simply book 3 to 4 nights at a resort hotel online or at a Cuban Travel Agency, hop on a Viazul and chill for a bit. The world’s your oyster. Enjoy your travels and don’t forget to explore authentic Cuba. It changes you forever. 💕 Oh, maybe you already know this, but the visitors visa you obtain when you book your flight into Cuba to a resort grants travellers 30 days to visit, however, if your Canadian you really can stay for 90 days on that 30 day visa. A day before the 90 days expires, you can renew the visitors visa at a municipal office for another 30 day pass, which gives you an additional 90 days. So it’s easy for a Canadian to stay there and travel freely for six months. The trade relationship between Canada and Cuba has never been marred by the US embargo. We trade freely and have done so since 1945. So I encourage you to take advantage of the freedoms granted to Canadians travelling and staying in Cuba. Go out there and explore.
