Testing out the difference between 00 and 000 buckshot at 55 yards with four different shotguns with full and modified chokes. Trying to ascertain the effective range of the two sizes of buckshot at 17 1/2 inch Shoot-N-See targets. Again testing to see if this would be effective for deer, coyote, hogs, etc. The ammo is Winchester SuperX 00 buck with 9 pellets per shell, and Federal 000 buck with 8 pellets per shell. Velocity for both is 1325.
This time we used four different shotguns, the Mossberg 500 with full choke and a 28" barrel. The Stoeger Coach gun with full choke and a 20" barrel. A Remington 870 Express with a modified choke and a 28" barrel. Finally the Savage 311A double barrel with a modified choke and a 28" also. I said 26" in the video, but they are 28",
We see how many hit the intended target at the 55 yard range. We didn't do any penetration tests, but really seeing how many of the 00/000 buck pellets we could get to pattern well on the board.
The biggest thing we again learned, get out there and practice with whatever firearm and load you attend to use.

How good is pattern (like 30yards)? And you use choke (i think cylinder bore don't take choke)?

Glad you're a tester and thankyou for longer range buckshot testing! Just a note. Try measuring from the center of the bore to the bead on the double shotgun and then do the same on a single barrel. I think you'll find that both measure about 5/8 inch. Really shouldn't be any need to sight down the barrel of the double rather than using the bead. The pattern is only going to be 'out' 5/8 of an inch, unless the barrels are harmonized improperly.

Yah... I blew a coyotes head half off with #4 buckshot and mod choke at 50-60yds (I could see the pattern and it surprised me how tight it was)... Not quite apples to apples, but I would test your hunting shells with more open chokes and see if the pattern tightens up... Tight chokes may = more pressure = more crowding = more deformation of the lead = maybe a more inconsistent pattern (blowout of the pattern)

👍55yrds is quite a reach for any shot. I shoot shotguns (have 5) and usually stay around 25yds for shot, of course the shot will travel much further. Slug maybe 50 unless a sabo in my rifled barrel, then maybe 100yds. Been told full n extra full chokes not a good idea for 00. I sometimes shoot fosters in a modified barrel even though you should use improved cyl. My .02✌

When I was a police officer we were trained to hold at six o'clock and the shotgun would hit the x-ring. We trained with rifled slug for easier grading but we also used buckshot to see the spread at different distances. We used #4 for many years on the theory of greater probability of hits. We then went to triple 0 for greater knock down. Hold at six instead of center.

Fun vid! It inspired me to go out and do some buckshot tests myself with my 12ga Browning 28" fixed full at 50yds. I used Rem 3" 00, Rem 23/4" single 0, Rem 3" 000, and Win 3" #1. The only one I would honestly count on at 50yds was the Win #1 buck with my gun. I feel confident with that load at 50yds, especially if I could squeeze off another round. It amazed me how bad the others did. Considering what I've seen and how many deer I've tracked for people, to most shotgunners 50yds is really "30yds", if you get my meaning. You really just don't know till you shoot your gun.

Great that you got out there and did some testing on your own firearm and different loads. You really have to check that and not "hope for the best" when using buckshot. Like you, I think I know my limitations and will pass up shots on anything outside of it, even if it means letting that big one go.

Here in Alabama there used to be a lot of hunting with dogs. My brother in l aw has used a lot of buckshot over the years an says 00 and bigger buckshot is hard to get to pattern well. He swears by the no.1 buffered and plated buckshot with full choke. He usually uses the regular 16 pellet load.No.4 doesn't carry enough energy.

Hey brother, that was an awesome video, I just got done putting a smooth bore slug barrel on my 870 for purpose of home defense, and then the question of what to feed itwas lurking in my mind. Lots of deer around here, it has a top quality diamond reticle scope mounted on it and shooting 5-6 inch groups at 100yds with high brass federal ammo. No need for that around here, the woods are so dense. But anyway, great video, you answered my question, thanks. Dave in Oklahoma.

I've used buckshot for over 40 years , I use #1 buckshot or 00 buck...3" mag in Remington 1100..30" barrel with full choke......no load preference. After pattering your gun with a specific load do your job as a hunter.....no stupid shots and hunt like your bow hunting with a regular bow....use your skills to get close. You have to have your own set of rules and stick to them. Keep your shots close and what I mean by close is no further than 35-40 yards....put front bead about 4-6 inches higher than what would do with bow , rifle ,crossbow , slug etc etc. I've used slugs before as well as rifles however if your shooting a deer at 400 yards with your 300 ultramag your target shooting not hunting. Wanna know my secret....I had a grandad and dad who taught me discipline and how to properly use buckshot.....happy hunting.

This is a very honest test. Thank you. My personal experiences are that buckshot doesn't like full chokes. Improved or cylinder keeps them closer together. It seems to me the tight chokes make flyers, which doesn't happen in a more open bore. But I never tested past 40 yards with buckshot.

Great test. I did a lot of this several years ago and came to all the same conclusions you have. We need to test every load we intend to use in each shotgun we intend to use it in. There can be big differences gun to gun on how they will pattern any given load. My guns all shot larger patterns with 000 vs 00 Buck. I also noticed that 3 1/2'' mag with #4 Buck had a much larger spread than the 3'' mag with #4 Buck. Somebody else may have different results. I also found some loads are more consistent than others. Sometimes out of 5 rounds 3 would pattern tight and 2 would be in an unpredictable pattern that could be anywhere on the pattern board. Sometimes box to box made no difference and sometimes it made a huge difference in point of aim and pattern density. I found the same results with slugs. Sometimes a particular gun shot 1 type well and the next did or did not. The only slug I had consistent results with in several shotguns was the Breneke slugs which generally outshot the regular Foster type slugs

This is why the only shotgun I own is a .410 with a rifled barrel. Fire three inch 000 buck out of a rifled barrel, and you get a 305 grain 5-layer bullet. I get 7-10 inch groups at 50 yards all day long.

sorry mate tl;dr 000 buckshot is .36cal & a 410 is about .42cal so there is still a lot of space between the projectile an the rifling. but if that works for you then that's fine. i was thinking of 12gauge i didn't see the 410 but still yet, 000 is .36cal an 410 is .42 cal so you would be better off getting a winchester pdx1 that has the slug that will actually touch the rifling man and then behind the slug it has 000 buckshot best of both worlds,

Seth Jackson No you just assume shit like an arrogant arshole you are, i told you i thought" you were talking about a bigger bore (12ga to be exact) not a 410. you could get the same accuracy with a smooth bore full choke 410 with 000 as what get with the rifled barrel. (example; a bb gun, if the bb is close to the size of the smooth bore then its tends to be very accurate. this is the same concept, so rifling or not, it would & should be accurate to a certain extent that is. both would be the same accuracy wise, the bore isn't much bigger then the shot, leaving no room to spread out. coming out one straight behind the other. i mean velocity from a 3'' shell might be enough to cause the shot to expand/deform that much, but i know it wont with a 2 3/4'' shell wont. it isn't the same lead that its in a soft point hunting rifle round the is extremely soft (incase you thought so). but i could see where the higher velocity from a 3'' might do so. but neither of us actually know. because you would have to have a very high$$$ high speed camera to catch as soon as it leaves the wadding & before hitting the target. lead recovered after firing would be too deformed to tell. you may see the rifling marks traceable if your lucky. Just because you think that is what happens doesn't mean your 100% correct nor does it make me 100%"stupid", its your opinion & and this is mine. if you have proof then lets see it. if you cant act like an adult and have a civilised conversation then don't write back.

It's a judgment call as to " how good is good enough " . That said , with conventional buckshot fired with conventional chokes . for hunting deer with assurance of consistent results , the limit would be closer to 40yds than 55yds . Meanwhile , did you notice that Modified is giving more center hits than Full ? Take your experements to the next logical step , and try Imp Cyl .

I've been patterning buckshot all day today. 00, and #4 buck. I was at 35 yards, because I wanted to see EVERY pellet impact. I have 8 different choke sizes. I'm shooting a .730 standard bore 28" bbl Stevens 320. Here are my results... Best 00 patterns were with .700, and .705. Best #4 buck patterns were with .665, and .680. I'm thinking my .690 choke would be best for #1 buck, just judging by today's results. My best results of the day were with the Federal Flight Control, out of an improved cylinder(.720). Get out and pattern your own gun. Nobody's is the same. And, NEVER only shoot just one shot. Buckshot doesn't exactly repeat itself every time. It's unpredictable.

I believe that the bigger you go with buckshot the less constriction you'd want. Maybe with #4 a full choke would help within its useful range. With 000 on the other hand I'd guess the chaos of the pellets squishing down and shifting around would cause a very inconsistent pattern from shot to shot, you'd probably be better off with a cylinder bore in that instance.

The Federal Flight Control buckshot is great stuff, for tight patterns. Only use cylinder bore with it. Any type of choke on this wad, will defeat the design of it, and not yield very good results. I hunt in VA and many of our counties don't allow center fire rifles and some extend that to slugs so buckshot is the ticket or use a muzzle loader. Having extensive experience with buckshot, I can tell you that 2 pellets of 000buck in the vitals equals dead deer! The same can be said of 3 pellets of 00buck. Over all, your guns did well at 55 yards which would be considered a long range shot with a shotgun.

I think some #1 buck would be interesting. Still heavy enough to give decent penetration but a lot higher pellet count. Likely no crush factor from the choke either. I think the 000 might have fared better cylinder bore or improved cylinder at maximum. Have to remember that 000 moving at 1400 fps is each one pretty potent.

+Robert kubrick Think that one may be coming up in the future. 16 pellets is a good number, and like you said still heavy enough to do enough critical damage. Thanks for watching.

You dont need slug gun to use slug, youl be suprised how accurate are rifled breneke and foster slugs out to 60 yards with regular smooth bore shotgun. Also, stoping power of full caliber rifled slug is better than any rifle or sabots at close range..

When you get to deer hunting ranges of 30 yards or more the full chokes do seem to do better. I've been patterning an Auto-5 with a full choke and found it to shoot real tight but not always where I aim. Since I am using a tripod rest and only shooting at 30 yards I feel this is a shell problem.

You may consider an improved cylinder or an open choke. The tighter chokes compress the shot and creates " flyers". This is true with steel shot not usually so much the case with lead. But hey try it. My Remington 1187 shoots a much tighter pattern with an improved cylinder vs a full or modified choke. But again, that is with steel shot, not lead. My two cents, no charge. Lol

I only use buckshot in the thicket where shots are under 40yrds pattern is not the only issue velocity ,energy and terminal Ballistics fall fast with extremely low BC value why buckshot is illegal in some states if shots are past that range best use a rifle barrel shotgun and slug or a 30-30 on up

This comment is almost a decade old, but I would like to see this same test done with No 1 buckshot. You would have twice as many pellets as the 000 buck. In particular, I personally would like to see the difference between the Federal FliteControl shell and the others in your Mosberg, Remington and long barreled savage double barrel. I think that with the three guns I mentioned while bringing down a deer, would also ruin a lot of meat at 55 yards, and like you would try to position myself to be about 10 yards closer at maximum shot range. I think it may be possible to extend out to 55 yards with the Federal ammo. I can not do it myself, but would be interested in the results. I think both pattern videos were very good, thanks for making them.

Pattern your gun....barrel length, choke/bore, lead vrs steel, velocity, shot size, brand name, load size (ounces)......ALL MAKES A DIFFERENCE. Find it and stick with it to now learn the weapons capabilities. One shot drop & kill is always preferred....patience is a must.

Based on that test, if I hunt with a shotgun, I'll use slugs. Actually in areas where center fires are prohibited, I'll use my muzzleloader or my pistol

Try 1 buck plated shot. The 00 and 000 tend to get in the way of each other. 000 buck sounds good, but you need to use smaller shot. Plated shot (nickel or copper) are a whole different animal. Forget soft lead. You can use your bead (if that is all you have) to give a rough range determination. Good video, Cheers!

open choke using flight control buck shot would have put most if not all your pellets in the black of the target with maybe just a few fliers just outside it in the white at that range and as far as the 00 buck vs 000 goes 00 buck tends to pattern slightly better than 000 buck in 12 gauge hence why 00 buck is so popular with military, law enforcement, and civilian self defense. 000 and 0000 tend to pattern better out of the slightly larger 10 gauge shot gun.

Buckshot has no more recoil than birdshot if the weight and all other factors are kept equal. If anything, I'd expect the denser group of smaller shot to kick harder, due to greater pressure resistance.

Just someones opinion, sometimes you just can't afford top shelf firearms. But like whiskey, if it's top shelf or bottom shelf, it still gets the job done.

@@whiterook85 indeed, I've owned everything from a Weatherby to a Marlin in rifles and had a couple of Remington's and Mossbergs in shotguns and various name and off brand handguns and never had a problem with any. Used an AMT Longslide .45 in a contest with my gunsmith instructor who chose a Special Edition S&W .38, don't remember the exact barrel length, ( it was at least 8 inches) we were firing from a bench rest @ 50 feet and I gave him a run for his money with that cheap .45. I had purchased it from him that very day after class and had never fired it
