for taking videos the limiting resolution of the camera is given by the rate and time of transmitting pictures to memory and not by lenses or objects

One very important aspect of choosing a microscope camera is th CMOS SENSOR SIZE... Not just the megapixel count... 1/3.2" CMOS sensor = 7.9 mm (diagonal) FIELD OF VIEW (bit annoying discrepency between eye field and camera image field of view) 1/2.3" CMOS sensor = 11.0 mm (diagonal) FIELD OF VIEW (bit annoying discrepency between eye field and camera image field of view) 1/2" CMOS sensor = 12.7 mm (diagonal) FIELD OF VIEW 1/1.8 CMOS sensor = 14.1 mm (diagonal) FIELD OF VIEW 2/3" CMOS sensor = 16.9 mm (diagonal) FIELD OF VIEW (IDEAL for most microscope) 1" CMOS sensor = 25.4 mm (diagonal) FIELD OF VIEW (too big for most microscope)

EDIT: I answer myself.. If you don't have camera, and you want amazing results (video/images) Just get modified GoPro camera from back-bone website. Example.. Gopro8 becomes compatible with M12, CS-Mount & C-Mount And exactly C-mount adapter allows to connect a camera to the trinocular port of the microscope.

Apart from the compensating camera eyepiece and it corrections, would you have the same imagequality if the camera was mounted on one of the eyepieces?

The light is slit up between phototube and eyepieces, so there should be the same quality. I have a stereo microscope that uses mirrors to redirect the light to the phototube and I think that the quality though the phototube is actually a bit worse than though the eyepieces. So it depends mostly on the optics used.

I am coming to like your vids and am becoming fascinated with the "undiscovered country" in my backyard garden. Can you suggest a scope that can resolve the kind of structures that I encounter, like mildew/mold and other water borne pathogens? I grow variety of veggies and my curcubits face threats like Phytophtora Capsici and Psuedoperonaspora Cubensis. By the way I LOVED your vids on Diatoms and now know why Diotomaceous earth kills cut-worms! Diotom shells are ciliicite and soft skinned insects take critical damage when they crawl thru it. Super! The issue with the USB 3.0 dropping to 2.0 is the bandwidth of the USB bus. I'd similar issue while setting up my VR sensor, getting 4x USB 3.0 to work at the same time is a huge hassle if you have a VR ready motherboard. TLDR; get a motherboard or PC with proper USB 3.0, or one that says VR ready.

Do you have any advice for working with older microscope cameras? We have several microscope cameras (Sony, Panasonic) in my department, but they all have the old BNC video output cables. Actually mirrorless cam works great for photomicrography. I just restored my American Optical AO One Sixty vintage microscope with the Sony A6000 attached (homemade mount). It works! Image way much better than my old Nikon D90 DSLR. Most of all, the mirrorless body is small and very light so it occupies less stress on the eyepiece barrel.

Hi Oliver, thanks for your super informative videos! I just got a couple new set ups (trinocular Amscope T409b-dk, and trinocular stereoscope) to use with my mirrorless dslr and dedicated hayear scope cam. While my videos come out amazing, my still images are complete crap LOL. Do you need to really turn up the illumination in order to get acceptable shutter speeds for still images? I had to crank my iso to 1600 or 3200 to get just 1/30 of a second, which as you know isn't fast enough to negate motion blur, and the noise at those ISOs is frustrating. If you have to increase the light intensity, do you still use the eye pieces to follow your subjects or do you do everything on the screen of the camera? I have my cameras connected to a large 1080p television but its difficult to follow the subjects with any magnification over 10x, because my camera is an APS-C the field of view is fairly small. Thank you for any help you can lend me! Its difficult starting out ;o)

Yes, and this is indeed done most of the time. In the case of the USB 3 camera, they use a different strategy by moving the sensor forwards to the focal point of the objective. This improves the situation a bit (compared to having the sensor further back) but still results in a relatively small fov.

Well, much depends on other factors as well, besides sensor size. But larger sensors have the advantage that one is able to simply see a larger area (larger field of view). Larger sensors also have a better signal to noise ratio. But with appropriate reduction lenses one can also get a better field of view with small sensors. If you cram a lot of pixels into a small sensor, then you might not fully benefit from the resolution, as you might get more "empty resolution", where the sensor has more pixels than the resolution that the microscope is able to supply.

How good is the quality of 350T ? is this clear enough for seeing Bacillus subtilis, Lactobacillus spp, Trichoderma spp, Bacillus spp and others ? meanwhile china microscope not good enough

Of course you can see them (if you know what to look for or if you put a pure culture under the microscope). But this is not a quality question. To see bacteria better, you need phase contrast microscopy.

wo rechne ich falsch...Nehmen wir an ich mikroskopiere mit NA 1 ca 60fach. Dann liegt meine Aufloesung etwa bei 1 Mikrometer. Das reele Zwischenbild hat die Groesse von etwa 1 Quadratzentimeter. Dann benoetige ich bei 1my Aufloesung schon 10 hoch acht Pixel. Das bedeutet eine Kamera mit 100 Megapixel. Noch nicht beruecksichtigt dass der Sensor der Kamera quadratisch ist und das mikroskopische Bild rund

Can you tell me the model of the microscope so that I can have a look at it? Normally high-end microscopes like Nikon etc do not have built-in camera systems (unless for specific uses), becasue they keep microscopes modular and for this reason they do not build in cameras normally.

Be careful with built in cameras... first if the camera experiences a problem you cannot simply send in for repair or replacement - at a minimum the entire binocular tube must go meaning your microscope is down...second they don’t allow for future camera upgrades or replacement like a phototube/camera would...a good microscope will last you decades but camera do not - even if you just consider operating system compatibility...in 15 years your microscope will hopefully be functioning perfectly fine but will the camera be compatible with current version of windows?...will much more powerful and inexpensive cameras be available that you might want to upgrade to? What if the camera fails - no one repairs cameras so you’re stuck...manufacturers move on from these camera models very quickly...so for these reasons I would generally not recommend built in cameras - even if at the time they are a slightly cheaper option

My Chinese Omax/Novel binocular scope should arrive in a few weeks. I am thinking of getting a set of PLAN achromatic objectives (4x/10x/40x/100x) for about USD103. Is this a smart move, or should I not expect much improvement with Chinese PLAN objectives over the regular Chinese achromatic objectives that come with the microscope? I expect that these PLAN objectives are very similar, if not identical, to the Amscope PLAN objectives that get good reviews on Amazon.

I would buy a low cost microscope camera that you can connect directly to the microscope without separate adapter. The microscope eyepiece cameras can be put into the microscope directly on the tube (or an eyepiece). If you want an original OM Phototube and NFK photo ocular from Olympus, then this can be expensive (if you even find one on ebay) and then you need an SLR camera as well.

I use an astrophotography camera (asi1600mm-cool) camera and have to put the camera without any adapter on my Amscope T490B microscope. the heavy and clumbsy DLSR cameras are obviously not the best solution for microscopie except that you can use them for normal fotos. Shurly microfotografie today makes no sense because we can make excelent moovies, but not only with a DLSR

Have you looked into 3D printers? It should be easy to make great adapters with a 3D printer. Or even 3D print a full microscope.

I thought about it, but I am not sure if the 3D printers have the resolution to make a sufficiently fine threading for screws etc. Or maybe the plastic is soft enough and a threading is not required. 3D printing a full microscope might only be meaningful if the microscope is 3D printed from metal (laser heat to melt metal?). Plastic might be too light to be stable, unless one adds weight. And also here there is the question of tolerance and mechanics. The Legoscope does use 3D printed parts: legoscope.squarespace.com/ This one is similar to the one I made (which does not use 3d printed parts).

what a senseless calculation and discussion.......the human eye has a resolution of max 4.1 Megapixel. The limiting factor ist the resolution of the presentating media. Use a Laptop ur Desktop with heigh resolution: 1920 x 1080 and that is about 2 Megapixels,. So an camera or 3 mega is sufficcent

@@lotharmayring6063 I am also a scientist and use photography above 50 years with telescope and microscope. The main task was to get the image of maximum resolution and detailed. A 35mm film frame (24×36mm) has 12 Mpx. From which reliable sources on good authority have you got that yours percent?

@@lotharmayring6063 resolution of optical devices is measured in line per mm. Pixel for matrix or film. Resolution of microscope depends on monochrome short wave illumination (ultraviolet and quartz optics). So, yours information about microscope objectives is inaccutate, regrettably.
