In 2017, as same-sex marriage made headlines, Henry Li and his late husband, Edgar Ng, celebrated their union with a UK wedding and a Hong Kong church ceremony. However, their joy turned to hardship when compelled to vacate their public housing. Edgar Ng took legal action to protect their home but tragically succumbed to depression in December 2020. Now, Henry Li carries the torch, navigating a labyrinth of legal battles to honor his late husband's memory.
In a significant development, the Court of Appeal delivered a resolute blow to the Housing Authority and the Department of Justice in October 2023. Their appeals in both the "public housing case" and the "inheritance case" were unequivocally dismissed, solidifying Edgar Ng's hard-won triumph. Henry Li, carrying the weight of discrimination experienced through exclusion from a functioning societal system, brought the court decision to Edgar Ng's grave, affirming, "The court has finally recognized the profound suffering you endured." Despite the government's appeal to the Court of Final Appeal, the unfinished legal battle of his deceased husband lingers, compelling Henry Li to persist in the pursuit of justice.
