Wayde Burton I’ve always found it laughably ironic that despite the C64 being an American machine, it’s largely unknown in its native country, as is a lot of SID music. It’s insulting it gets overlooked in favour of the NES whose audio capabilities were patently inferior.

NES tunes are nice and good but the C64 was always at a completely different level. There is really no comparison, which is quite easy to see (hear) in hindsight.

I remember back in school, our teacher in music-class complained about all of these horrible squeaking and squealing sounds kids are confronted with when they are playing video games and Game Boy. He said that kids would lose touch with real music and with art in general. In the next lesson, I brought the Robocop-theme and Last Ninja-theme to school, which I recorded on tape from my C64. I asked him to listen to this track I brought because I wanted to prove that even video games have "real music". He really was impressed and said it would content real poetry. Then we started a discussion about the evolvement of music with the whole class and he stated that he might be wrong. He always was open to new things and was ready to learn a lesson himself.

There is some true finesse in this series... Doing so much, with so little. If I remember, there are only 3 sound channels. Mind blowing. Kinda sad that I missed out on games like this... all i knew was nintendo. Ah well...
@peterrabb72888 жыл бұрын
I recommend you watch an oscilloscope vid of these tunes. There are only three channels, but they are used very creatively. There are sometimes four or five "instruments" in the music, for example the "drum" wedged in the bass channel between the tunes, etc. Really mind blowing. LN2-The Mansion is on youtube for sure, but not all Last Ninja music sadly.

@Eliask8s There is a somewhat hard way: Go to the homepage of the High Voltage SID Collection and download the latest HVSC (which features all the game and demo tunes ever made on the C64 - more or less). Get a version of SIDPlay (also linked via the HVSC site). SIDPlay allows you to play the SID tunes but also to save them as WAV files that you can then convert into an MP3. Cheers, Phoxx.
