060924 BODY FOUND IN SUBMERGED VEHICLE IN LAKE CREEK 1

At 915am a bicyclist was riding down Honea Egypt over Lake Creek when he spotted a vehicle in the water. He called 911. Magnolia Fire responded along with DPS, MCSO, and Montgomery County Precinct 5 Constables. The vehicle was on its side just barely out of the water. With an alligator floating in the vicinity Magnolia Firefighters used caution as they entered the water. First having to make an easy way to get down the bank. Crews suited up in dry suits and then had to make their way through the deep water to the vehicle. Inside they found a male in the driver's seat. Milstead Heavy Duty was dispatched to the scene. With the help of firefighters, chains were connected and the vehicle was raised out of the water. Montgomery County Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace responded to the scene for the inquest. He ordered Eickenhorst Funeral Directors to transport the victim to the Montgomery County Forensic Center for autopsy. DPS Troopers were going to attempt to notify the family of the incident. It is unknown as whether the incident had recently happened or if it was from when Lake Creek flooded last month and the water level had just come down exposing the vehicle.

Driver's seat was intact with minor damage from what it looks like from this side of my screen. If he stayed conscious after the drop, he could have easily survived had he had manual roll-down windows. Unfortunately, he didn't. Crank windows need to make a comeback for this very reason.

The hammers won't work on the front windows of most newer cars, because like windshields the vast majority of them are laminated. But rear windows are usually tempered; so if end up in the water, jump in the back seat to try to break the window.

Bless the families involved and thank goodness for EPMS folks! Some sort of impairment likely played a role. Heart attack, stroke, alcohol, or just sleeping. I fell asleep behind the wheel in 1998 after working several 17 hour days in a row. I hit a mini in van with several older ladies in it and caused them injury. No one needed hospitalization, but it scared me straight.

Some of us are old enough to remember the horrific pictures of cars impaled by unburied guardrail ends, the steel rail crashing through the windshield an out the back, shredding the passengers. This is why we are not posting unresearched comments about the "evils of buried guardrail ends". My grandmother's life was saved when a sloped and buried guardrail left her safely teetering on top.

From the looks of the damage to this vehicle, the person struck something before rolling down the embankment. Flood waters would not do this. It’s possible this could have been a hit and run. Or he was driving at a high rate of speed crashing on the opposite side of the road then rolling down. However he lost his life, this is a sad ordeal. May he rest in peace and condolences 💐 to the family. Closure is something everyone needs in life, regardless of the circumstances.

I also come from a family of alcoholics on my Dad’s side and have seen it ruin the life of a cousin who was a really decent person but for his drinking. He wasn’t the only alcoholic, his Dad was too, but still my favorite uncle when he was sober. If you can’t see how that truck could end up like that, you are completely lacking in having the kind of imagination where you can see how a happened before b, even if you didn’t see a.
