Agreed and I often say that I think the military would be a good option for inner city youth. Certainly, the military is not for everyone but I think that a lot of people can benefit from giving it a shot. I remember watching a special on gangs in Chicago here on KZbin and some people in the comments section were saying that they thought the young men in the news clip(who were in gangs like the Black Disciples, Gangster Disciples, Black P.Stones but I don't think that the clip showed any members of The Latin Kings and La Raza) would be better off in the military than in gangs risking their lives, getting criminal records, going to prison and fighting over bullshit, really and fighting over blocks that they don't own and I agree. One ex-convict who was a guest on the podcast of another ex-convict, Marcus ''Big Herc'' Timmons, was encouraging troubled youth to try the military and he said that the military saved a lot of people from going to prison and I couldn't agree more. There are other options besides being an entertainer/rapper or a athlete or getting involved in a life of crime-whether that entails selling drugs, robberies or being in a gang, etc but sadly, a lot(but not ALL) of young people in inner city neighborhoods across the United States don't feel like there are more options for them and that's a mindset that I hope will change because it NEEDS to change. I'm not going to say something like ''people can be anything they want to be in life'' because that simply isn't true, you can't be anything you want, as a great example,look at how many young men aspire to be SEALs but ultimately don''t make it through the training, so again, no people can't be anything they want. But I do think that young people in the 'hood need to realize that there's more that they can do and be than they might think. I hate seeing wasted potential but for some young people who have criminal records and who don't have their high school diploma or a GED, I know that the reality is that they won't be able to get in. I don't know if this would be a soft-ball question but I wonder if Mike and Remi think that the military would be a good option for inner city youth across the country? That's also a question I'd like to send in to Jocko on his podcast.

@@faded9043 Yeah but look what happened to Death Row Records and look where Suge Knight is now. He had Bloods AND Crips working TOGETHER in the same building. As one former Death Row Records employee said, anyone that had a lick of common sense knew that Death Row Records was going to hit the ground on fire. I did like the idea of black ownership and taking these young men from the ghetto and turning them into successful millionaires but Suge and Death Row couldn't keep the street/gangster lifestyle separate from the music. When you have ACTIVE gang members working as your security, that's not a story that's going to end well.

Great interview! Man I wish the military would continue 2 work with young people like they did with this situation, I remember I was turning 18, My dad died when I was 16 & my mom shortly after, I grew up in a fucked up part of LA & all I knew & was surrounded by was destruction, I tried desperately 2 get into the military & the Navy was my last hope but even they wouldn’t or couldn’t look past some minor drug convictions, To this day I believe I would’ve excelled in the military but instead I was forced to excel with destruction & it nearly killed me or got me life many times, Thankfully I finally figured shit out BUT man a lot of young people just need that hand up instead of the hand outs there currently being given

I’m sensing an underlying theme within the teams that a lot of guys find Christ during their time as a Navy SEAL or shortly after they get out... as someone who started walking with the Lord later on in life at the age of 22, I’m 28 now and recently I’ve sensed this growing desire to want to become a Navy SEAL tho I’m conflicted because it could just be God speaking to me thru the testimonies of so many guys who had a touch life, were broken down time after time, dealt with affliction and suffering on many fronts, and came out the other side a better, stronger, more spiritual and peaceful person. I might be too old to join based off the Navy’s requirements but I feel the best physically I’ve ever felt in my life now. Even if it’s ultimately not my calling to do so, I feel blessed either way from the stories I’ve heard along the way.

28 isn’t too old for special operations. Most Army ODA guys are 30+. Sure you’ll be older than the 18-22 young bucks, but if you can hang you can hang. Age doesn’t matter.

He's certainly right about the hazing in an 81 platoon in the marines. You literally can go on a deployment and be hazed the entire damn time until the day you get junior guys. It went on for like 2 years straight with my group of guys. Granted, it gets better over time, but 2 years is a long time to get hazed for. He's right about the physical hazing though - It's out of control in the marines infantry, and a big reason why I got out. If you weren't beating the crap out of your junior guys you weren't going to be promoted.
