Watching your videos has made me so excited to one day have a colony of isopods, and if I wasn't in the middle of looking for a new place, I'd start gathering things for an enclosure and searching in the dirt right now! I work with kids and am the only employee brave enough to safely relocate "creepy crawlies" and some of the curious kids wanted me to show them how to be gentle with bugs. Ive managed to get a pair of siblings in love with little critters, they're always looking for stink bugs, lady bugs, fireflies, beetles, spiders, and ants to pick up - and I was so excited the other day to find an isopod napping in the sandbox (which was moist from rain). I was able to show the siblings and they very excitedly and very gently handled it, and the little dude just waddled along their hands and arms acting unthreatened, as bold as can be. Now I hope to one day have a little enclosure of zebras I can bring to work and show them!

I loved to look at isopods as a kid. I loved catching and handling little things, like frogs, lizards, turtles, and isopods of course! Once I saw a bright blue isopod walking among the wild colony i liked to watch when we moved the dumpster for garbage day. I thought when I saw it that it was so special, and I wished I could keep it and breed it - and my dad would've let me! But I was scared of capturing a bunch, plus the blue, and the colony dying - or if the blue was some sort of disease, and that i would cause more to get sick. So i let the isopod continue on his way. I almost forgot about it until seeing the powder blue ones in this video. Isopods are so nifty.
@Aquarimax16 сағат бұрын
You were right about the bright blue isopod! It is an iridovirus, which is eventually fatal to the infected specimen.

I don't know how many times I've watched the care portion of this video. And I WAS going to try and get your input on why my Hoff colony is failing, well, failed. I only have 4 left. I think I started with about 15. I'm still not sure how I failed. But at this point it's probably too late unless a miracle happens. People keep showing me pictures of undersides of isopods with the differences. But every time I try to look my pods either won't sit still, my phones camera won't focus or I'm too dizzy to see straight (long story). Or some combination of those 3. Oh well

@@Aquarimax so, I was able to see that none look pregnant. at least no stomachs were bulging. how soon after the deed gets done does it start to show in a female isopod?

@@SanosukeSagara18 fortunately, they can store sperm to produce multiple broods…so if they have ever mated, you have a chance.

Great video Rus! Over feeding is a big issue for me when I begin new isopod enclosures as there is a smaller population and less established microorganisms. In my large Porcellio laevis enclosure, it seems that however much I feed, it’ll always be gone in hours 😂 I’ve luckily never had problems with mites in my isopod enclosures but one time I oversee my springtails and somehow a bunch of mites just showed up overnight?

What kind of lighting would you use on isopods? Do isopods do better in dark environments and do they even need light to thrive?
@Aquarimax2 күн бұрын
Most isopods (not all) in the hobby tend to avoid light, and do with fine with ambient light. In my early days of isopod keeping, I kept them all in a dark cabinet for over a year, and they bred very well! BTW, I provided an answer to your question in this video: The DANGERS of OVERFEEDING your Isopods kzbin.info/www/bejne/gqmqiXWnad2Sirs

A couple months ago, I bought 10 of these as adults(12 arrived in the little tub! Yay!) within a week there were so many babies! Maybe 20 or so! I had these all in a one gallon glass jar and decided with all the new babies I’d just put 1/2 the adults in my crested gecko vivarium- why not? At best they would clean up, and worse case, they would become a snack for my crested. I had added 25 dwarf whites 6 months earlier and wasn’t sure if they were still in there - it’s a big vivarium so they could just be hiding underneath the dirt as they do… but haven’t seen any lately - anyway, once I put these new black and yellow adults in, I never saw them again, but figured they were in there because leaves were being eaten and the fish food flakes would be gone in a day- same with the gecko shed. Skin was there before I went to bed and literally gone by morning! After 2 months I was adding a new plant and moved the giant hollow cork hide tube and there they all were, sleeping in the hide with the gecko 😂. No fear! Meanwhile, I somehow killed off all but one of the new babies. I have 6 adults and one 2 month old teenager in my original glass jar. They sure love eating leaves!!!
