having just had my 101 repaired after 30 years, and quickly realising that i haven't got a clue how it's supposed to work, these videos are great!

Nice video series on the SH-101, Mark! This was my first synth back in 1983. Still got it! You missed a big aspect of the "Auto" portamento setting: playing legato will trigger portamento, while playing staccato will not trigger it. This can yield some very expressive phrasing, especially with a release time > 0 (so notes sound connected, even played staccato). Since it's a mono synth, you can only sound one note at a time, but you get to choose which notes "slide" to the next one. Think like a trombone player. :)

Really enjoying this series to learn about my Behringer MS-1 (sorry 🤣). Nicely paced and great to watch. BTW as you mentioned twice so far about wondering why the 2 range controls… as I understand it, transpose just switches between 3 note ranges on the keyboard itself, while VCO range is separate (and would affect notes played via external sequencing) as is pretty normal, like on the Bass Station II and probably all other small keyboard synths. Loving the cat sounds btw haha.

This video serie is going to be super useful when i finish programming mine (see my 2 last vids if you're curious). So thanks!

I know this is off-topic, but I respect the viewership of @autmaticgainsay. Loved my sh-101, but it lived in the shop. Can I have my cake and eat it too with the new boutique? Did they nail it? Please say yes.

Thanks for this serie, buddy. I have my 101 hooked up with a Tanzbär or a 606. Great fun!

I love how both us, the viewers and you are discovering this synth together, lol.

I'm going to grab my SH-01A and try to recreate these sounds as you present them. And yes, to all the analog purists I realize that my sounds will be COLD and HARSH, but that's ok because I have drummers' ears. 😏

honestly, the SH-01a sounds pretty much spot on.

Hi Haze... I owned a 101 for years but now own an 01A. It sounds exactly the same. I do not care what the purists think, it sounds and feels like a 101 - with one exception. The modulation slider things (which are awful, in my opinion) just cannot ever simulate what you can do with the mod-bender. As far as I remember, all the classic Rolands had this type of modulation wheel so why oh why have they put those dumm sliders on the Boutiques?

Sounds like auto applies the portamento only when you play legato

This definitely kills the 1 LFO meme. Such a great synth.
@AndyVonal6 жыл бұрын
What doe "1 LFO meme" mean? Can you explain it in plain English (or French, or German, or Spanish or even Latin...)
@AndyVonal6 жыл бұрын
Forgive the crap typing... "does" and "?".

Whenever a modern synth comes out (most recently with Korg Prologue) with one LFO people complain about how 1 LFO isn't enough, but with image macro memes. Of course so many cherished classic synths only use one LFO and still manage to sound amazeballs. edit: You do know you can edit comments, don't you?
@AndyVonal6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Robert! I get it now...still not sure what a meme is...is it an internet grumble? And, no, I didn't know I could edit a comment. I will look into that - we learn something new etc... And yes, you are right about the 1 LFO thing. I have a Novation SUperNova which has 2 and further buried modulation capabilities. How often do I use the 2nd LFO? Erm... hardly ever. I still think that the 101 was the best synth I ever owned because it's impossible (almost) to get a crap sound out of it. It always sounds great. Thanks for the explanation.

I just have to make yodelling cat sounds now. One day they will be cool....
