Can confirm. sona mute li kama :) What's crazy is how effortless this feels. I suppose that our brain is doing a ton of work in the background, connecting dots and identifying patterns, but to us, it doesn't feel like it's a lot of effort and that's very rewarding and motivating. Suddenly, you catch yourself writing small sentences in toki pona. A few days later, you catch yourself interjecting, my first time was when I saw a gecko near my house: "a, akesi lili!". Time passes and you are able to journal in TP a bit. It's amazing.

But now I don't need to tell you that whatever mechanism allowed you to learn a language effortlessly as a child is still there. Because you've experienced it for yourself.

@@jantelakoman Indeed! I am an ALG convert 😁. Many people I know complain about the difficulty of picking up new languages. Even I've had a few gos at French with little success. And I consider myself a good student! taso, the French academy didn't help and made me feel frustrated because of the ton of words I had to memorize with little incentive or foundation to use them. Same goes for Duolingo, nimi sin mute pi toki Kanse li kama, li tawa lon tenpo lili. I've tried looking for something similar to opetp for Portuguese but sadly nothing has come up. What you have said in your appendix videos is very true and it's sad that so many learning resources are trying to get us to stuff nice perfumes in our nostrils when really, all we need to do is wash our hands 🤔

Just finished the first episode. My son liked it he said. At first I was feeling a bit lost, but it began to click later... I think I was focusing on the words to much at first, which led to boredom and then mind-wandering. I realized I was doing that and then started focusing on the story, and it got better. Here is what I understood in a summarized format (the numbering is arbitrary): 1) Girl named "Little" tries to make fruit to eat out of playdough. 2) Playdough fruit tastes bad. 3) Mom tells her you cannot eat playdough. 4) Mom says you can buy fruit at the store, but girl doesn't have money. 5) Mom tells girl how to plant a fruit tree. 6) Girl tries, but is upset when tree does not immediately appear. 7) Mom tells her to be patient, because it takes time. 8) Girl gives it time, but is impatient when she sees the tree starts out small. 9) Mom tells her it takes more time. 10) It grows big and bears fruit, girl eats and is happy. 11) Then mom makes a metaphor about processes that require effort and time first and only give results later via learning to play music and do math. 12) Girl thinks that is a good idea. Still, I think if you can follow the general point of the story, like you describe, that's actually all that's necessary and it gets better from here. Thanks for the synopsis. At first it took a lot of effort to stop myself from registering vocabulary, so much effort that I had to stop for a nap. After the nap I could focus on the story.

Although I'm already familiar with the vocabulary, I'll be taking the challenge to improve my fluency. Here's a summary of what I could understand from this first story: • A girl wonders how to make real fruit on her own and asks her mom for help. • Her mom explains the process to grow a fruit and the girl tries it, but feels let down because the process takes time. • Her mom explains that she needs to be constant and in the end the girl understands this and gets to harvest the fruit that she planted.

Watching the whole video made me able to say "Toki! Mi pona. Mi moku kili" without looking at it easily. like it isnt much of a accomplishment but like wtf this is passive income in languages. keep up the good work. Edit: I watched until sixth episode and i think i improved a lot. i still have a lot of things i dont understand in each episode but rewatching this, i cant believe i didnt understand such an easy video. in my first watch, everything sounded impossible but now i could understand a lot of the context if i just read the transcript without any comprehensibility. In order to note my level, i will once again write hardest sentence i could. it probably is wrong. "Toki! Mi pilin pona. Mi ken sitelen e toki pona, mi ken toki! Honestly I don't know. I think obviously per minute you get more out of it if you're able to pay attention. But, unless this would be boring, I think if you watch the same video more than once then each time you'll get more from it. It doesn't need to be on the same day, you can watch other videos before you come back. Maybe choose which ones to rewatch based on what you enjoyed. Ultimately I think it could compensate

my experience (maybe not yours!) is that audio-only doesn't give my "Inner Horse" 🐴 (language-learning mind) quite enough comprehensible input to make much progress -- i am doing a 4th pass through the lessons now, however, and the audio seems to be much more understandable than it was during the first three!

I don't know this language, this is what I got: Someone named lili made some clay fruit that she couldn't eat. But she also made an apple she could eat. She told her mom and her mom told her to sell it at the store. Her mom told her how to grow a fruit. She watered it, went to sleep and the next day there was no fruit so she was upset. Her mom told her it takes sun and time. So she continued to water the plant and wait, but the plant still didn't grow. Her mom told her to wait longer. It did eventually grow and lili was happy. Then her mom told her the seed is an allegory about how things grow and take time like learning a skill.

What a lovely video series. I think I understood most of the story and it's a wonderful lesson for the first video in the series. One thing I'm not sure about is if I'm focusing on the meaning and not the words like you mentioned in the "00 Start Here" video. Based on the story I've figured out toki is talk, moku is eat, ike is bad, and pona is good. I'm sure there are more meanings to those words, but those are the current words I'm associating with them. Is the problem that I'm associating them with English words, and not actually to the idea the word represents? It's super hard to force my mind to not do that because I feel like if I absolutely tune out without thinking I won't actually pay attention to the story. For example when you wrote words down, I wasn't sure if I should focus on reading them or not. I just quickly glanced at them. Also I guess it's not recommended to binge the series or read any of the other comments from people, right? I'm interested to learn more but will wait till tomorrow to watch the next. :)

Hi, thanks for your feedback! You're right that it's a difficult one. I hope I can help this approach to make sense to you: Form-meaning connections grow with time, like a picture gradually coming in to focus. Think of the word "talk" in English (assuming it's your native language). You heard it enough times when you could work out what was going on, so that you built up a nuanced perception of the range of situations where "talk" is used. When you say "aha, toki means talk!" you're making a form-form connection. It's like deciding that the picture you're looking at is the same as this other picture you know, before it's had time to come into focus. I know it's hard to not do. I think it helps to have it clear in mind that what you're doing is recognizing that toki is used in many places where you might say talk in English. You can see this as a kind of working theory, and keep an open mind for usages of toki you encounter in the future to surprise you. But if you see it as an equivalence, and peg toki to talk in your mind, I think this is what can be damaging.

After I made my comment, I was wondering how I'd define "talk" to someone that has no knowledge of any language, e.g. a baby. But you can't really do that, you gotta use pictures and stories like you're doing here. So maybe it's not age that's the problem to learning a second language, but already knowing a language and constantly comparing it to our native one. My takeaway from your reply is that consciously recognizing form-form connections you've made isn't necessarily a bad thing, as long as they're temporary and open to change. I'm definitely expecting many Toki Pona words to be reused in other contexts, especially when the language is only 120 words! I'm actually still in disbelief at that, but I don't want to do any research outside of these videos. Looking forward to see if by the end I'd have made any form-meaning connections. Thanks again.

In your introduction you say; "nimi mi li jan Telakoman", but I've heard there's a bit of contention with this kind of naming. You're not "called the person Telakoman", you're "called Telakoman". In toki pona that would be; "nimi mi li Telakoman". Do you find this distinction insignificant, or do you think there might be something to this?

@Daan I didn't have time to do that myself but others have already helped out with that. Turn on "English (Canada)". Unfortunately KZbin doesn't list Toki Pona as a subtitle language. The reason for "Canada" is that Sonja Lang, the creator of Toki Pona, is Canadian, so it's become a bit of an inside joke.

I realize my implementation is not the best, and starting out with this story was a bit ambitious. The next story is a little bit more familiar, I hope you still have enough patience to give that a chance. Some others have also found it hard going to begin with but it's become easier as they've continued. The interviews I've done with people who watched them all seem to bear that out. The bottom line is: Don't give up on this approach just yet. If you can't follow along with what's happening in the story that's on me, the point is that if you could, it would work. For an excellent example of this approach in action I would suggest Dreaming Spanish
