Hi esr243, just checked the designs, whow! What a beautiful yacht! Love the straight lines and the dodger... having a centreboard in my case is very beneficial as I dock in a rather shallow area but for tacking into the wind it might not be your best option. Brillant design. Superb execution by KoopmansKasko. My wife and I have been sailing and powerboating for over 50 years. We currently own seven watercraft ranging from kayaks and inflataable (and hard) dinghies to our 37' Pacific Trawler motoryacht, in which we cruise the Inside Passage of British Columbia and Southeast Alaska (in non-Covid times). The best advice anyone even gave me was to understand what our mission really was and then buy the smallest boat possible that could fulfill that mission. This sailboat represents that perfectly. She is big enough to sail anywhere, built like a tank, yet small enough for a couple or even one person to handle. Her systems are simple yet elegant, and easy to access - though I would like to have seen the engine compartment to test that idea out. I'm sure Wind Rose will serve you well. One question - did you say 1,300 days until you go voyaging? Why the long wait? If you can go sooner, not later. Leave tomorrow. Or better yet, today. As you roam the world, don't miss the Pacific Northwest coast of North America. We have sailed many of the world's famous cruising grounds, mostly on bareboat charters. NOTHING we have seen compares to the Inside Passage from Olympia, Washington (USA), through British Columbia, to Cape Spencer, Alaska. It is 1,200 miles of incomparable beauty, much of it wilderness. One note: do you have additional nylon rode on your 40 meters of anchor chain. Being in the Netherlands, shallow water is your greatest concern. If you come to the Inside Passage, you will frequently have to anchor in 100 feet or deeper water. And your stern will be very close to shore in some small coves, so dragging anchor isn't an option. We carry 200 feet of chain backed up by 200 feet of nylon rode, and an oversized Forfjord anchor (suited to a 50 foot boat). Also, I suggest that anyone going sailing should have Steve and Linda Dashew's book on the computer. You can download them from www.setsail.com, including their "bible" the 1,200+ page Offshore Cruising Encyclopedia. If anything isn't in the OCE, you don't need to know it.
@SailingWindRose3 жыл бұрын
I've actually sent forward your comment to Harry, the owner of Koopmans Kasko's as he build what I just showed. He appreciated your comment :). Also great to read you have a bunch of watercraft. Living on the water myself we have our fare share. But currently it's just Wind Rose, our house and a very old Kayak. As for your comment on size. I know the book "Heavy weather sailing" says "the bigger the better" but with a series drogue, good planning and cautiousness I trust we will be ok. Also looking into the three basic rules for boats (will always float, can always be rigged and can always be steered) to makes sure we do what we can. Smart remark on the engine compartment. I'll try to picture it in one of the upcoming video's I'm making on the fuel polisher I'm building. It's the one thing that is not really ideal. I guess the saying, a boat's always a compromise is very true. As for the long wait, Stef is currently still in high school. Besides that we needs some more prepping (e.g. self steering wind vane, practice, anchor, life raft etc) and thus also some time to save up. Sailing appears to be the most expensive way to get somewhere for free..... ;) For your tips on routes area's. You are probably familiar with Sailing Ran. they visited that area and I was very impressed. So much so actually we did consider. But on the todo list is also getting more confident to actually make that crossing and it starts by sailing a lot. I trust the first one to e.g. England or the Nordics will be pretty remarkable indeed. So the routes you mentioned I've added to a wee little tip's list I'm holding. For the anchor, yes, the lines I also need to look into. As do I need to check the anchor and chain itself. "Various ways to get to Rome" but if I'm there I'll make video on the considerations. The Nordics in EUR have same-ish issues. Deep and near rocks and as those are on the list the todo is also :). once again, thank you for your extensive comment. Really nice to read and great to know you are following us on our wee little adventure :). Best! jan.

@SailingWindRose3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Paul. as for the chain locker, I assume you mean to enable to open it up with a hatch?
@paulvr31583 жыл бұрын
@@SailingWindRose Yes.....I have, on all my boats always had a bit of work to do unbunddling, unprodding, freeing, unheaping,.....also, sometimes storing equipment when working on a heaving foredeck, because when the action does down, that's where it often-times is! Failing that, I would ask a crew member to be available to observe the chain locker....and have a good metal or wood proder poker :-) Think dark and stormy night on a lee shore...secondary anchor, chafe gear, bridles, knives, saw, axe, spot light, gloves, line, bucket, manual winch handle for windlass, heaven forbid a towing bridle, etc.....it is a proper working locker on a cruising boat in my view, not a luxury.
@SailingWindRose3 жыл бұрын
Ah, yeah. I think you have a point there, clearly. Let me think about it b’cause that’s probably not going to be an easy fix considering positioning of cutterstay and windless there…. Thanks for the tip! Much appreciated (esp. with the recognisable examples……
@paulvr31583 жыл бұрын
@@SailingWindRose While I'm at it Jan....Do you have a wind-vane self steering? This is the single most valuable item on a cruising boat. Your transom would take a cervo-pendulum easily (Like an Aries), or an upright independent geared balanced rudder type ( like Hydrovane). It is the best crew member you will ever have, EVER....it never complains, it never eats, it never sleeps, it steers better than you, it doesn't care if the ships voltage is 11.2 on a raining day with scud in the sky, it just keep on course with the wind and you can get on with whatever it is you are getting on with :-).....the worse the conditions the better it works... You will name it, it will become family! The balanced rudder system has the advantage of being a functional emergency/spare rudder for those of us cruising with (vulnerable) spades!! (like me). You chose a great boat. Perfect size too. last note on the chain locker...I never even mentioned the most obvious piece of kit, the snubber. It would be like a 25' 3/4" 3 strand with a great big chain hook shackled on a spliced metal thimble at the end, and a sleeve of chafe gear and it's ties half way down.....you do not need to walk fwd and aft with that in hand every time you drop or lift a hook. In the locker with it's soggy stuff! also, the locker , or access to it , does not need to be conventional...I'm thinking a simple shelf below for storage, and something like a hinged tank inspection hatch/lid with simple latching. Could be circular and offset if necessary.....as long as you can reach your storage shelf, and poke at the chain below in the main locker.

Hi dulls, I can, sort of, stand straight in the saloon and fully upright if I stand in the saloon with my head in the higher part of the the boat. But, in all honesty, Koopmans are not the boats known for their height. This one is made a tad higher (and beds longer) to facilitate. It surprised me when I got in as all others had proven lower.

I well understand your argument of 'a bit of training never hurts' and 'sailing is a sport after all', and I see the advantage of the flat design of the muir vertical windlass. But it will see you on your knees whenever you're lifting your anchor, bending your back in an unhealthy way. In my opinion the Lofrans Royal horizontal windlass is a much better choice. Still without needing electricity, and working with pure human muscle power it is much more reliable than any electric windlass. I have one on my heavy 11t steel cutter and being now an old man of 64, I'm still very happy with it, also in deep anchorages with 70m 10mm chain out. When lifting your anchor you'll stand sidewise, slightly spread legs, straigt back. It's easy, fast and satisfying to do it on your own. And it saves weight of additional battery capacity .
@SailingWindRose3 жыл бұрын
Hi Helmrich, that seems like an interesting option. I'll put that one done the ideas list. I've seen what you mean and indeed seems better for the back. Tnx for the tip! ps, 64 isn't old these days he! ;)

@SailingWindRose3 жыл бұрын
Hi Lida, thanks for the compliment on Wind Rose. As for your question:quite difficult to say as the answer basically is always “yes you can”. Price wise you can literally start at a couple of thousand and work your ways up to the sky. I think the main question is, what is your level of comfort. We bought a boat which is more or less ready. It just needs the add-on’s like a wind vane, life raft, extra rigging and sails and some manual work. But this exact ship in Casco format was offered for 25K including a never used engine. Bit like cars, depending on the situation the prices varies wildly. My, just browse a lot and when it seems to be a bargain it probably is the more expensive choice. Good luck with your explorations! Ps, also check sailing Uma: they started with 5k-ish and now have an amazing ship! Or sail life, who started with 50k and. If I’d had to make a judgement, is now at 150+k on investments…

I like the protected rudder and prop, but what about that keel? if you hit something out at sea, wont it get ripped off leaving a big hole in the boat?
@SailingWindRose3 жыл бұрын
Hey DIY Oregon, the keel is actually a daggerboard (made a mistake in translation). There is only 60KG of lead in the bottom to prevent it from floating up. It sits in a reinforced box of 10MM aluminum and slides up if you hit something "from the front". Running aground sideways (e.g. due a swell) might cause it to bend but as the board itself is a hollow aluminum construct it probably just bends around the sturdy box it sits in. Up till now I've "touched" on thing and the board just slides in.

11:47 what type of beer was that?
@SailingWindRose Жыл бұрын
Hi @Knickebien1966, my favourite beer: Heineken 0.0… I know it’s not everybodies favourite, and some might say it’s not even real beer but if you are thirsty and have to do anything productive afterwards it way better than soda’s is my believe :).

Engine ?

Volvo MD2030. The latest video actually has a short bit on it but it is basically a somewhat sensitive Diesel engine with quite expensive parts… :)

What NO ENGINE ???
@SailingWindRose3 жыл бұрын
euhm,.. that is good one Ian. FYI: Volvo Penta MD 2030. I'll give her some attention in next episodes. I guess the best thing I like about her now is when you turn her off when under sail. But I'm taking good care of her because you appreciate a running engine most when you need it most I guess...

@@SailingWindRose I had one like that found it difficult to have a conversation inn the cockpit when it was running but very reliable. My last one a Volvo in a 32 foot Bavaria was well soundproofed and my friend didn't know it was running while preparing to leave the mooring. Take care Good sailing. Ian

@@ianmcnulty3279 Hi Ian, this one actually is insulated quite well. I'm a bit behind in time but have material to show you. Could also do a test one day but with the insulation it actually is also quite ok but it remains "an old diesel'....

@@SailingWindRose Yes I see, The only thing that would worry me is the lifting keel. It might be a good idea to lift it and lower it again at regular intervals to ensure it still moves freely. Good luck and safe sailing. Regards Ian.

@@ianmcnulty3279 Hi Ian, I agree. I actually did make a mistake (that I need to correct on YT), it's a center board, not a keel. There is only 60 KG of weight in the "board" itself. And I have to use it each sail because the draft in the harbor where we dock is 1,50 and totally out it's 2,10..... Good thing: it's in a pretty steady alu box... :).

A Captail that doesn't know where he's going!😳 NO THANKS. BTW, the destination might change. Hence a plan. But, to not know ?!? Perhaps , a Three Hour Tour. 🙄
