SOUTH DERBYSHIRE WALK FEATURING SWARKESTONE BRIDGE, TICKNALL, FOREMARK RESERVOIR AND CALKE ABBEY
"Time Out in Ticknall”
Filmed 12th March 2016
Post-production completed 21st April 2016
I explore part of South Derbyshire, an area of the county I know very well, but only ever visit for work purposes. Today I decide to take some time out in the area and go on a circular walk from the pretty village of Ticknall passing Foremark Reservoir and on to the lovely Calke Abbey…..
Filmed in the county of Derbyshire. Locations include Swarkestone Bridge, Ticknall, Foremark Reservoir and Calke Abbey.
Written, researched, directed, camera and sound, edited and music by Patrick Leach.
Any other names credited in this film, i.e. Bob Morgan and Martin Roy, are pseudonyms, which I used at the time of making this film. However, I no longer use these pseudonyms as I want viewers to be clear that my films are completely my own work.

I've never seen any footage of film of South Derbyshire, before, Patrick. The Swarkestone bridge is an amazingly long and very old structure indeed. The River Trent looked very high in this video, I noticed. Ticknall seems a very pleasant village with its well architectured buildings. That Foremark reservoir appears to be a vast body of water. Calke Abbey looks to be quite a large building, and I bet it must have taken a lot of heating up in the winter when in full occupation, but it really is a splendid place. Many thanks for this enjoyable film, Patrick, and hope that you are feeling much better.

This has been yet another excellent video, Patrick! Despite being born and brought up in Belper both sides of my family come from around Melbourne way and this part of the world was a huge part of my childhood and youth and, to some extent, continues to be so. In this respect I have always been aware that there is 'another Derbyshire' south of Derby which rivals around Belper for scenery and I constantly find the wide sweep of the Trent Valley with all the power stations a breathtaking panorama viewed from some of the bluffs on the southern side of the vale. I was surprised that Calke Abbey was something so novel to you at the time of the walk and that takes me back to the many times I have been through there in my late Dad's car, even as an adult! I have a personal connection with the inasmuch as both sides of the family have worked on the Calke Estate, by the way. I also clearly remember a fascinating and memorable guided walk in which I once participated going through the old Lime Yards and around the old Military Railway and I wondered if you might have been going through there. Maybe the next time you are around there you might do so! Oh, finally, that video was shot at a very significant time for me, since the 12th March 2016 was on the weekend immediately following my first-ever holiday in Slovakia, about which you will read at 'Girls Of The Golden East'. I had returned home after a very eventful journey back by rail and ferry late on the 10th!

@@solitaryrambler You're welcome! Another possible branching-off you may have considered, it occurs to me, is if you'd have continued on to Woodhouses from Staunton Harold Reservoir, then - going in a slight kink - crossing the road to the entrance to Barehills then continuing around the Intake round the 'back' of Melbourne Pool. That's one of my favourite walks around Melbourne.

If you revisit this area Patrick, if you head down to Ingleby from Swarkestone bridge, Anchor Church is interesting a place of worship that was carved into a cliff, and right next to the river

As i mentioned yesterday this is the second time of watching your films , i think we discovered them around the holmfirth one ,but its lovely to sit and watch them again mate , Lee has heard of calke hall as she was based in coalville , leicestershire until we met ten years ago now , i really love the old green water pumps ,and the causeway - bridge at Swarkestone .... We have an old railway embankment in preston , whiich had fifty plus arch ways on it viaduct , they simply covered the archways with earth creating embankments ..... Once again well worth another look Patrick .... Regards Frank and Lee ....

Thanks Frank and Lee, especially for giving some of these films a second viewing. I don't think I've ever been to Coalville, but being based there would not be far from Calke Abbey and the park. Those green pumps are all over Ticknall, I wish I'd filmed more of them in hindsight. I regularly drive over Swarkestone Bridge when I'm out on site working, but very rarely get down that part of Derbyshire in my own time, which was why it was a nice change when making this video. Thanks again Frank and Lee. Cheers, Patrick :-)

Don’t know if you got a look at the monument in the beer garden at the Crewe and Harpur pub Patrick, but it’s the furthest point the Jacobite army of Bonnie Prince Charlie reached before returning to Scotland

I've just caught this film Patrick. It is always good to see the less obvious walking destinations. The info on Ted Moult was especially welcome,he was a great character from my youth.

Thanks for watching this Mike. Yes this was a less obvious place to walk, and I remember thinking at the time it would make a nice change to film in a different part of Derbyshire :)

Have never been to this part of Derbyshire,it looks quite flat and very different from the Peak District further north, most of my walking is done there,I don't even venture much into the White Peak,I love walking in the Dark Peak, the Abbey looked nice, the building and grounds it was set in looks exactly like Cannon Hall in Barnsley near me,for some reason there is a museum about the charge of the Light Brigade there. Ted Moult, that's a name from the past,as soon as you mentioned him I could visualise him in the double glazing adverts,I wondered if it was the same one as that seemed a strange thing for a farmer to adverise, but I think by then he had become something of a celebrity. Thanks for sharing Patrick, all the best. Pete.

I wanted to do just one film in Derbyshire that wasn't in the Peak District, so this was the result for the first film I shot in 2016. It was a work colleague who told me about Ted Moult's farm, so it was nice to mention that whilst shooting this. Calke Abbey is a great place to visit if you're interested in old houses. Thanks again Pete for watching and for commenting. Cheers, Patrick :)
