Sophie there have been children born with fused legs which are believed to be where the mermaid myth came from. Now they have surgery to separate their legs but there’s a suggestion that in the past they were seen as being cursed and were cast into the sea where they would try to reach safety by approaching ships - this creating the mermaid legends.

Haenyeo or haenyo are female divers in the South Korean province of Jeju, whose livelihood consists of harvesting a variety of mollusks, seaweed, and other sea life from the ocean, holding their breath for up to 2 minutes.They call them the mermaids of the sea BUT THEY ARE NOT REALLY MERMAIDS Sophie :)) Manatees, dugongs and sea cows have also been mistaken for mermaids by sailors that spent months at sea, with sun on their head. Manatees , Dugongs hold their infants like nursing mothers and have human-like breasts that are in the same position as a woman’s. That combined with a fish like tail apparently gave rise to the legend of mermaids. Those guys must have been REALLLLY lonely..they are completely hairless, faces!!!.look up them up
