To me personally, this tune is the epitome of SID greatness. I don't understand how the tune could even exist in the first place, the dang thing only has three voices to play with! And with those paltry three, it manages to produce a main melody, a backing melody, a bassline AND percussive instruments too! HOW!!! :D It's so well composed. I love it, thanks forever, Ben! :)
@vksasdgaming94722 ай бұрын
@@lennyvalentin6485 I think it is some kind of audio illusion in which different tracks (voices) jump between "instruments" while playing at the same time. Just like chamber orchestra that would switch seamlessly between instruments during performance. There is more than three instruments played, but only three at the same time. It truly is brilliant composition as limits show the skill. Funnily enough designer of SID was initially unhappy about it's performance, but boss said "that thing is five times as good as what competitors have and ten times as good as it needs to be" and that is high praise indeed.

You felt a real sense of loneliness and solitude when that initial bassline thumps in. Especially coming off of the back of that tranquil piece of loader music which played prior to this level. And then it all kicks in and you realise that back then, the SID sorcerers truly were audio geniuses.

I remember back in school, our teacher in music-class complained about all of these horrible squeaking and squealing sounds kids are confronted with when they are playing video games and Game Boy. He said that kids would lose touch with real music and with art in general. In the next lesson, I brought the Robocop-theme and Last Ninja-theme to school, which I recorded on tape from my C64. I asked him to listen to this track I brought because I wanted to prove that even video games have "real music". He really was impressed and said it would content real poetry. Then we started a discussion about the evolvement of music with the whole class and he stated that he might be wrong. He always was open to new things and was ready to learn a lesson himself.

Interesting how the melody later in the song is played in a drum like pattern to not only compliment the existing drums but too also make up for the lack of channels that the C64 had available for audio. The end result is something that sounds very full especially for the C64.

Used to love figuring these tunes out on my guitar back in the late 80's, and still to this day when I play live these melodies sneak into my playing without me even noticing it. When people say "Jeez that was a lovely line you played there...." I always tell them it was because of the Commodore 64, and in particular the Last Ninja series(although Last Ninja 3 was nowhere near as good musically imho). They really were great times for music in computer games, and that is definitely not nostalgia talking, its the tunes, they were brilliant. Hubbard and Tel also did phenomenal work, but the Last Ninja series has to be number one, right?
