05-07 2.7 Dodge Charger Water Pump Replacement

Replacing the water pump on a 2007 Dodge Charger with a 2.7 V6. The timing chains had been replaced about a year ago so we reused them, but this video would also be helpful in showing you how to replace the front chains if you were doing them. The 2.7 engine is in several cars and the process is very similar no matter which vehicle you are working on. I watched your video to get an idea of what to expect. It's a 2006 Dodge Stratus.The motor has around 174,000. I decided to take it to the shop I retired from. I bit the bullet and went with a complete upgraded timing chain/water pump kit. The main issue is that it is a time-consuming job. I do like the car. It rides well and looks sharp for a 4 door, and the instrument panel isn't loaded up with a lot of electronics. If I can get another 100,000, I'll be happy.

I recently changed the water pump and followed all the steps. when I turned the car on it was making a rattling noise. it was Coming from the timing tentioner from the passenger side. Do I need to replace it ? cause I believe it failed.

Thank you. Getting the chain back on is no cake walk. I’m sure that it can be done by yourself, but you may have to get creative. The rest of the job is fairly easy.

My Charger is leaking all its coolant instantly (while parked) from the weep hole directly beside the thermostat housing. It overheated and barely made it home, it died in my driveway and a sound of "baseball card in spokes" was made while pulling into my driveway (which is a hill). I figure it's the water pump, but what are the chances it's a cracked cylinder/blown gasket? I've already replaced the thermostat+ housing. Also, which brand of water pump would you recommend between Duralast, Dayco or Murray? Finally, what ratchet is that, and do you recommend that? I've been looking at a Milwaukee. Thanks!

It’s probably junk now. I’d let it cool down and see what it sounds like then. If it doesn’t sound normal, start looking for a new engine. If it sounds normal, then I would try a water pump. We used a Murray because that’s what the customer provided. I would have preferred ac delco. The ratchet is some no name Amazon junk. I really like Milwaukee and dewalt. Check out torque test channel for some good tool info and testing.

Do you have to replace the timing chain when replacing the water pump and if not how would you know my water pump went out so I'm wondering if I need to replace the chain too ?????

It’s the same amount of work whether you replace the chain or not. So if it hasn’t been replaced, it wouldn’t hurt to do it at the same time as the water pump.

They’re good. Sometimes their valve cover gaskets can be a little tough to get in because they tend to be very “rubbery” and will fall out when flipped upside down.

​@@automotiveinsight I'm in the middle of this job right now in my coworkers drive way...I wish I would've turned this job down... Pain in the butt .. Plus I don't feel like the timing is right .. Marks are lined up every time I turn it twice... It's just that sometimes it seems like either the new tensioner backs off or the cam gear jumps forward a bit causing slack to be in the chain between the right can gear and water pump... That's making me super nervous...
