When I first saw this film I often thought he was talking about Sean Connery's Bond when he said "This never happened to the other fella." But now I'm older with repeated viewings; he realized that he picked up Tracy's shoes... I put off seeing this film for years, solely based upon what was being said. I finally saw it for the first time about a decade ago, and I was blown away. This film was the closest to Ian Fleming's ideal and was a brilliant segue after Connery. The opening scene is beautifully shot, with Diana Rigg looking so beautiful, almost ethereal, in that diaphanous dress. The fifths are brilliantly choreographed; violent, and serious, not playful, as would later happen under 'Simon T' ., The line Lazenby says to the camera is priceless; 'This never happened to the other guys, as it tells us this IS new, but there's a familiarity. I think of it as a forerunner to Craig's Bond. There are many similarities; they both are far more serious than the '70s silliness. I hope if anyone's watching this for the first time, and esp if they're older, and grew up before Daniel Craig's tenure, watch this with one eyes, and enjoy

Lazenby kept saying to Peter Hunt, ‘this never happened to Sean Connery’ while filming this movie and eventually Hunt let him say it in the movie as a way to break the ice, Lazenby was adequate enough in this film and could have become a good Bond but was badly advised and didn’t sign the multi film contract he was offered. It was a pity that one of the best Bond films was the first one without Sean Connery, that was always going to put it up against it, ironically OHMSS was supposed to be have been made earlier, it was initially supposed to be the fourth film following Goldfinger but the unexpected opportunity to make Thunderball was presented to them as legal disputes had been settled so they couldn’t say no to it and OHMSS was to be the fifth film but when they’d went to Switzerland to shoot the skiing and bobsleigh sequences they didn’t have the snow and so the decision was made to postpone it and go to Japan and make You Only Live Twice instead and Sean Connery announced during the filming that he was leaving the series as his contract had finished, he’d tired of being James Bond as he felt Bond was becoming secondary to the gadgets and spectacle and the long filming schedules meant he was restricted in being able to make other films as Bond films were made every year then and he couldn’t agree new terms with the producers, ironically OHMSS was the most character driven film of the series so far, it took Bond to where he hadn’t been before, resigning from duty and then getting married and you wonder how Connery would have done it. Connery should have stayed retired as Bond after You Only Live Twice as he looked like a different man in Diamonds are Forever, much older and heavier and the lighter hearted films didn’t suit his Bond.
@ΜακηςΛ-ε5ρ
@ΜακηςΛ-ε5ρ 4 жыл бұрын
If ''Diamonds Are Forever'' was a revenge film and not a follow-up of ''You Only Live Twice'', the fact that he is older and heavier is perfect, as Bond after Tracy's death. Also I can imagine Connery in ''Live and Let Die'' (producers wanted him), if they made the film in 1972 to celebrate ten years of Bond films. Connery would had ended as 007 from there where he started ten years before (Jamaica).

I wonder if the producers convinced Sean Connery to read the script first before quitting, would he have played in OHMSS? Connery did always praise Lazenby's performance.

The film has the right actors to the other roles (better for Blofeld is Yul Brynner), but not in Bond. Connery was Bond until the early 70s and Moore, especially from ''The Spy Who Loved Me'', was the right man at the right time (except the last film). 36.00 - 36.53 kzbin.info/www/bejne/d6CXmHl8Z9itjpI 28.01 - 29.06 kzbin.info/www/bejne/rIKYgXZtoplolZI

We were having a conversation in my editing class yesterday about speed ramping and I pointed out this was an example where it didn't work, partially because of the harsh cuts and short takes (300 is a much better example of how to use speed ramps). However, despite this scene's disorienting harsh cuts, short takes, jumping around, and speed ramps, this is hands down the best shot Bond movie (Also, the best overall in my opinion). The rest of the movie is beautiful and brings the story and locations to life perfectly. The ski chase is one of the most cinematically rewarding action sequences out there.

I've watched this PTS many times over the years and this version is particularly fantastic in terms of the sound. Every punch that Lazenby/Bond lands is like BluRay on steroids. Probably the closest representation of what it sounded like in the theater in 1969....if not better. The violence of the scene and also Lazenby's scene stealing fighting ability contribute to possibly the best pre-title sequence in the franchise. Thunderball also has an excellent PTS as well, and The Living Daylights. But this PTS in OHMSS is absolutely pure James Bond, and should only be viewed on high volume.

And to think that Lazenby received from Eon, in 1969, the equivalent of USD 100,000 for the entire making of this film ( ≈ 2023 USD $838,662.13) ... chicken's feed when compared to Connery or present-day "Bonds"... his financial advisor must bear the blame for not having Lazenby sign up for the following movies of the Bond franchise, suggesting that he should say "I make better money doing commercials."

I was surprisingly impressed by George Lazenby in this film. Considering he made the move from a "model" to the major screen, he was quite believable as 007. Too bad his agent talked him out of a long term contract as Bond --- telling him he would be "typecast" and not considered for other acting roles ... suspect it cost him millions. This iconic opening scene and the OHMSS theme were both excellent.
