Hello! Today's project is classic the badger plane with intermittent boxing and the offset tote.
I need that tool to clean sides of side escapment planes.
For the body i choosed quartersawn beech. Why quartersawn? Because that material is the most stabile. That's all. As you probably noticed the sole is always oriented on the side where the bark was. Some people talk that the barks side of the wood is the hardest. Some people talk about wood movement during changing humidity. In that case the sole will get concave profile, wich is better than convex. In that reason the grain should be straight and parallel to the sole. Another people talk abour the wedge fitting during changin humidity, quartersawn wood keeps the wedge tight.
I am big fan of the second theory.
So, what's the materials??
- beech for the body
- spalted beech for the tote
- jasmine wood for boxing
- boiled linseed oil and shellac orange as finish
- an old laminated plane blade
The sole and the right side are free of shellac, they will work on the wood sufrace during planing.
The right edge of the sole will be the most loaded, so i choose intermittent boxing to make it more durable. The grain direction of the boxing is perpendicular to the sole.
Oh man, that a lot of words. I'm curious who read it ;)

Witajcie! Dzisiejszy projekt to klasyczny badger plane (taki duży kątnik) z przerywanym boxingiem i przesuniętym na prawo pochwytem.
Potrzebuję tego narzędzia do strugania boków strugów z bocznym wylotem stróżyn.
Na korpus wybrałem buk rdzeniowy. Dlaczego rdzeniowy? Ponieważ ten materiał jest najbardziej stabilny. To wszystko.
Jestem wielkim fanem drugiej teorii.
Ciekaw jestem, kto to przeczytał;)

Hi there! I think I have seen you in the comments of David W before, so he needs no introduction to you (if I'm mistaken, look him up on youtube) I asked him the question once about the end grain orientation with the suggestion to have the groth rings orientated vertical instead of horizontal, so it would be stable in the width of the blade and have no chance of pinching the blade He respectfully disagreed, I quote his reply: "Hi-the lateral movement is manageable (you just give the iron a little bit of room to move, or if things get tight, float out a little bit of material). You can make a plane with the wood turned 90 degrees from typical if you'd like, but the issue is that the durability between the rays is not very good, so the plane will wear much faster. You can smooth plane both faces of beech (the quartered face and the flatsawn face) and get a good idea how much more wear resistant it is on the bark side on the flatsawn face. It's pretty stark." So his theory is about the resistance of the plane, and I agree with that personally I'm glad to be watching your new videos again, you have an awsome workshop, with sunlight! Very nice

Nice fix! I agree about quartersawn wood still holding the blade with changes in moisture. The only thin that then changes is the angle of the blade. And only very slightly at that. Beautifull plane and nice to see a master at work...

So that was a great way to start my Monday, beautiful plane. I read the description untill the language changed to one i dont know. And I think having the sole concave would be better because it probably slows the progression from a fine mouth plane for joining/smoothing to a wide mouth plane for scrubbing down a good bit. I personally don't think the outer rings are any harder than the inner rings on a tree, i just agree with having the sole concave instead of convex makes more sense to me in the long run.

That spalted beech is phenomenal. Has it lost any substantial strength or become “spongy” anywhere due to the spalting, or is it mostly just cosmetic? I’ve made tool handles that disintegrated when I used spalted oak that was a bit too figured 😂

I'm amazed at how you're able to find quarter sawn wood that is thick enough to make a plane. Impossible here in Mn.
