Having lived in a house with stone walls, pause a little before you rip it back to bare walls. Bare walls will be very cold in winter. Some form of stud wall that allows for a waterproof membrane and modern insulation will make the place so much more liveable.

They offer a lot of thermal mass so with something like a woodburning stove that can be kept ticking over in winter will put the warmth into the walls and you'll be nice and toasty in winter while on hot summer days it can be 30c outside but nice and cool indoors with zero aircon required. If anything you're probably better insulating the outside if at all possible. Stone walls also need to be able to breathe so coating with modern paint or stud walls can actually cause issues with damp working its way into the building from outside.

@andybrown4284 You're right on. We talked to the guy who lived here in the 60s when the walls were bare stone and the fireplaces still worked but the place was warm and dry, and he moved back in here again in 70s...by which time the central heating was installed, the walls plasterboarded, the floor concreted...THEN he says the house was damp! We'll set the auld lass right, like she would have been.

My wee cottage us natural stone, the pine lining was taken off years ago. It's like the reverse if a frudge- once you get the heat into the stone, it pushes it back out at you. No damp, although I did have a toadstool growing in the wall one year...! Someone painted part of the wall that is on the outside, and sadly, the stone dies not breathe and the paint bubbles. Whish they had left it natural. It's what attracted me to buy this place years ago.

As a 73-year-old Scot, stuck in America I have accepted that I'll never see hame again. My daddy like myself did not find the streets lined with gold. lol I think about Scotland continually and will think of your family and pray for your love to grow as the years ebb onwards. Blessings Billy

bless you . half the scots here still want to be in America or canada. When I first moved up here the crofters and factor all told me not to waste my time on this rotten country but to flee to Canada . its not a happy place overall and becoming far less so. I hope you can find some joy where you are. I have literally the best view in the entire country and our council just wrecked it with streetlights . Hope you find a lovely corner of the place you live.

This is so sad. The super rich own this country and the rest of it is bankrupt. The super rich who own these islands rarely have any feel for them. The peasants who were sent abroad are the ones who long for the land. Isnt that sad ? if you do return to visit maybe you would visit the communities we helped to buy their land back from the lairds ?? they are doing their best to conserve nature and culture. They are all really struggling now cos the super rich are taking over in force these days. The clearances are about to repeat on a huge scale i believe :(

Please try to go! My husband’s family are some that left for Canada, 200 years ago. We have yet to visit the old home, as well. It is in the plan, eventually. We still have some fine, old antiques that most likely made the journey over with the ancestors.

Escape to Rural France is a channel here on YT. He renovated an old stone farm house and now is renovating a Chateau that was literally the exterior stone and nothing else. There was a TON of point work he did on his stone walls. It's great reference especially if you need to stabilize or want to add windows, new beams etc. You certainly have your work cut out for you but what a dream to live on a Scottish Island! Also, the sheep are so cute, the smaller one has to have the bigger one in his sight at all times. It's adorable 🐑❤️🐑

10 years ago I was lucky enough to spend 2 weeks in Aberdeen. I spent all my time taking tours of the Highlands ,numerous castle including Balmoral and several distilleries. We rode the train to Edinburgh and strolled the Royal Mile and visited Edinburgh Castle. We have traveled all over the U.S. and have been to several countries but nothing compares to Scotland. I would definitely move to Scotland given the chance. I think it is the most beautiful place on earth.

Scotland is beautiful. My friend hate when people talk to her about Scotland. She really likes it and I think it draws her but she refuses to listen. People love insisting she is Scottish or Irish because her last name is McPherson. She says that she is fill blooded American mutt, lols. But when she gets drunk and people annoy her I swear she had a full on Scottish accent when she let's loose and yells them up one wall and down the other!!!! One man who was well fit and at least 6'2" made the mistake of calling her a little Scottish lassie!! He did two very wrong things. First, he assumed she was Scottish. Second and this was the biggest mistake ANYONE can make with her........ he called her 4'11" self little. She laid him out flat faster than you could blink an eye! 😂😂😂. She paid for her beer and walked out making sure to literally walk on him to get to the door!!! I do not know much about the personally of a Scottish woman. But I have heard they can be spitfires!! If that is the case then I think she is more Scottish than she believes!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Ahhhh....... she would totally k*ll me if she found out I wrote this 😅😅

Two seconds in and subrscrided! In 2015 my husband and I bought a wee derelict barn in a west of Scotland glen. Bare walls were not okay' d by Argyll & Bute planning due to blah reasons. I must say, ya hooked me from another room in the house when I heard the bagpipes and tradional music!!! Then you yanked me out of the water and into the boat with the traditional lifestyle and the stunning and ancient beauty of your new home!!! I dare say I envy you (minus the UK government, of course!) My ancestors hail from the Scottish Highlands, and their blood flows through my veins really strong!!! My family and friends have always told me I have an "old soul"! We are, after all, the sum total of all our ancestors' experiences! Scientists call it genetic memory! Even though I was born and raised in the State of Alabama in the Southern U.S., everyone I meet thinks that I'm a native Scot/Brit, as I naturally have a rather Scottish-sounding accent due to my isolation growing up and being raised on British television and my gift of mimicry, and the fact that I also like to frequently wear kilts, even back in high-school, and I'm short and stocky with long curly blond hair and a red beard!! Haha! I can also do a really strong Highland accent, among other differnt accents as well! My ancestors names include, but aren't limited to: MacDonald, Stewart, Douglas, Wilson, Forsyth, Akins, Balfour, Newton, Bolton, Akins, Taylor, etc. I enjoy doing historical reenactments of the 1600s, 1700s, 1800s, and I love collecting antique weapons and doing experimental archeology! I pleat my own kilts, I made 2 of my own leather sporans and leather belt, and a pair of leather brogues/moccasins, and I found some hawk feathers in the woods that I put in my bonnet! As a student of history, I recall that the Hebrides used to belong to the once big and powerful MacDonald Kingdom! Would be really neat to have a nice traditional Highland Galley boat where you're at! I've always been enamored with the traditional Highland clan lifestyle and warfare ever since I was little when I saw some documentaries and travel shows on public television, and when I watched/read Kidnapped by R.L. Stevenson, and watched Rob Roy and Braveheart! If I were in your shoes, I swear I'd go all out traditional Scots Highlander, even going barefooted and sleeping outside in my hill-skin(Great Kilt) and speaking in Scots-Gaelic! Godspeed on your endeavors!

We love this commentary, and thank you for it. Where do your ancestors hail from? We're amazed by how many of our kin from across the pond are seeing this, and very happy of course! We're also very invested in studying the old ways and history of our folk, fascinating where we all come from.

@TheScottishIsle Well, to my understanding, some of them come from the general vicinity of the Caithness area/North/Noreast Highlands, and some come from the Hebrides and Western Highlands, and basically just scattered all throughout the Highlands, Lowlands, and Scotland in general! Some of my family trees' documents are incomplete, and don't refer to a specific place in Scotland, so I've just had to do some "forensic" research regarding names and areas and deduce what I can from what I've got, haha! But that's a rabbit hole that's enveloped me for quite some time! I'd really love to know more about my ancestors; it's just that sometimes a lot is unfortunately lost to the sands of time! It's very odd that I've just always had this inate and very uncanny, strong feeling towards the Scottish Highlands and the 1600s - 1700s, and I confess that it's become an obsession of mine! I'm very glad that I came across you and am able to have this conversation with you, it really makes my day!!

@TheScottishIsle Also, as an addendum to my first response, several of my European ancestors actually arrived on the North American continent sometime prior to 1640, in the Virginia Colony just south of the Jamestown settlement! Of course, my Native American ancestors were here prior to that! As I'm also part Muskogee/Creek, Chickasaw, and Cherokee--due to my European ancestors' intermarriage with the local Southeastern "Indian" tribes. Native American culture and my blood tie to it is another one of my obsessions as well! Interestingly enough, when the Scots Highlanders came over to North America in the 1600s/1700s as fur trappers and traders deep into the Eastern frontier, they got along very well with the local Native Americans, as the Brits/Europeans considered them both to be barbaric savages! I also found a very interesting tidbit in my research that talks about how the Natives' general term for shoe is "moccasin", and how eerily similar it is to the Scots-Gaelic words "mo" and "casin" meaning "my foot" when put together!

@@TheScottishIsleAs an addendum to the addendum, haha, including my Scottish lineage, I'm also part Irish, English, Native American, German, Italian, and a pinch of French, Spanish, and Welsh as well! Another thing I found, was that some of my Scots ancestors were sent to the "Ulster Plantation" in Ireland in the late 1600s, I believe, as an attempt by the English/British Crown to help keep the Irish "in check"/subdued!

This is going to be amazing! You guys are close to the (looks wild) mainland, yet completely isolated. The place has so much potential too! With a big project like that, I can only recommend to go slow when dismantling and renovating and go section by section, as it can become overwhelming very quickly if the whole place is a building site.. I can only suggest to try all the things you want to do in the smallest room, and build your expertise on it. Maybe you already have plenty (?) so maybe it's not an issue. But if not, then make it your "mistake room" :) as the house will surely reveal some of its quirkiness to you as you go along. As well as learning how much time each steps takes, and how do the changes feel like for tge rest of the house. I can really understand the appeal of the exposed stones, (or exposed beams etc..),cthat's also what I favor, but will you loose some of the insulation provided by removing the fake walls? Or is this not really an issue? Maybe the walls helped to keep away dampness or condensation for example (?). Thh, it's not a climate i'm familiar with, yet after having lived in a badly insulated and damp house before it's something I always have concerned about hence why i'm mentioning it..! Can't wait to follow you guyss along as you build your dream home though. It is going to be an epic transformation!! Bree is such a cutie!!

Thank you so much for your advice! I think our plans will be to slowly expose the walls, room by room, to re-mortar them in traditional lime to make them sanitary and safe, then to board them out again...kind of as they were but more in-keeping with tradition rather than 1960s chip board! Crofts were usually wood panelled tongue and groove on the walls. The floors are very damp so we will need to fix them properly before anything aesthetic! The house won't last unless we make the old girl watertight! Brie is such a sweetie. More about the sheep in the next instalment!

@@TheScottishIsle Maybe you could look into hemp and lime instead of board? It's an ecofriendly alternative to chip board. Otherwise there is a product called Fermacell which is made partly from celllulose. It is much stronger and more durable than chipboard. I love your wee stove by the way, can't wait to see it restored.

@janel4582 I think we'll probably leave the walls exposed as they traditionally would have been. They all need repointing and finishing first and we'll see what they're like!
