As I recall, Dr. Walter Bynum, the former president of Morehouse College, addressed this issue over ten years ago. Specifically about the type of clothing considered appropriate for Morehouse men. It was a really big deal at the time and set some folks hair on fire (he received backlash over these comments for more than a year), but now we clearly see the resultant consequences of this form of expression. Like you, I'm an openly gay Black man in my 50's, consider myself to be a traditionally masculine man, who is also married to someone who identifies similarly. I enjoy the company of men who also enjoy being men. When I wanna hang with my girls, I do. I just can't do all the expressive flexibility that has come about with all these younglings today. Further, as you've suggested before, I'm seeing many who are now regretting some of the decisions that have been made as it's cost them relationships, jobs, and family. As always, thanks so much for sharing...

I wear unisex clothing but you know I’m male. Thank you Walter! Chicago gays don’t do this only unless it’s a drag show. We are comfortable in who we are without all that. It's really sad. Just look at how the gys represented themselves at the Beyonce Concert. Everything is feminine and over the top. They spend all this money to look like a women, just to live in the moment and miss out on what it is to be a responsible adult in Atlanta. The same ones in the clubs, toting them lil pocketbooks, saying they live in Atlanta, live 5 to an apartment in Riverdale, no car, and no other outlets outside of the gy scene. people ask me why it's hard for me to date in the A. This is why. I came here for school first, career, and now have a mortgage to a condo in the city (and I am attractive..lol). Back in the day (I'm 40), I remember it was so many guys that that had the life of accomplishments, success and taking care of themselves (physically and mentally). Dudes were Dudes in the old ATL.. What once was the normal for Atlanta gy dudes is no more (masculine, discreet and successful men). What we once knew is the minority and this new wave has become the majority. So so sad.

I personally detest the androgynous look that I've been seeing. I'd never want to look like that and am 100 percent unattracted to that look. However, I also realize that someone else's freedom to express themselves as they see fit is equal to my freedom to dislike said expression. My solution: Go to the places where I can indeed see and mingle with the type of people I do like; live and let live. I'm not self-righteous enough to think that the world should tailor itself to my aesthetic preferences. I just seek out spaces that comply with my preferences. How someone else presents is no reflection of me and vice versa. Interestingly, there are people who make the same argument against your sexual orientation that you're making against androgenous gay men; they don't think you should exist or that you should show up in the world as a same-gender-loving man. Additionally, you say that you were the oldest one in the club at 53, and I think that may be the other part of the problem. Each generation comes with its own "flavor" that's typically disliked by older generations. You're a Gen X'er, & your generation also did things that weren't favored by Baby Boomers and Silent Gens. Cultural norms shift from one generation to the next. Maybe that club visit was your sign that your season for patronizing spots of that nature should be over. If you enter a club and immediately realize that you're old enough to be the father of the majority of the patrons, that's probably your first hint that the place will be incompatible with your sensibilities. Why not just seek out spaces that attract mature, masculine crowds? You're in ATL, where there exists a variety of gay spaces for men of all types.

🖐🏾💢💢💢 Over the years it's been clear that masculine gym gays have been your personal type (younger verse btm, verse, vtp or top preferred). Fine. HOWEVER, ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT YOU DON'T EVER HAVE TO PUT YOUR NOSE UP IN THE AIR AT NOBODY JUST TO DESCRIBE WHAT YOU ACTUALLY LIKE ROMANTICALLY. I know the gays never taught that very well at all but it is 100% true. 💯💛

BS… @georgiabrother your thinking is the problem. I’m glad Walter is calling it out. This fem men culture is disgusting and it’s not looking down. It’s calling a spade a spade.. men dressing as women is a problem and no one wants to see that.
