In this lesson, we learn that all quadratic equations can be solved by a method known as completing the square. This method involves changing the left side of the quadratic into a perfect square, which means that we can then take the square root of both sides to find the solutions.
All quadratics can be solved this way, even if they aren't factorable. The famous quadratic formula is actually derived and comes from the method of completing the square, which is something we will discuss in a future lesson.

Give this gentleman a Nobel Prize for education! Name him the Friend of Humanity plus a Congressional Medal. The part of "time 1/2 and square it" is the eye of the needle, which has stopped millions of camels to get through it. Sir, you have done a great job to open the gate to algebra heaven.

Best math videos. Thank you. It is fascinating how the process of dividing by 2 and squaring makes the equation workable regardless of values that are not factorable.

Wow is all I can say. Great lesson. Thank you so much. My brain has been in melt down over x^ + (x+1)^ = 25. I got it down to x^ + x = 12, but that is as far as I could go. I followed along w/paper & pen, each step. Starting at 10:15 - 15:25. My answers are 3 or 4. 3 solves for my x Yes, it's the old 3,4,5 triangle.

How does it work with this one. Y^2 +3y -10=0. I don't seem to get the right answer. Get (y +3/2)^2, which expands to y2 +3y +(3/2)^2 -10 =0+(3/2)^2. Aghhhhh
