This is the best acrylic pour I’ve ever done!
I took on an acrylic pour painting challenge recently that really pushed me to uncomfortable limits. This 48” x 36” canvas was 4x bigger than my biggest pour prior to this video. I used Artist’s Loft premixed acrylic paint, and really needed to take my time with this swipe. Not having made anything this big before I wasn’t sure how the paint would react on the canvas.
I wound up going with a light amount of paint on my first passes and added more acrylic paint to fill the colors that needed more attention. Once I got my first swipe out of the way, I was excited to see what was happening- The colors I wanted are the ones I got, and some really nice cell reactions happened as well!
I tilted quite a bit more than I had hoped for on this pour, but in the end the result is by far the best I have ever had. This pour was definitely out of my normal comfort zone, but I am so happy that it turned out like it has.
If you have any tips/suggestions on acrylic pour painting on big canvas’ I’d love to hear your feedback below.

I LOVE THIS !! I have been pouring for a few years & also want to move up to working on much larger canvases & this video just happened to pop up in my feed today & it was the canvas size & not the Technique that actually got my attention. I see this is an older video but I still wanted to leave a comment & say that you did AMAZING with this !! I am SOOO glad that you ended up tilting more than you actually wanted or planned on !! As a regular swipe it was still nice but the tilting just took it to a whole new level, & it really let that Violet stretch out & shine which along with the Blue really made this piece pop !!
@tonysfluidart

Thank you so much for that comment, I really appreciate that. Yeah it was back in March of last year, when my brother commissioned me to make a big piece for his house. It was way out of my comfort zone, and really pushed me but I’m glad I did it. I was very happy with how things turned out after all, although it did scare the hell out of me when I first began to pour the paint lol. Thanks again for watching, I really appreciate it! 🙂

I just rewatched that pour which I haven't done in a long time. Wow, looking back on it now I'm even more happy it turned out like it did. And yes, that stretch really did let that violet pop through the rest! Thanks again!

@@tonysfluidart Ha !! I actually watched it twice myself lol. I have a huge supply of canvases in all different sizes but just haven't been bold enough to even look at the extra large ones. Lol. So I'm trying to get all the inspiration I can & muster up as much "guts" as I can to just go for it !! I really want to start doing some abstract with large brushes & catalyst wedges & a few other ideas so I've just been practicing some ideas on my not so large canvases trying to prepare myself for the transition to LARGE. I got so very bored with the usual typical pouring techniques & ended up taking about a year break but now I'm ready to get back in the game. I never really got into doing swipes just as a regular swipe but I'm wanting to incorporate the swipe into different design ideas ( hope that makes sense, it's hard to explain) & I've never seen such a huge swipe like yours & I did really like it & when you first started tilting I was like "Whoa" what's he doing & then when you kept tilting more & more I figured you must have simply changed your mind about doing a swipe & then seeing the outcome I was truly amazed with how the colors mixed perfectly without over mixing & as I mentioned before, that Violet stretch just sealed the deal !! I sat here thinking, that is something that could never be recreated & even come close to the end results, even though no 2 pours ever turn out the same, you can come pretty close, but I would have to say no way with this beauty you created !! Sure would be fun to try but yes, definitely scary especially with that size canvas but you should definitely give it a whirl !! I hope your Brother appreciated & understood just how amazing this creation is !! 😊😊

Thanks so much for being here, Susan! I appreciate you watching. 😊 I used premixed artist loft which is quite thin on this pour, but nothing added additionally. It dried quite glossy so no varnish on this one, but for my others I use Liquitex gloss varnish. It’s been awhile since I’ve made another big one, but I’ll probably go with the Liquitex again!

I like Golden archival spray varnish, but it is expensive. I tried Gamvar, but after three months, the painting still remaines sticky. I will call the company next week to find out the cause and the remedy. I love resin, but it is impossible for me to make perfect since I paint on canvas. It is all a work in progress! I just bought a bunch of Artist Loft ready-mix paint to try as it is on sale through this weekend. I do love cells and lacing. Not sure if I will get kthem with this paint. What is your experience with this method?

@@susanweidman3525 I would love to try a spray varnish for something different. My frustration with any varnish is that it may leave streaks. Also, the same deal with resin is tough to get perfect. With this painting, it was with the premixed paint you probably picked up and the only thing I would say about this is that it doesn’t make cells as well. also compared to how I mix my paint the premixed is very very thin, but has great pigment. It also blended really well with this swipe on a big canvas.

@@tonysfluidart A good spray varnish works without any brush marks. I stand it up vertically and spray from side to side. According to directions for time, I turn it the other way and spray again. Sometimes I do 4 thin coats just because I’m crazy not necessary. There are no bubbles to deal with and no streaks. Grumbacher has a good spray if you are not concerned with uv rays, and it is much cheaper. Give it a try.

Hi Susan! I don't normally add them in my description, but I certainly can. This pour was an easy one, it was all pre-mixed Artist's Loft acrylic with pouring medium already added.
