using a totem kinda feels like cheating a hardcore world imo. the whole danger is death and losing the world forever, using a totem just removes that entirely

I agree though for a different reason. When totems were released in 1.10, they were a mighty reward for going through a great deal of travelling, a special and very rare item that could save you from death. But ever since 1.14 with raids, they're so effortless to get for the amount of power they hold. I'd use a totem in my hardcore world, but only if they came from a mansion. They're far too easy to obtain for something as powerful as it is, and it's always felt unfair to me.

There are definitely people who have lost their hardcore world while holding a totem (ex creeper falls in desert temple blows up using totem then tnt finishes off player) but I agree, it does take away a ton of the challenge.

Hey just to let you know, there's a part of vanilla tweaks where you can make the totem invisible in your off hand. It can also make food, swords, and shields take up less of the screen. Also, the BETTER advice is to WEAR YOUR CHESTPLATE. Raids are hard as shit in hardcore, and you might not have been prepared to fight one, but you HAD the chestplate IN YOUR INVENTORY; You had NO EXCUSE not to be wearing it outside of pure negligence.
