Huge waves from the nor'easter created extensive beach erosion in Sandwhich, Ma. Three homes were destroyed or condemned and one completely collapsed into the ocean. Shots from drone from multiple angles of home destroyed, damaged homes, damaged docks and beach erosion.

I am a local. Many of the houses were built in the 1930's and 40's. They had very small footprints and were camps at best, very "rustic". Also these buildings were 200 feet from the water's edge. In the past 15 to 20 years the little houses were torn down and rebuilt into big houses and the ocean moved closer and closer. Many places are still owned by the same families that built 80 years ago. Sadly their time has come to go. The ocean always wins.

Yeah, that happened to my sweet coastal town in Mississippi. Our bayous and beaches housed either working families or folks from New Orleans who had a bitty zJim Walters home over here for weekends. Nothin' fancy, beach road was funky bars or bait and tackle or snoballs. Katrina flattened our entire town. Developers bought up lots of lots. Building code was in place, no more little old camps on poles. Our new home was $250,000. Our original was $11,500, lol. Anyway, the insurance and property taxes kept going up and it forced s to sell. But the newcomers aren't from water culture, they may be rich but they are clueless. And when another Cat 4 or 5 comes, they will learn why there are no trees on the beach homes or bayous. Or anything older than 19 years. We lived there 30 yrs and watched the beach and the sand dept batltle. Our streets started flooding in high tides, 5 storms in 15 months time to go to higher ground. We live at 42 feet Above Sea Level, lol

When I was a kid, 65 years ago, old time New Englanders did not build on the beach. The few who did were behind massive sea walls. But I can remember seeing even those walls being tossed across the beaches like marbles after the winter storms. Ten foot high, eight foot wide, reinforced concrete. In chunks.

People with no experience will no doubt underestimate water. I watched so many newcomers do foolish things when hurricanes were coming (I live on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi-survived Katrina, barely). Water and surge is responsible for vast majority of deaths. 6 inches will knock a man down and carry him off. A foot will float your car. Surge and waves battering destroyed beach houses 25 ft up, broke them up and hurled them at the 2nd row....it was terrifying for the survivors, but most who fail to evac were dead....they look at wind but the surge will kill ya.

You never know though. If they can rebuild further back, on stilts, they'll buy a few more decades. Californians, who live on mountain tops that slide down with heavy rains, manage to continue selling real estate that's unstable. Why? I don't know. Prestige? Views? ROI? Something keeps bring people back. Maybe some (newbies) just don't know any better.

I went up one of these stairs by accident, the man of the house took great pride in being rude to me in front his family who all had satisfied smirks when he rudely said, “Where do you think you are going?”. That’s typical New England massholeism. I guess they had a stair going to the public beach which looked identical to a public stair next to it. On cape cod many beaches are privately owned by hotels and streets of houses, but they allow people to walk through though. But yes, money talks..

Because the narrow strip of land has been above mean high tide for 100 years, it is not safe from increasing sea levels, due to polar ice melts and storm surges from higher winds than have historically been recorded. Insurers are taking a long, hard look at ocean frontage losses and will have to make the necessary adjustments in premiums and in coverage possibility.

and lumber prices are so high now. Erosion is killing any beach life left. And not just on the oceans either. Same on the great lakes. Homeowners getting put out one season at a time. Thinking they're trying to crowd everyone into the cities.

26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

They have no barrier in place for erosion. Some of the properties have barriers in place to help with the sand going out with the undertow. The ocean will eventually knock all of them down though. Every hurricane , every storm takes a little more beach front.
