It ended in 1999 ... it was a third rate competion as It was self-explanitary ... all you had to win was The F.A. Cup to be in the European Cup Winners Cuo! The U.E.F.A. Cup (then) you had to come 2nd,3rd or 4th or win The League Cup. You needed to Win The League to get into The European Cup (then) . So The Europa League (ex U.E.F.A. Cup) is still the second rate Euro Competion and The European Champions League (ex European Cup) is The Top European Competion encorparating the old rules of The U.E.F.A. Cup qualifying status.

@@merseydave1 It was a hypothetical question, Leeds could have done the double that year and were to prove better in Europe than Liverpool in the coming years,(1960s) there way of playing like Man Utd was better suited to winning in Europe, as was found out when Leeds beat Liverpool in the fairs cup semi final at Anfield, YOU GOT BEAT LOL!! And then wining in the final in 1968 and 1970-71 you did not win anything in Europe till 1973, you copied us!! I saw a lot of those games. P.S Ian St John was a dirty player putting 6 studs into our keeper in the F.A Cup final (and dont' ever tell a Yorkshire man to keep quiet.)

That is Three Top Flight Domestic Wins (as the league cup was laughed at then) in the 1960s ... Along with this E.C.W.C. Final they reached The European Cup semi final in 1965 and lost to a paid up ref in the second leg ... on leaving the pitch Tommy Smith Kicked the referee in the shin and The Referee Did Nothing!. You mention The Inter Cities Fairs Cup which was devalued - superseded and reconfigurated in the U.E.F.A. Cup ... well Liverpool won that Three times and Course 7 F.A. Cups 19 League Championships 8 League Cups 15 Charity/Community Shields Oh and SIX European Cups ... so in comparison to the meagre tally of what Leeds have won Liverpool F.C. Have every Right To Tell You To SHUT UP !!!

We played the best teams England and Scotland have EVER (apart from Liverpool) had and you may not remember because your probably 14 and still playing with your two peas and a maggot, that England were world champions in 66, Celtic European champions 67, Leeds Euefa champions 68 and Man Utd European champions 68 liver pool won FUCK ALL in Europe.
