What you don't mention, and what I cannot tell in your video is the unit is attached, but you appear to not have any footrest attached. I ordered one and provided specific information that I had a TiLite AERO Z wheelchair and gave all tube dimensions. In order to attach this unit I need to either remove completely my footrest, or modify the footrest (hacksaw) in order to allow the lower "J" hook to clamp onto the tube. I'm thinking if I cut out my footrest material that will weaken the footrest itself, and I really don't like the idea of going with my feet just resting on a 3/4" tube as would be the case if I removed my footrest. I have a support request into the units seller......I'm not holding my breath here. It may very well go back.

Grant, you've commented this a number of times on various videos of mine. It is an unusual request and I'm not going to make a video about it, but I will try and explain it to you. Imagine looking at someone else's legs and trying to move them. That's what it feels like. There is no connection between the brain and the muscles, so when you consciously try and move them there is no response. I hope that helps.

Hi there Daniel, thanks for doing this review. I'm a similar level to you and went from Quickie Helium to Tiga. I'm due a new chair and was looking at Octane or Tiga Sub4. Just a couple of questions.. 1) Were you measured with the Jay back/cushion taken into account? 2) I occasionally push via the tyres rather than the rims - do your Ellipse 3R give you similar grip and security? Were your Ellipse rims an additional cost? 3) Octane Sub 4 v Tiga Sub 4....is the price difference worth it? Thanks
@Queenmania2007
@Queenmania2007 3 ай бұрын
Hi there. Glad you found it helpful. 1) I did have the jay back on my old chair when I was measured, and then transferred it to the new chair as I disliked the fabric backrest 2) the ellipse rims are great - the rubber grip strip is ideal for even the steepest of hills. The only very minor annoyance is catching your hand on it if going down a steep slope fast, but I really rate it. They were a bit extra yes 3) I can’t really answer this, it’s very personal. For me aluminium was a no brainer. I love titanium and fancy things in general, but I knew that my first custom chair was going to be used and abused daily, and maybe didn’t want to put a nice ti chair through that (not that it wouldn’t stand it, more cosmetic wise). The weight difference is not huge. I don’t regret getting alu so for me it’s not worth the extra price currently, but over time as I come to understand what I want and need from a chair I may change my mind

The questions of "what happened to you" "can you have sex" etc are all absolutely normal questions. I don't see anything inappropriate because how else are people to get to know you and understand your disability and it's issues? Educating others is key and there should be no taboo questions. Also about grief. When you open up and speak up about your suffering people instantly turn away because all they want to hear is positive things and you're left alone with your suffering with 0 comfort.
@Queenmania2007

I agree that there should not be taboo questions, but context here is key. I’m talking about strangers coming up and asking these questions. In that context it is overly personal and invasive, and therefore inappropriate at first meeting. I’m sorry to hear that’s been your experience with grief. Some friends are willing to listen while others, as you say, would prefer not to hear it. This is a hard condition to live with, no doubt, but I think leaning on each other for support is a valuable resource because, of anyone, we can actually understand what it’s like.
@DerelictusAnima
@DerelictusAnima 4 ай бұрын
@@Queenmania2007 Fair enough with the first part in regards to that context. But in a date setting all questions are fair game, how else are people supposed to get to know each other? I've tried leaning on my peers and at best I get "oh I'm sorry" and proceeds to act as if I don't exist anymore. It's hopeless. I don't know why people are like that.

"Once you have this sort of injury life is over.." It actually is depending on your injury. As a medical doctor you know full well these things are not black and white, but a zillion shades of grey. There's plenty of people who cannot live their lives and are forced to exist in agony without being able to do anything else simply because how serious / bad their health / injury (on going complications) state is. I wish people weren't afraid to objectively talk and show the other side of SCI reality. It's not all roses and butterflies and keeping a positive attitude..

After coming back from a short bike ride, I've taken a look at your channel Danny . It's great to see you are cramming so much into your short time living with sci. I'm glad to see you've got the cycling bug, it's done me no harm at all. Being an (Old) tetra, who has always pushed the envelope, I expected elbow and shoulder problems and I do have them but it's mainly manifested in pain, it's easy (ish, on a good day) to live with and has been well worth the experiences. Keep cycling (I'm sure you will), here is one of the videos from my channel.. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqmWpHalrZJsoLc

Congrats, Daniel! So cool to hear about your experience! As to how hard wheelchair marathoning is, I think that greatly depends on the elevation gain in the given course. Anything over about 1000 feet of climbing and it starts to take its toll the next day, at least for me (but then I'm an old fart, 55). Keep at it and don't neglect that handcycle of yours :)

This is a really good point actually, and something I neglected to mention. There were a few rises towards the start that forced me to slow to a crawl, and I was easily passed by the runners. It saps you so much because you're more or less starting from being stationary each time you push. Handcycling the same, but if I have the gears to spin then I'm okay most of the time.

@@DerelictusAnima genetics certainly play a part, but I’m definitely not gifted in any way. I tire easily, struggle when it’s steep, don’t win any races etc. but with consistency and discipline everyone can train themselves to be stronger. My constant struggle is to use only myself as a comparator - it is too easy to wish you were as fast/good as “x”, when really you should strive to just improve yourself. That’s my approach anyway

@@Queenmania2007 That's the most logical and sound approach indeed. Once you start comparing yourself with others too much and taking in what you lack too much then you actually start doing bad instead of improving because of how down that makes you (at least from my perspective).

Don't be seduced by the dark side! Kidding of course, but racing chairs are hard on shoulders -- many of the hardcore racers I knew back in the day have since ended up needing surgery to repair their rotator cuffs... not a small deal when your shoulders also carry your independence. Don't get me wrong, these chairs are incredible devices for all they make possible, but handcycles win for ergonomics over the long haul as an athlete IMHO. And cheers, Daniel -- keep up the great work on your videos! 👍

Hi Giacomo :) They're fairly common! Officially known as Foley catheters but also named indwelling catheters. As you say they are usually temporary, and in some cases can be long term, but in the case of spinal injury many opt for a suprapubic catheter, which goes directly into the bladder via the skin and abdomen below your belly button. I would use an indwelling catheter whenever I'm on bedrest (e.g. pressure sore) or need to hydrate a lot (e.g. UTI) without worry about leaking. Best person to ask would be your local provider of equipment (bowel and bladder stuff) or hospital urology department/GP, depending where you're based.

Yes, of course. I'll ask to my usual provider, they are gentle generally and easy to reach. What I missed was the idea of a semi-permanent catheter for situations like the plane, a sailboat or things like that. Thanks Daniel.
