Learn how to use a planer sled. In this video, I will show you exactly how to use a planer sled for a thickness planer. A planer sled enables a thickness planer to face joint boards. I will detail every step I take to flatten lumber with my planer sled. I will share with you how you can build a simple planer sled to flatten lumber in your shop. I will also explain my custom planer sled and if you are interested in the design see the links below on how to make it! I really hope you enjoy this video, take care.

I watch a lot of KZbin video on woodworking. This is the best video I have seen on how to get a flat surface to start from to get the remainder of the the piece of wood flat and square to work with for project material. ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC VIDEO.

William, I saw the plans to build the sled. Two things I noticed that I would do different: use plywood instead of pine wood. You don’t want any warping of those pieces. Second: springs? I wouldn’t use them because what you need is a fixed, stable reference point. If you use springs you can’t accomplish that.

Plywood could certainly be substituted for the pine wood, however for the specifications for this design make sure you have enough thickness in the sled to drill all of the holes and to house the dowels and bolts. The springs are actually essential for the design. I tried the sled out without the springs and the vibrations of the thickness planer rattled out the bolts. The spring helps the bolt stay in place after you adjust the height. The planer sled is fixed, the springs simply help stabilize the bolt and have no effect on the sled. I hope that makes sense!

genius idea to use dowel/springs instead of faffing with shims, good job man, thanks for sharing 🙏 ps i may plan to use this idea but its for squaring smaller boards that are around 4ft in length approximately 4inches wide, they are usually cupped, would it therefore be better to space the dowels closer together, instead of 7inches to say 3 or 4?

Thanks it worked much better than I had even planned! If you are going to go through the process of building one I’d stick pretty close to the original plans. When deciding where to place the dowels remember that you are likely going to use the sled on other boards than the dimensions of the lumber you have in mind right now. So make sure to build it with potential future projects in mind as well!
