To those wondering what happened to Sheryl Zimmerer, she got initiated by Prabhupad and is known as Rasarani Dasi. Her mother came to embrace it too. Here is an interview 30 years after this video. Rasarani dasi: Well, because I was totally shy, I’ve always been shy, being interviewed by those reporters, I think the only way I could have done that was because of my commitment to ISKCON and the devotees and Prabhupada. I wouldn’t have normally left home, but I met the devotees and I just had to come and join the temple. It was a force that was way stronger than any of my personal qualities would prevent from happening. So I was very embarrassed. I was worried about my mother because she cried when I left home and she was upset, she didn’t understand. From an early age I used to tell her I came from another planet, I was from outer space, and she never really understood that. So it was difficult to explain why you’re going with this weird sect and why you’re bowing down on the dirty Paddington streets to some Indian person that we’ve never met before. So it was a scary time for me. I had just turned 18, and I had no worldly experience. So I was totally going against society, totally going against my parents. Val Zimmerer: My thoughts have mellowed considerably since then. I now realize the Hare Krishna Movement isn’t the monster I thought it was. Thirty years ago I was frightened of what I didn’t understand. I know many of my daughter’s devotee friends and I find them to be loving, warm people. I love my Hare Krishna grandsons, who have turned out to be normal everyday boys, and she’s come to no harm. In fact, she’s a lovely girl and I’m very proud of her.

same story i was watching last night on Indian tv where parents along with their devoted sons came up on the show and reporter had the same tone as the one in this video. parents were crying and calling their sons to go back home to look afyer them. but parents forget that by getting married and having kids and houses is maya and will not go with us where as god(doesnt matter what name) was with us and will always stay with soul.this thought gives peace but parenta like this dont get a lesson from their lives and dont realize what happiness they are talking about.? there is not such thing like happiness in this universe excwpt true name.

It’s surprising that there was any devotees in oz prior to the 1990s knowing how old fashioned , English and conservative the country was, and even if the 90s there was rampant homophobia like in England and America prior to the 70s. A follow up would be great , what happened to these people? Remained in iskcon, left, received family acceptance, was embroiled in the scandals etc

The lady in the video waxes lyrical about serving the spiritual master but I think the spiritual master is the servant of the devotees. Many have complained about women not being treated equally in ISKCON such as few female gurus or pujaris. I often chant in Centennial Park in the foot-steps of the master and invite others to do so too.

But as I am a being myself, just like you, I dont bow down to any other beings. I am the god of MYuniverse, just as you are the god of YOUR universe. Thats it.
