TOOL TALK #3 - If you have already upgraded your TL866CS firmware to the A version then you now need to install an ICSP (In-circuit Serial Programming) header. It's as easy as 1... 2... hey wait a minute!
If you missed "Part 1: Upgrading the TL866 Firmware" you can watch it here, • #07 "Prest-O Change-O"... .

***NOTE - February 2018 - there is a new TL866 IC programmer available, the "TL866II Plus" with ICSP header as standard, NAND flash support, VCC voltage range 1.8V-6.5V, pin detection and more. I would recommend purchasing this new model - they are selling on eBay (ebay.to/2DSk536) and AliExpress (s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_Deu....

thank you for posting. the definitive 'square peg in a round hole' problem. perhaps 'round' the pins a bit w/ a short length of 'just barely fits' brass tubing [from local hobby shop], chucked in a dremel tool or drill motor, w/ a tiny dab of tooth paste for abrasion. take care & stay safe.

"Beauty!" That a Dave Jones reference?!? Great video! I just ordered a A model and kicking myself for it. Oooh well.

Thanks for watching and commenting. I'm glad you like the video. I would have purchased an A model as well, but at the time it was considerably more expensive. "Beauty" - yes - I suppose that was a bit of a nod to Dave's influence, although it is a bit of a Canadianism too. :)

Very nice and informative video as usual. I feel a lot more confident now to finally fully convert my TL866, too. Thanks for the detailed and humorous tutorial. (Still smiling about that screwdriver scene.) :)

Ha. Thanks. Yeah, that sounds effect was pushing the cheesiness factor for me, but it made me laugh, so I left it in.

btw, did you do the blinky project as shown on Julian's video series on the pic ? :)

Hmm. I replied to you from my phone but it's not showing here. Anyway, no, I haven't tried Julian Ilett's blinky LED project yet. I have been busy lately (and procrastinating a bit, too).

Thanks! I just used regular right-angle pin headers with some pre-made -KK- *DuPont* pin jumper wires. Two braids and a couple zip ties to keep the wires tidy and now we have a flexible header. Took seconds! Subscribed.
@MindFlareRetro
@MindFlareRetro 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, the I was going to do the same with a regular right-angle pin header but I ended up on a mission to make it as A-series as possible. Did you have to file down the pins to fit through the PCB? Oh, and thanks for the sub!
@emmettturner9452
@emmettturner9452 6 жыл бұрын
MindFlareRetro No fitment issue but they stand a bit high off the board. Longer DuPont socket headers may contact the housing, but these didn't. Oh, made a correction: I used DuPont pins, not KK pins.

Great mod and upgrade! I want to get one of those solder sucker vacuum things! Perifractic has one!
@MindFlareRetro

The HAKKO desoldering gun is pretty good and very useful, but also quite expensive. If I was in the market to buy one now I would opt for the generic brand ZD-915 model -- ebay.to/31z1CFc -- separate vacuum pump base (i.e. better suction) and less than half the price. This is the model Jan Beta and other overseas (I'm assuming you are in the US) retro computer repair people use.

Thanks very much for your time. I always thought there was more to it than that with regards to the hardware (more SMD components needed). In my case I was a bit lucky as my TL866 has got the ICSP port pins fitted-in already. Hope I'll be lucky just as well upon installing the firmware fingers crossed! Not sure what ICSP is used for but am willing to learn.

Thanks for commenting. I'm happy that you enjoyed the video. It sounds like you already had a TL866A if it had the ICSP header. Did you purchase a CS or A model?

Oh my... now I figured it out! On the box there is written TL866. But then nearby there's a sticker stating TL866A Black (probably because it uses a black ZIF socket). I now also checked the label at the bottom of programmer and unknowingly I now found it is a TL866A. I guess I got mixed up when using the 6.60ver software it showed it was a TL866 in the 'About' menu when upgrading it from an earlier version. But the ICSP option was always faded and couldn't be ticked. It came with the ICSP header. Now upgrading to 6.70ver software made it show TL866A and I could now check (tick) the ICSP option.
@MindFlareRetro
@MindFlareRetro 6 жыл бұрын
Oh, interesting. So you have the black ZIF version. That's supposed to be a much higher quality socket...nice! And now I notice that a new version of the TL866 is being sold. the "TL866II Plus" with some added features for burning NAND flash and other small feature enhancements, ebay.to/2DSk536. Anyway, thanks for the update. I'm happy to hear you got it sorted out.

Cool mod. I had received a TL866II+ from China, which turned out to be a TL866CS. I have bought too cheap (again). Well, I have finally received a refund. Anyways, now I have a CS and would like to turn it into an A :-) Not that I really need it, but since it is possible, I need to do it. Excellent advice!

Thanks again for your positive comments. The process is fairly simple, however, I would recommend that you first review the current updates on the AtariAge.com forum (bit.ly/2HgXHWy) to make sure the process hasn't changed since i first posted this video. Have fun!

Hi, new sub here. What does the ICSP update bring in for programming support? I am aware that ICSP is the system for PIC programming, not aware of other devices that use the same system... can the programmer then be used as a PIC programmer? Just curious... Cheers, - Eddy
@MindFlareRetro
@MindFlareRetro 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Eddy. Thanks very much for subbing; your support is greatly appreciated. Yes, the ICSP header is commonly used for PIC programming, which is why I wanted it -- I was following Julian Ilett's _Introduction_ _to_ _PIC_ _Programming_ series. But, Arduino (ATMEL) hardware can be programmed via ICSP, as well -- although, I have not tried this with the TL-866. In fact, I had labelled the ICSP port on my TL-866 after this video with PIC and ATMEL pinouts -- see picture in this tweet, twitter.com/MindFlareRetro/status/991384868184616961. Thanks agiain for subbing and for your comment.

Hi. Thanks for commenting. I am not sure about KBC programming, specifically. But the TL-866 should be able to program any compatible IC using standard serial inputs/outputs. Here is a picture that might help, j.mp/2DqdY9A.

The company does not support its previous products. They will orphan you in a heartbeat just to sell you another burner. I bought the TL866CS and was orphaned four months later when they dropped all support for it, including dropping it from later revisions of their programming software. So I'm stuck at revision 6.85 forever. Thanks for nothing.
