What a doubleheader for CBS- That mega-monster UNLV team against a great Arkansas team, followed by LSU with SHAQ against Laettner/Hurley/Hill. Back when college basketball was still college baskeball. When CBS weekend games FELT like must-see big-time stuff.

This was CBS' first year post-NBA (as well as the first round of the NCAA Tournament), so they loaded up, even had Duke/Carolina--which has almost exclusively been ABC/ESPN since.

I lived in the piece of shit city, Fresno that considered UNLV their arch-rivals, even though Vegas beat the hell out of Fresno all the time. I loved UNLV and was always a huge fan. What a bunch of lame shit the Arkansas fans displayed during the starting lineups. Probably the most stupid garbage I'd ever seen. You don't have to cheer the opponents but "Who's he"? What a load of classless shit.

But what was strange about this UNLV team is that we never saw this pace again. I guess some teams intentionally tried to slow Vegas down, but UNLV never responded to it. I think Duke would've won more like 20 times out of 100 since UNLV was thin inside. They missed the physical presence of David Butler and Moses Scurry. The 1990 team was better but they didn't put it together until the latter part of the season due to suspensions.

In the 1990 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament - UNLV's 103-73 win over Duke marked the first, (and to date, only), time in the history of the tournament that at least 100 points were scored in the championship game. UNLV’s 571 points over six games set the record for most points scored by a single team in any one year of the tournament. UNLV is the only team in tournament history to average more than 95 points per game. In six tournament games, they won three by exactly 30 points, while scoring more than 100 points in each 30-point victory. UNLV’s 30-point margin of victory in the championship game is also a tournament record. To date, UNLV remains the last team from a non-power conference (AAC, ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12, and SEC) to win the national championship; and the only one since 1977. The championship game was UNLV’s eleventh-consecutive win. They would eventually run the win streak to an astounding 45 games. That is the fourth-longest win streak in NCAA Division 1 basketball history, and the longest win streak since the longest one ever (by UCLA), ended in 1974. And AFTER their championship season, their cumulative record the NEXT two seasons was 61-3. That’s the third-highest winning percentage for any Division 1 college basketball team over two consecutive seasons, since the start of the 1973 season. Jerry Tarkanian’s last six years at UNLV. How’s this for a six-year-run!? In 1986-87 UNLV lost ONE game (by one point) in the regular season, went to The Final Four, lost to the eventual national champion in an extremely close game, and finished the season 37-2. The next two seasons they “only” went 28-6 and 29-8, but made it to the second-round and the Elite Eight respectively in the championship tournament. The next year, 1989-90, they were national champions (and set SEVEN records in the tournament; all of which still stand….to this day). The next year, (the third consecutive year they were a number-1 seed in March Madness), the ONLY game they lost….was the national semi-final, by two points to the eventual champion, and they went 34-1. The following year, they went 26-2. Pretty damn good run for six straight years !

Larry Johnson taunted Nolan Richardson during this game telling him to ‘get some men.’ Nolan did, getting Big Nasty Corlis Williamson, Corey Beck, Clint McDaniels, Darnell Robinson, Dwight Stewart and won a national championship in 1994 and another championship game in 1995.

This UNLV club had a margin of victory at 26.7 ppg. Let that sink into your brain. This team, on average, beat people by almost 30 points...EVERY game. Duke should thank whatever god they worship, for having given this team it's only loss in this season.

I was student this game. 2nd row mid court. I was in awe when LV dancers walked out on court. Larry J. was a bad dude. Mayberry made it a game 2nd half. Nolan is still the man and he never cheated.

This team here is still my favorite even more so than Corliss Williamson and the 94-95 Razorback teams (94 NCAA Champs, 95 Runner-up to UCLA). I sorely miss those baseball passes that Big O would throw down the court like at the 38:30 mark for those fast break points. He would rebound and automatically look down-court for the fast break. The 94 was a better TEAM, but these guys were great individual talents and also an awesome team as well. Just not as deep on the bench as the 94-95 team. Unfortunately they only got as far as the Final Four and never won an NCAA Championship.

Well, I was only about 1-2 years old...haha, but I've heard stories from my uncle, father and brother about these UNLV teams and how great they were. Ever since I've watched the 1991 Final Four film on ESPN in '97, I've always wanted to see games from them. They would DESTROY teams if that team was playing in today's College ball, even today's NBA ball.

They were great but i could give you problably about 5 teams since that wouldve beaten them. The 91 team was more dominant but the 90 team was deeper which is what lead to them getting beat by Duke in 91. They basically went 6 maybe 7 deep but thats about it.

I had a picture (from Sports Illustrated I think) of Augmon's dunk at 49:00 in my school locker. It was taken from under the opposite basket. His arm pit was at rim level, and his finger tips were well over the box on the glass. It's hard to appreciate how high he got in normal speed, but he was way over the rim.

I would like to see some of the games between Bama and Arkansas from that time period. Grueling games with Wimp Sanderson and Nolan Richardson dueling from the coach's boxes. Arkansas with the players you see here. Alabama with "Big Shot Bob" Robert Horry, Latrell Spreewell, David Benoit, Marcus Webb, Melvin Cheatum, James "Hollywood" Robinson, Jason Caffey, Eric Washington... all future pros.
