Cody, if you have an oscilloscope brother, can you also post the before and after repairs showing the cams and crank correlation for these types of videos please Sir. Maybe you can explain how far off timing was by viewing the waveform, why was timing off, jumped, VVT problem, timing components stretched, etc. Much appreciated. First-time viewer.

Hi. I need to do this job pretty soon. Was wondering does the closed chain slip over all the sprockets ok and I have a manual that says I need to remove the sump?? Is this correct??
@CodytheCarGuy7 жыл бұрын
I did lower the oil pan some and pulled the front cover off, and i liked the febi continuous chain and not have to worry about the master link even though i have the tool. And a year later its still running perfect its pretty much my daily. Ill be selling the correct chains on my website soon too for the 03-05 1.8 motor so just let me know if you need it

Checked my chain it ended up showing about 6-7 degree stretch (degrees on the pulley) when camshaft lines lined up. How bad is 6 or 7 degrees? Otherwise the sprocket gears were perfect and chain was really tight..
@CodytheCarGuy8 жыл бұрын
Well your right about where it can jump teeth then, they are notorious around 100k to jump teeth and bend all the valves.

Cody, can you help me? UK viewer. 2004, c180 kompressor automatic: my car jumped a tooth on the inlet camshaft sprocket and was transported back to my house. It was left for about nine months before I began repairing it a few weeks ago. I changed the timing chain and tensioner, turned the engine, by hand, about six times to check that the timing marks aligned, boxed it back together and went to start it. On turning the key, the hazard lights began flashing and could not be extinguished via the hazard warning light switch. I turned it off and tried again, only to hear the click of the starter solenoid. On checking the engine, I found that I was now unable to turn the engine via the crankshaft pulley( it can be turned anti-clockwise ). I stripped it down again and checked in case a 'bolt' had dropped down the timing chain cover, but nothing! Do you have any idea as to the reason why this has happened. The hazard lights flashing may have been due to the alarm being activated but no siren sounded(may not be working) Thanks, Ted Murphy.

Hi Cody. I have question about the crankshaft pulley. My crank pulley, outer edge has slipped on the pulley itself so it doesn’t line up with #1 Piston at the top. So am I able to just line the piston up by eye?
@CodytheCarGuy4 жыл бұрын
I would check that pulley over if that indeed did rotate then the rubber is bad and it's just a matter of time before it comes off. I have set timing to top dead center before and I go for the middle of where it floats. As you rotate and keep going you will notice you can turn the crank a little and the piston does not move at first at top dead center and then go back and find about where the middle of that movement is and call it tdc. I would replace my crank pulley if that was my car or pull it and make sure its not keyed and then reset it correctly if it has a key then the pulley is bad.
@iBoogieTM4 жыл бұрын
Cody the Car Guy thanks Cody. I did just that yesterday afternoon. Found the middle of the float/pause of the piston stroke. Fingers crossed 🤞 I’ll reply with how it goes when I start it. Waiting on tool kit and parts

hi, how did you get the casing back on without damaging the head gasket? trying to do this now but really struggling
@CodytheCarGuy5 жыл бұрын
Loosened the oil pan so it hung down some and used a little ultra black on top of the cover where it meets the head gasket and at the corner where the cover meets the head and block. Still going strong to this day and no leaks.

@jesse75 Жыл бұрын
@@c.scherer6476 I'm a seasoned mechanic. Rebuilt around 500 engines. With the maintenance on our 2005 compressor, we got 250,000 miles. Engine still ran good, but wanted to change timing chain. Why ruin the engine right ? Took the valve cover off, and all the stuff on the front. I used white out to mark everything. But I noticed the timing mark on the pulley did not line up TDC. The cams were lined up, but not at the pulley. Did the screwdriver trick to find TDC in number 1 spark plug hole. But timing on pulley not lining up. Chain did not jump. Computer blew no codes. Engine ran good. Plugs all clean. The teeth on the sprockets were sharp and worn. I replaced them. Put it back together. Now it won't run. Everything lined up the way I found it. I'm so pissed off. Should have just let it break. I have 5 other engines to work on right now. After they are done, going to tackle it again. Junk value on these cars is nothing. Pick n pull can kiss my ass. If it wasn't for emissions, I'd just put a small block in it. When running, I got 38 miles per gallon. Somebody modified the exhaust in Nevada. But now to get tags, a referee has to look at it. Touchy picky engine. One thing I know about this car. The engine compartment gets hot and the sensors and wiring break down. Look at that stupid plastic water crossover pipe above the exhaust manifold. The referee gave me trouble because I rapped it in heat resistant foil.

Hi Cody, question do you know if 1.8 Engines on this Mercedes is Non Interference or it is Interference engine? Someone is selling one with a snapped Timing Chain and im deciding weather its is worth it or not? Thank you

It is Interference, when the chain jumped on my car it bent some valves so I replaced everything and both timing chains and guides and tensioner and been running perfect ever since.
