Wo Lakota

Wo Lakota

Күн бұрын

This video is part of a set of interviews for the WoLakota Project.
www.wolakotaproject.org
“WoLakota” implies balance and coming together. The WoLakota project supports students in high-need schools, pairing trained mentor-teachers with new teachers and providing Courage to Teach circles to tend to the ʻheartsʼ of each. Mentors support the embedding of the Oceti Sakowin Essential Understandings (OSEU) into practice, complementing the Common Core. The OSEU address the achievement gap of American Indian students by embracing their identity, and promote cultural understanding among non-native students and teachers. Lakota Elder Dottie LeBeau states, “When we approach teaching with one worldview…we create systems of failure in our schools.”
WoLakota closes the circle into a system of understanding and success.
The WoLakota Project is a partnership between TIE and the SD Department of Education

Sister Beautifully Bald Eagle I am SO Sorry you lost your Dad too. Sister Do you feel him watching over you like I do my Cherokee Dad sometimes?? Can you sometimes *Hear his Voice like I do Dads? It will be One Year Ago MAY 13. It’s a very fresh wound we were SO Close. I have no one to speak & sing Tsalagi with now. The elders gathered twice to pray for him. 🦅 🐺 they called him “Jack Son of Chiefs” then (humbled to tears) they sent him a blanket as he slowly crossed over. Mom is *Trying to stay strong. Married 65 yrs. Tell me something sweet about your Father please & let us cling together. I/we did teach my 3 Cubs “our land” and our ways but sadly they showed no interest in learning our language. They chose Spanish as a secondary language instead. But at least they KNOW All About Our People and Our Land. The Blue Ridge Mtns. Please share something Sweet about your beloved Dad & I hope you Feel my Pure Sister ((Huggg)). N2 Well : named Princess Mustang Bushyhead… lovely name right? But Sister I’m a young 61 & I was named Mustang *Before the Ford Car lol. You’re in my prayers, OhitikahWin. 🥰🪶

Grateful for this oral history from Chief Bald Eagle. He lived in two worlds-the time of his Grandfather White Bull and his time with Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse learning about his heritage as Lakota and the world of the White man. Chief Bald Eagle learned to live in modern world and still keep his heritage alive. Passing this on to all of us. He truly is a HERO especially in not being bitter for all that his ancestors went through and the miserable way they were all treated. He is someone to look up to. Thank you to all his family. We can learn so much from him❤️

David Bald Eagle's stories are historical documents and need to be preserved. The "original sin" of USA is the near anihilation of the indigenous people. It is extraordinary to me how little the indigenous people are acknowledged in politics or the media. Reparations need to be made to Indians as well as descendants of slaves.

I'm Choctaw on my fathers side and French and Cherokee on my mother's side, m sister brother and I have feelings which tell us of danger or trouble. My brother who just happens to be mentally handicapped actually hears audible warnings when trouble is near. Once the voice said "they're coming" and he went out of the house in the middle of the night and hid out in the woods while some thugs came looking for him. He had known a couple of them but hadn't seen or thought of them for a couple years but that night he knew who the voice was warning him about. I had a similar situation when I was in the military, a voice but not audible said "don't do it" but I understand that I was supposed to take a different path from other times. So I circled around and saw that a row of soldiers were laying prone with their weapons pointed towards where I would normally have been. So I continued on and went beyond the spot where I would have been and again I saw three men prone with guns pointed towards where I would have been. I've had other experiences but this one proved beyond a doubt for me that it wasn't a coincidence.

I have Native American ancestry. My family told me i have Mi'kmaq and Iroquois bloodline. My great grandfather was half Native American half French. Sadly, i didn't learn much about my Native American ancestry. My grandmother's cousin told me we were realated to a war chief of the Mi'kmaq people. People misunderstand the meaning of the war chief. I learned that war was the last final option if civil and peaceful resolution were not followed. The war chief gathered a council, then when agreement was made and agreed, theyd go to the enemy to try to come to a peaceful resolution. War was the last and final option and had to be agreed to by the council. My ancestors had a funtional way and civil way of resoltion long before settlers came.

Thank you for this interview! It reaches deeply! My great grandmother was Cherokee full blod. Sadly, I never met her. My grandmother married an abusive alcoholic Scotsman. She divorced him after my dad and his brothers were young men. She finally married a good and kind man. My grandmother visited us only a few times. I was curious about having Cherokee blood, but never found out much about our family history, and so my curiosity remained unfulfilled. I read Black Elk Speaks several times over the years and derived much of great value from Black Elk’s writings. I’ve read Russell Means’ book: Where White Men Fear to Tread. Also, books about Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse. I had close friends in the Navajo nation, two special friends, Allen June and his wife Virginia, (PHD in psychology and matriarch of the Red Dirt Clan. Alan June was a Navajo code talker in the US Marines during World War Two! Mr. June told me that, before he left for the war, a red bird flew up to his face and kissed his head. He knew then that he would return safely from the war. My heart is with these good people always! Bless Bless!

Those of us that are blessed to be living in the United States of America are very fortunate. I thank God daily that I am in this group. The USA is the greatest nation EVER and it provides opportunity for the pursuit of happiness for all people that wants to participate in our society with a good heart. No where in the world is there a better place to live. People from across the globe are trying to get into the USA and not many are leaving! Since the beginning of time, various groups (gangs, tribes, bands, ethnically similar people, etc) of men have fought, killed, enslaved, stole from, etc other groups of people. And so it was through out the world. There is nothing unique about how the USA came about except for the fact that our founding fathers were genius in setting our constitution and form of government. Long live the USA!

Many decades ago, in my homeland, England, we were told, according to Hollywood, that Custer died at the Little Big Horn, on a hill, surrounded by his wounded and dying troopers (Custer bravely protecting them of course) his two pearl handled revolvers in hand, firing until his bullets ran out. A little digging and research paints a slightly different picture, that the silly sod charged down a hill and was one of the first to fall, shot through the chest by a squaw. Now if you'll excuse me, I shall move to a respectful distance, and roar with laughter.
