I tour around an area of the Peak District, which lies outside the National Park boundaries due to its industry. However, in spite of the towns and villages being more commercial and industrial I am convinced that this region can still just be as spectacular in its own way.
Filmed in the Peak District in the county of Derbyshire. Locations include Sparrowpit, Chapel-en-le-Frith, Eccles Pike, Combs, Whaley Bridge and New Mills.
Written, researched, directed, camera and sound, edited and music by Patrick Leach.
Any other names credited in this film, i.e. Bob Morgan and Martin Roy, are pseudonyms, which I used at the time of making this film. However, I no longer use these pseudonyms as I want viewers to be clear that my films are completely my own work.

I have taken a train from Grindleford to Manchester via The Edale Tunnel . It is one of the most picturesque II’ve done. It passes through a lot of this area including New Mills. Through the tunnel you come out in a Lowry painting. I’ve not walked much of it but have visited Torrs and Walked the bridge, it was a bit scarey but glad I did it. I loved New Mills industrial heritage so thanks for sharing it.

What a Lovely Video. We’ve hired a Canal Boat for a week on the Peak Forest Canal and wondered what was nearby. I can’t wait to explore this area.

Great video, Patrick. Especially liked your bit about New Mills, where the River Goyt snaking its way through the town can be so easily missed as it is deep down in the gorge. Saw you walk past the New Mills Heritage Centre on the path/steps down to the Torrs. Inside it is a fabulous model of the town under construction which is well worth a visit!

A superb early video of yours, Patrick. Well it's almost home territory for me, with hailing from Buxton. The splendid viaducts at Chapel Milton I've crossed over many times with my employment at British Rail and working the limestone trains over them. Chapel is a grand town, especially around the Market place area, and thence on through Furness Vale to the old industrial town of New Mills. The Millennium Walkway is something I've yet to experience, looking so good in the bottom of the valley there. Now Bugsworth, is a place that I've never actually been to, only passing on the trains up on the embankment. It certainly seems great around that canal basin. The Navigation there, I used to know a pub landlord in Buxton, many moons ago, who worked for 'Elsie Tanner' of Coronation Street, when she was supposed to be licensee of the premises. All in all a great video, many thanks.

Can't believe it's been nearly 9 years since I made this. I would like to return to these places at some point in the hear future to make new films. The Millenium Walkway is amazing to see. Personal also to me as a ex-work colleague designed it. There is a plaque on the bridge in his honour as he sadly died during the London Bombings. Hi Patrick. I have only just seen your vidéo, and à happy new year to you for 2023. It was very nostalgic for me to see the video of chapel-en-le-frith, and I spent many years living in the Peak District, and delighted to see your documentary. According to the research that I have done on the name, Chapel-en-le-frith, I believe that the name was given due to a small chapel that was built in a clearing. You mention that according to the translation it meant "Chapel" in the forest. The French name for a forest in French is "foret". I believe that the "Frith", had been changed over the years. There is a French word called "Frish", and translated means an unkempt wooded area, which would explain the name of Chapel-en-le-frith.

What a fascinating film this one was, particularly that amazing double viaduct at Chapel Milton. You seem to be able to get to the places that others just pass by without a cursory glance. So much to marvel at , it is too much to absorb with just the one viewing, so I will be back!

Castle Naise has an Iron Age settlement on top and very active in UFO sightings, as use to live below. One was in broad daylight, extremely large and clear as a bell, a phosphorescent disc that travelled quite slow. One regular sightings was a small craft that would whizz to the top of the hill, suddenly stop, zig zag down out of sight......or be seen zig zagging up, stop, then zoom off at speed out of sight. If camping in the area, always worth sitting out with a wine or beer, just in case :-)

Although Sparrowpit seems rather a bleak place, The Wanted Inn is well known for it's food. At one time The Beehive in Combs would serve a pint of smoked shrimp with fresh baked crusty bread.....perfect with a pint of real ale after a hike - do not know if they still serve this but maybe worth asking :-)

Very interesting that Patrick,some great places to visit and packed with information about them. Although I go walking in the Peak District I'v never visited any of these places,I don't know why the V shaped viaduct isn't more well known,and I loved the walkway. When I get round to visiting I'll call in the Navigation and raise a glass to you. Thanks again for sharing these wonderful walks and films. Pete.

I pass that viaduct a lot so you can't miss it, but as you say I'm also surprised it's not better known than it is. It's on the road between Chapel and Chinley. never actually been inside the Navigation myself, another one of those things on my to-do list! :)

Hi. Do not know what is like these days, but years ago 'The Wanted' in Sparrow Pit' was famous for it' excellent food, all local produce including trout from local river. Worth checking reviews to see if whoever owns it now, has kept the high standard.

I found this vey interesting Patrick , as I am based largely in and around a lot of industry , with British Aerospace , and English Electric , Now Alstom train builders very much to the forefront of local industry , Where cotton mills and weavers were the main stay ... Newmills is again a place I ve passed through but was,nt aware of everything that sits within the town , your climbup the pike was equally impressive .... with stunning views , Personal favorite view the double railway viaduct , that probably wont surprise you mate ....... Glad this was of interest Frank. I particularly enjoyed filming this one at the time, it was something a little different. That double viaduct at Chapel Milton is marvelous, I pass it a lot when I'm out working in the area and it never fails to amaze me. The wonderful Millennium Walkway in New Mills was of special interest to me. Although I didn't make any comment in the film you may have noticed a plaque there in one shot, which was in memory of a work colleague. He was the civil engineer in charge of its construction, who sadly died in the 2005 London Bombings. Now that you've seen this film it ties in perfectly with my next FB post. Referring to your question at 7:05 of this great video. Eccles comes from the Latin word for church. Ecclesia. There are two areas in Sheffield that were the centres of church life prior to Sheffield Cathedral being built. Ecclesfield and Ecclesall. Named after the (then) very important churches that stood there. Today they are just very old small churches compared to the Cathedral. Eccles Pikes could refer to a church on a hilltop. Probably dating from the 12th century. That would be my guess.

Thanks for that Paul. I'm sure you are right about the origin of Eccles. Strangely in the case of Eccles Pike there was little information online about it when I did the research for this video a few years back. I'm familiar with the Sheffield areas you mention, more so Ecclesall as whenever I travel to Sheffield I sometimes drive along Ecclesall Road.

As there are remains of an iron age settlement on top of castle naise and up until quite recently, local villagers would go up top Eccles Pike to dance in a circle with seasonal revelry on midsummers eve, it may well have had a chapel at some time as the old Christian churches were more often than not, built on sacred pagan ground . The area has much from pre-christian times including an unsung nameless stone circle in a farmers field :-)

The 'Chapel' in Chapel en le Frith was originally where the church now stands and I believe the original Chapel was from around the 11th century. It is at the bottom of the road that leads up to 'Eccles Pike'...could that be Church (Eccles) you refer to....even though its a the bottom of the 'Pike'
