Let us formally-introduce to you this widely-spoken language in the country of Philippines, the Cebuano Language.
In this video, you will learn a general overview of this language's history, the alphabet "ABAKADA" and how it's pronounced, where this language being spoken and the varieties of speakers it has.
*NOTE:
Although it's widely referred to as "Bisaya", the correct linguistic term should only be (Sinugbuanon) Cebuano as Bisaya/Visaya refers to a group of many Bisaya languages/dialects. The "Bisaya" term just got popular for the reason that it's mostly known to be spoken in the Visayas part of the country so the "Bisaya" term is now being more used to refer to the people speaking it and to the language itself. If you visit/live in the Philippines, you might rarely hear people using "Cebuano" to refer to the language.
This episode marks the start of our Cebuano Language series where we will discuss the Cebuano or Sinugbuanong Binisaya language itself, one episode at a time.
Hope you enjoy and let us know your thoughts in the comment section below! ♥

this is an amazing series !! I have spoken bisaya all my life and recently have been aching to know more about my mother tongue, i find it weird that English is hailed "superior" in the Philippines, I myself am a victim of that ideology(am speaking english rn 🙁🤧), but now I want to dip my toes into learning more about bisaya and its origins

Great video! This is already one of my favorite channels. A little note on "lingua franca" though. I noticed that you used lingua franca to mean "mother tongue". Lingua franca however is a term that means a language that is used by two speakers to communicate when they don't understand each other's mother tongue. So if Swedish is my mother tongue and Bisaya is yours but we both speak English and use that to communicate then English is our lingua franca.

Majority of Mindanao regions speak Cebuano. At present, Ilonggo, Chavacano, Indigenous languages, and Moro languages are now becoming lesser and lesser. We can say that 80 to 90 percent of Mindanao speaks Cebuano.

Yes that's because the Sugboano language of ❤SUGBO☝💯 spread throughout Central Visayas, Western Visayas, Eastern Visayas and in Northern, Southern, Western and in Eastern parts of Mindanao. Making Sugboano the most widely spoken language in the Visayas Region(s) and in Mindanao.

Thank you for making these videos❤ my Lola is from Mindanao and this is her first language, however, she didn’t teach my mom, so there’s a bit of a language barrier between us when we visit home. I want to learn so I can connect with family and feel closer to my lola who has passed away. Your videos make learning so fun and inspire me to keep learning. I want my children to grow up speaking bisaya and your channel makes me feel like this dream can be a reality!

Daghan kaayong salamat sa pagtan-aw ug sa imong komento 😊 I appreciate it a lot! I'm looking forward to the day that you'll get to converse with your lola in Cebuano with ease. You'll get there! And thank you for choosing to keep Cebuano in your family by planning to teach your children. For me, it'd very important for them to learn more about their roots esp. the language itself.

This is due to Imperalist Tangalog Manila ( Tangalization ) slowly killing other ethnic languages in the very diversed 7,000 plus archipelago. Please do relearn Sugboano and never forget your Sugboano roots. Help save our utmost beloved Sugboano language and do not let Imperialist Tangalog Manila kill it.

One of the problems I have with Bisaya is the speed at which it is spoken. Growing up in California I definitely speak slower than people from the East Coast of the US. I’m told I speak slow in England as well. What will native speakers thing when they hear me speaking slower all the time? My says it is so slow I’m mumbling.

I feel you, Anthony! I can totally relate to this cos I've been told the same 😂 I think it's normal to feel like that especially when you're learning a new language. Just keep on immersing yourself more 'til you get used to the native's speech rate. We started a new series where we interview Cebuano speakers on the street. I hope this will somehow help you with immersion. Let us know your thoughts on it! ☺

🎉New subscriber🎉 I appreciate the style in which the material is presented. It is easy for a serious adult to listen too without excessive nonsense 😂. If you want my Feedback, I do not like background music when I am learning because I find it distracting 😮, but probably most people prefer the music 😂. I live in Malitbog, Southern Leyte since November, I speak English, German, and Spanish but have spent some time with around 50 languages. Bisayan will be my 4th language, because I respect the culture of where I live. Thanks for the lessons, I liked all the videos and will give effort to make comment to promote your channel! Salamat, amping!

Thank you for learning our language, Brian. I know it's more challenging to learn than other languages due to the lack of resources but in the end, perhaps that might make it more fulfilling. Many Filipinos, esp. Cebuano speakers would be very appreciative of your effort 😊

Cebuano should be aware that the term "Bisaya" does not belong solely to them. I've had a lot of people ask me, "Marunong ka Mag-Bisaya?". The term "Visaya"/Madya-as was applied to Malay and Chinese inhabitants of #Panay (Ilonggo, Kinray-a, etc). While the native of Sugbo(Cebu) was called Pintados. Although the term Bisaya has been incorporated into Cebuano jargon for centuries, it should never be confused with the term Cebuano. As a result, identifying Bisaya solely as Cebuano is inaccurate because it excludes all other inhabitants of the region. All Cebuanos can be referred to as Bisaya, but not all Bisaya can be referred to as Cebuanos. Furthermore, Bisaya should not be considered a language and should never be confused with the Cebuano language, despite the fact that the majority of Visayans speak Cebuano. The Tribes of Panay is the true Visayan. The name "Mindanao" is a Spanish corruption of the name of the Maguindanao people, the dominant ruling ethnic group in the Sultanate of Maguindanao in southwestern Mindanao during the Spanish colonial period.

It's just similar to the concept of how people call people from the USA Americans. South and North Americans like Canadians, Mexicans, Chileans etc are also technically Americans but they're not called like that. The term "american" has been incorporated mostly to people from mainland USA. My example is not language-related but you get my point for the concept. It would be hard to change the way things are.
