Trying to work out how you did the initial insert. When I press 'i' nothing happens?

You mean "inset Faces". Okay, a couple short cuts 1.--- Pres " I " or 2.--- Press " Ctrl F " and select " Inset Faces ( I) " 3.--- When in edit mode, go to menu " Mesh -----> Faces ------> Inset Faces" The face or the Faces you want to inset faces need to be selected.
