Steroids can kill you as quickly as meth, crack and heroin. Jo Lindner just died at age 30. It is not straightforward to monitor your metrics and be a healthy bodybuilder on steroids. This lifestyle is not about optimal health and takes years off your lifespan and healthspan. This was a missed opportunity to have a more difficult and more honest conversation.

as a women who has dated a lot of body builders, you have missed the conversation about how roids ruin their hormones. ED was a major issue in some relationships I had. Also, one of them is having to take kidney medication due to kidney failure. Taking steroids isn't all fun and games. Its an addiction to the "look" of it all. You get a lot of women bc of it, you get attention bc of it- but it's superificial. It can create a lot of issues within your intimate relationships- the ones worth having. And most likely you will suffer an early death bc of it. I've had to rush my 34 year old ex to the ER for issues that stem from steroids. It's not a topic talked about enough. It's an addiction like anything else but isn't exposed in the same light as your typical alcohol/narcs. He's making light of it, as they all do, bc hes happy with his decision. But, once his over sized heart decides it's his last day here, it's lights out. He thinks bc he can go to the gym and lift a lot, that hes invincible- and that's an immature stance. Taking these drugs will eventually be the cause of an early death, as good as they have and will continue to make you feel. I have injected my ex and hes had to cough and stick his head in the freezer until it passes. What the hell is that? This interview didn't dive deep into the reality of steroids, it is promoting this drug to everyone without being real about the consequences of it.

I also got into lifting because it felt like everything in my life was going wrong and out of my control. I began to look and feel strong. I started to gain a sense of calm and confidence. It was (and still is 25 years later) a spiritual journey. People who think that bodybuilding is all about vanity (people like my father) do not understand that it goes much, much deeper than just wanting to achieve a certain appearance. Doug articulated that very very and I'm glad he did. Great interview.

I second this. Found the gym around 17, my dad who passed when I was young was into bodybuilding and competed so it was only a matter of time before I got into it myself. It’s the one thing truly within my grip and my full control. The feelings of confidence and the realization that I could make myself stronger through sheer effort was all I needed. Never been about looks, that’s a plus that comes with it, but the feeling of being able to walk in a door and do nothing but better yourself all on your own, by your own choosing is something most people can’t comprehend.

He just traded one drug addiction for another. Steroids are super dopaminergic drugs and will reck your health in myriads of ways. He obviously has a brain reward system issue (think adhd) and should have treated that instead of using aas. If this was a positive story, he would have stayed natural and went to a shrink to get a handle on his dopamine cravings, so to speak. We get a lot of ex drug addicts in the bb industry and the "bodybuilding saved my life" myth is oh so prevalent in the aas using crowd. But the sad truth is that aas are gene transcribing drugs which change your brain reward system for the long run, effectively making one more adhd and thus ending up reliant on said drugs, needing more and more or increasing the frequency of "cycling" which just end's up killing your body. So no, it's not a positive story, it's a story of somebody who is STIL FIGHTING HIS ADDICTIONS and not of somebody who has recovered from them. The aas crowd is one of the most delusional ones out there. It's par for the course of aas effects on cognition, lowering IQ.

Mark love all your interviews but you missed the mark on this one. Although he truly seems like a great guy who is very disciplined and turned his life around, let’s not romanticize the use of anabolic steroids. They are very dangerous. Your frame is not designed to carry that weight around which is evident from the need to use a CPAP. I certainly wish him well and hope that he realizes this & will stop the steroid use.

I had a teacher in highschool with the same birthday as me that told me he was a meth addict when he was a teen. Same thing, dude was in the gym everyday. It's like when you self destruct for so many years, you wanna learn how to improve yourself. Bodybuilding is probably one of the most stressful lifestyles anyone can lead long term. This guy said he's 35, though if I didn't know that I would guess that he's in his mid to late 40s. The human body gets pushed to it's limit living this way. The amount of calories needed to maintain his body, the amount of labour and physical strain one undergoes to build so much muscle. This on top of steroid usage can easily shorten anyone's lifespan, reduce quality of life in old age or flat out kill you. He seems like a good guy, I have nothing against what he's chosen to do I just hope he is taking care to tend to his longevity.

Interesting that the comment section is full of adulation for Doug without the mention of steroid use and it's seemingly widespread acceptance. This is not an admonishment of Doug and his recovery, nor the obvious amount of dedication and hard work he puts into his craft. He's obviously turned his life around for the better. He also seems like a genuinely good person, so I'm not judging. I'm just curious why steroid use is an afterthought of this interview? I've witnessed steroid use first hand by a family member. Particularly, the mood swings and roid rage, which were absolutely concerning to be around. The short term and long term psychological and physical affects of steroids are well documented. Doug even alludes to this. At 44, I've worked out religiously my entire life, a habit that I've passed along to my now college bound son. When I noticed him turning the corner and really taking body building seriously, I told him, "Do me a favor, never take steroids. Appreciate your body for what it is and what it's capable of. Avoid the temptation to create a synthetic version of yourself." Surprisingly, I find myself having to constantly re-assure him of this message. The gains of fellow classmates using steroids, the adulation of social media "fitness experts"/youtube personalities normalizing steroid use, and the rise of body dysmorphia are all contributing factors. Anyway, great interview, but the tone of admiration is a little concerning.

This guy reminds me of myself so much. I used to bodybuild, though never competitively. But i got extremely serious into it, and I was nearly his size. I'm 6'-4", and have been up to 325 bulking but only 250-260 when I was about as lean as he is. I can relate to everything he says about it. The drive, the challenge, the art, the addictive quality of it all...all so true. Detaching yourself from food and just eating purely to reach an end goal. Granted I probably started bodybuilding due more to childhood bullying, which wasn't his reason. But i never really got addicted to street drugs like he did either. But the gear? Absolutely i got into that. You have to in that world. Test, tren, dbol, designer steroids and pro hormones like superdrol...i loved it all. You feel like a monster on that stuff, especially tren. I pretty much quit all gear before i ever really got into cutting seriously though. I was in grad school, which always took top priority over bodybuilding. Now I'm so far off the rails that it's all a distant memory. I don't even workout anymore. I need to get back into it. Not the gear, just the training. The honesty in his answers resonates with me. As he described his reasons for bodybuilding, a mirror of my younger self began to form from 12-38 years old. Many times, the gym was all I had to look forward to. Great interview.

As a life long lifter this guy is a breath of fresh air! Honest and HUMBLE as most true BB'ers are! Weight lifters are some of the nicest guys you will ever meet! Weights are the ultimate discipline and out let for positive mental health for many many people! It is a shame many are too intimidated or just don't have the drive to exercise and resistance train! It can make you a better person in many ways!

To mark and Doug I read the comments and I agree this spoke to me as well ! I would say & agree mark with your other commenters please more of this style of interview! You’ve shown us the bad & ugly & some good , but this was really uplifting to see this kind of good! I take my hat off to you Doug for having the courage to share with us your entire story ! You didn’t have to mention anything about your drug an jail past and no one would have suspected otherwise. But you chose too and for that you have enlightened people’s minds on both sides of the spectrum and showed everyone how no matter how deep in the hole you are or how high up the commonwealth ladder you are at anytime things can go array to one direction or the other , so as you said & I agree absolutely that maintaining that schedule & regimen & daily balance is key to long term success in life and all our endeavors so thank you for inspiration ! And to mark, where to start you’ve shown me so much of different things that are out there where to a point I can in a way relate to each individual experience! I can’t explain the gratitude I have towards you mark for helping me understand some of my personal demons in which I believe everyone has them in one way or the other but also more importantly I sincerely thank you for the knowledge and an avenue in a way to deal with certain things ! Every day is a struggle but you have to keep moving forward trying your best and staying positive so again, Mark thank you !

Hey bro, love you and continue on your journey. I understand what you went through as a kid and I can understand what you’re going through as an adult. If you have not done, so, please please see a cardiologist, the drugs that you mentioned cause people to have enlarged hearts and weakened aortas. As a bodybuilder, you are absolutely putting more and more stress on your heart pleaseplease see a cardiologist. Make sure that your heart is in good condition. You’re most likely going to have an athlete heart which is an enlarged heart, but it should be healthy. I wish you a good journey, my friend.
