Real time isn't an issue for me. I'm writing this four years after the vlog was published! This series on the Kennet and Avon is the most enjoyable of all the narrowboat videos I've watched - and I've watched at least a couple hundred. I don't know the canal well from first hand experience, but I'm quite familiar with North Somerset and Wiltshire, so this was a bit of a "homecoming" for the American armchair narrowboater! Thanks for the many of hours of pleasure you're providing for so many of us and for such a long time. I have watched some of your more recent videos starting with your crossing of the Wash.

Love the maps, sorry they depressed you, they are really great. Good to know the wound is healing. It's funny to see that the professional canal boaters are better at it than even the continuous cruisers. Finally maybe a photo of a duck on the camera could keep Georges attention.

Isn't it funny how the guys always end up steering, and the women end up operating the locks! Was the same for me and my wife too. I always offered to let her drive, but she never wanted to!
@lv_woodturner38997 жыл бұрын
You may have got up Caen Hill faster than you got down. This may be the longest period you have shown George sitting down. LOL I have to say each time I see the fluffy cover for the microphone, I think of the Star Trek episode "The trouble with tribbles". Seeing the traffic jam reminds us how easy it is for a couple of boats to make things difficult, especially around locks.
@MinimalList7 жыл бұрын
+LV_Woodturner It was pretty quick thanks to all the crew! Haha I think someone else mentioned that! If we were more professional we would keep it out of shot! But we are not! Haha There were a lot of boats out in October, I would have hated to do it in August! Jo
@lv_woodturner38997 жыл бұрын
I love that you are not professional and your informal style of presentation. Also love the furry microphone cover. Of course the real star of the channel is George, but do not tell him or it may go to his head and then he may ask you to pose him for Wegman Weimaraner style photographs. LOL Dave.

+LV_Woodturner agree, George is a star, am sure people only watch our channel for him!

Ok! I found what I recalled from my last comment. At about the 8.27 mark of this vlog and assuming I have not miscounted you were about lock 35 and a wide beam pulls to starboard into the mouth of the side pound to let you and the other boat with you in the lock to pass. That is the Wessex Rose. We came down the flight on September 26, 2018 and moored up between 145 and 146 before jumping ship. We were told and there was a sign that suggested the Three Magpies at Sells Green was just a short distance further along. Turned out it was nearly a mile and a quarter!! Thirsty when we arrived and thirsty when we got back in time for dinner.
@MinimalList4 жыл бұрын
We remember that moment. We were wondering how we were all going to pass in the pound when the WR graciously moved it of the way. We are guessing they are well practiced at it! Glad you found your pint in the end!
@fredvolkman7544 жыл бұрын
Karen is amazing with that boat. 69.5ft x 12.5 ft 50 Tonnes. We were on the K & A in 2018 and some numpties in day hire boats were all over the canal. She stopped and assessed a space on the bank. Line up the boat and moved it sideways with the prop and thruster into the space with 6" clearance bow and stern as it she was side slipping a helicopter. That is why we - David as well - refer to her as The Captain.

Great video. Not sure if I've already told you (apologies if I have) but I'm now watching from my own Liverpool boat, a baby version of yours! It's a 45 foot cruiser that's also very orange and I love it. I even like the glass cabinet between the kitchen and dinette. It's great for glasses because I'm not teetotal! I'm glad there was nothing seriously wrong with Michael on this occasion but it's always best to check. Thank you for sharing your journey, I'm really enjoying it. That little boat pulling its log store into the lock was funny. I wonder if that needs its own licence!
@MinimalList7 жыл бұрын
+Sylvia Page congratulations on the boat! Good to hear that you love it! Where are you moored? Maybe we'll cruise past one day! Haha yes the wood boat was funny, it amazes me what people carry, some roofs are really overloaded too, I don't know how they see to steer! Jo

I am beginning to think of the pair of you side by side as "Canal Gothic" a classic image worthy of immortalizing. Perhaps the first element of a Minimal List line of items for sale. ( Others may prefer the " King " George landscape portrait, showing that most regal Hound, or The " I am the Walrus " meme featuring certain well loved bearded Gentleman. (no not Santa Claus.) This one might make a good T shirt) Cheers!

Hello Jo and Mike, your comments about Caen Hill Flight started me wondering, so I looked it up on Google Earth and I was amazed at the total number of locks needed to climb that hill, I think I counted thirty something! Am I right and how long did it take to go up?
@MinimalList7 жыл бұрын
+Graham Bearman 29 in total! Six above, seven below and sixteen in the main flight! I'm exhausted just thinking about it! Try searching for drone footage of it on KZbin, it's pretty spectacular!

Those time-lapse bits look great. I do have a minor beef (hey, watch it, no size jokes!) with one song clip you use - the one that's soulful but has the vocals cutting off. Sounds like you're changing radio stations. Otherwise, I could pretty much handle a daily vid from you guys.
@MinimalList7 жыл бұрын
+Lee Bruner it didn't have any vocals, that's how I downloaded it! Weird! It is really hard finding good royalty free music to use. Thanks for watching 😀

Enjoyed that vid - it seems you are having fun despite the pressure to make progress. George looks happy and content too. Change of subject - oily air filter - I do not want to set any hares running or alarm you unduly- but - this could be due to higher than designed crankcase pressure. This could be caused by a blocked metal gauze in the breather pipe (easily cleaned with a bit of diesel fuel).Here is some simple background reading.ddcsn-ddc.freightliner.com/cps/rde/xbcr/ddcsn/5-MBE900-03a.pdf

Not a tithe barn for the farm...for the church
@MinimalList7 жыл бұрын
+Diana B might have explained that vaguely; if I read it correctly, the abbey was itself a huge farm complex, and the largest landowner in the area. All the local farms within the tithe area would bring produce to store in the tithe barn over winter, and they'd leave 10% as tithe/rent. The barn itself was also used to store the abbey's own produce as well as the received tithe, and apparently management of all of it (by someone called a reeve) was an enormously complex affair. M
