Thank you for the video. I am in the process of checking for leaks. I am now doing my own work. As a single 56 year old female, I have been screwed over so many times.

😂🤣😂 I have the same problem and this was the first video I clicked on. After looking at the name of the account I figured out that you were my welding teacher! I thought that truck looked familiar.

Oh boy, so glad I found your video. For months I been trying to figure out where the hell the oil leak is coming from. Like u said on ur video, I thought maybe the rear main seal or oil pan gasket but realized it's coming from left side on top...somewhere on the side of the block but just couldn't pin point where. Thank you again.

Thanks for the video, I've been chasing this leak for over a year! I'm so excited to get my cummins leak free for the first time in years!

I was suspect of the tappet cover... when I viewed your post, I knew it was the cover leaking when you said it leaks "A LOT". 1 quart every few days. Just finished mine up.. Zero leaks. good video man

I had a leak on same side but at an inspection port. Makes me wish I had the same gasket replaced that you did at the same time.

All good information. Yes, always replace the the cam sensor, and rebuild your vacuum pump too. pump is easy to rebuild and parts are readily available. Your truck will love you, you will love yourself and your truck for it!! Lol

Thanks for the overview on this and the other things to change while there. I, too thought it was the rear main until I talked to the previous owner and he said it was replaced with the clutch. Well, I know things can happen and it could still be the RM, but it got me cleaning and looking more. I noticed lits of oil on the side of the block, oil washing down the front diff and a small stream coming from behind the starter. A bit of time on the Google machine and realized what it was. Now I wish I had fixed it when the other guy owned it so I could have been paid for it. Such is life... It sure will be nice to not have to put down a drip pan everywhere I go.

I'm pretty sure this is my problem. I see oil coming down behind ps pump about the head gasket area. Relieved after seeing your video. Ordering gaskets. I might get a cam sensor if not too expensive. Thanks for the video. 😁

My older first GEN dodge that gasket was leaking and hold the man I wasn’t even making 50 miles to a quart of oil less than that when I took my truck over to get worked on I had to put like 4 quarts of oil in to go 50 miles but anyway got it done good job though and tell the people like you said make sure that cotter key is pointing directly at 12 o’clock do not turn your pump at all hand don’t turn anything just pull the gear off like you said slap it back together and everything should be just fine for timing anyhow this is six in a row jim From Kennerdell a Pennsylvania

I replaced mine with a billet tappet cover. It has a o-ring, so it will resist an oil leak for a very long time. If one had to replace a failed VP44, I would certainly replace the tappet cover seal at the same time. Also, the Cummins vacuum pump reseal kit is only $35, so it might be wise to proactively reseal it at the same time. It is possible to remove the pump with the VP44 installed, but the process is easier while the VP44 is out of the way.

You can replace your cam sensor without removing the vp44. It's a bit of a pain but I've done it a few times

I did it yesterday. Like he said no need to remove the back three fuel lines it is easy to move them a little to get the pump out and saves the problem of getting the last one out.

I did this repair six months ago and it is a pain in the butt . I think mine is still leaking a bit . Mine let go suddenly on a trip going 85 mph.I didn't smell it I just thought the motor sounded differen,t so I pulled over lucky I always carry 1 extra gallon of oil with me that got me to the next town. I was wondering why people were giving me dirty looks as they passed me . It was like a 3/4 ton Batmobile laying down a oil slick. Everyone that passed me gave me dirty looks and had the windshield wipers running.

NOTE! While you have that all space consuming pump out and a ton of room you just might want to consider when was the last time the vacuum pump seal or power steering pump/hose’s were replaced..Im just saying, easy now not so easy later.
@holtman2598 Жыл бұрын
Could it just leak a bit or not? You all seem to say "A LOT," but my leak is minimal
@MattPritchard Жыл бұрын
Maybe you don’t have the tappet cover leak.
@holtman2598 Жыл бұрын
@Matt Pritchard dang, still on the left side, though
@MattPritchard Жыл бұрын
Oil from the tappet is toward the rear, another common leak is the vacuum pump, that leaks on the left side in the front.

Great video, Im spending $1076.00 to get mine fixed, 700 of it is labor, the rest on the gasket and new Tappit cover, oil change. I was told that the cover should be new due to the warp when it starts leaking. im not a mechanic and just hope i didnt get screwed on how much im spending

Wow, that's a bummer, this repair took about 4 hours and cost me $18 for the gasket.

Rear main seals arnt that hard. If you can take all this apart and put it back together you definitely can figure out a rear main seal. Trust me I wrench on things all the time.
