Can't you just add a 5V zener to the main PCB? Does this also affect C64C's? That one does seem to have a rectifier and voltage regulator on board.

Hi. I do not know off-hand, however, you can search the programmer IC support lists on the manufacturer's website. There are links at the very bottom of the page on the right side, www.xgecu.com/en/ -- look for *TL866II* *Plus* *IC* *Support* *List* and *T48* *Plus* *IC* *Support* *List* .

This video is hilarious to me because I have been using this thing for so many years, it's held up great. I always unplug after use though because I don't trust any of this cheap, chinese crap so maybe that's why. I never had to open it either. It was used for SMD rework no problem, I eventually purchased more name brand solutions, but came back to using this thing because it was so consistent, just a workhorse. The $30 I paid on eBay made me a lot more than I invested for sure. Thank you random chinese assembly line worker!

Where's Part 2? The CoCo 2 was my first home computer. It was pretty primitive and obsolete by the time I got mine, so I don't think I appreciated it very much as a kid. But it was a computer in my home in the '80s, and that had to count for something.

Another note about RoHS compliance: Do you expect to put your C64 in a dump? Because that's what RoHS is for. Lead-free processes expose the operator to more toxic materials so that when careless end-users throw out their work it doesn't poison the environment. Use lead-free solder, sure, but consider the reasons why and the ultimate benefit your decision will yield. Electronics can and should be recycled, and there are other environmental costs to producing new materials.
@MindFlareRetro
@MindFlareRetro Жыл бұрын
Totally agree. I would never discard a retro computer hardware, or any electronics, to landfill. I mostly hang on to stuff like that, or drop off top an e-waste facility as a last resort.
@stickyfox

About "complex and expensive" when it comes to logic analyzers.... that is no longer the case. A Pi Pico costs $5 and outperforms any digital analyzer that would have been available to the C64's designers in the 70s. And can probably even serve as PLA while doing so... maybe not for Super Zaxxon tho.

Hi Mr so many people are screen protector plastic take out trow away why protector is screen protect or damage please answer to me TQ
@MindFlareRetro
@MindFlareRetro Жыл бұрын
Hi. Thanks for your question. I believe the protective film that is on the screen when you first open the box is there primarily to protect the screen during manufacturing and shipping and it is intended to be removed before use. It is not the clearest film and has a few bubbles trapped under it, so it might be the best "screen protector". You certainly could leave it in place if it doesn't bother you, or I suppose you could cut a true screen protector meant for a mobile phone to fit the meter's screen.

First time discovering your channel and video, from Robin Show & Tell. I just downloaded the MasterRom file to my PC, for a future Commodore 64 build I would like to do someday. As far as I know, I might be the first or very few people in the USA to have this MasterROM; especially in Kentucky USA! Looking forward to loading the ROM's into my next Commodore 64 build and experience it first hand! Initially I was going to build my own C64C computer completely from scratch, with a parts kit, new motherboard, chips, case, etc. Unfortunately, that would quickly run way out of my price range. So I found an alternative DIY Commodore build I can still do for half the cost; but still quite expensive locating all the custom chips and shipping costs from Europe. But will see how it all goes once I have the money for it. I would guess Commodore themselves never knew about the MasterROM Kernel released back then. The developer being so obscure in the deep wooded cold frontier of the Great White North eh! 😃👍

Hey Chris. Happy to hear that you found my channel and this MasterROM video. Yes, it's a pretty obscure piece of C64 history. I hope you manage to get your DIY Commodore 64 build happening soon than later. It would be cool to see MasterROM running on it. Keep me posted.

@@MindFlareRetro thank you for your kind words! It’s definitely a special project I would like to assemble sometime. Have my very own brand new C64C with mostly old custom chips! Loads of original games and music through the physical hardware; not emulated. Unfortunately, it will run a good $300-400+ for everything including shipping. But if it eventually happens, I’ll let you know! Maybe I might make a video of it on my channel. 🙂

Hello, I would like to ask, I am making a PCBs and I am interested if it is possible to use this multimeter to measure capacitors from 100 pF to micro, resistances from 1K to 1M and if this multimeter will not destroy my board where all the components are very sensitive, for example SHTC sensor max 1.8V. Overall, I'm wondering if it's possible to use this multimeter on smt PCB, it doesn't have to be that accurat. Thank you.
@MindFlareRetro
@MindFlareRetro Жыл бұрын
Hi. Well, in my opinion any multimeter, if used properly, should not damage any components, even humidity and temperature sensors. This meter can measure all common components with varying of degrees of accuracy. The full specs are available on the manufacturer's website, www.gvda-instrument.com/electronic-instruments/digital-multimeter/digital-multimeter-9999-counts-for-automotive.html. I hope this helps.

the "fun" part of removing the keys became breaking a piece... no need to remove keys for a cleaning that you can do with the help of a little alcohol and a small brush. You can clean the metal contacts with liquid for polishing metals and a cotton swab, and clean the conductive rubber that makes contact with a cotton swab and alcohol.

How can one detect when the lever of the zif socket is closed?
@MindFlareRetro
@MindFlareRetro Жыл бұрын
You can feel increasing spring tension resistance as you lower the lever. There is a small but feelable "dull snap" (for lack of a better description) just before the lever is parallel with the surface of the socket. This is most apparent with higher quality name-brand ZIF sockets.

Hm, no way i can insert these cheap ZIF sockets to the C64C's IC holes... although there is no any solder residue in them (using a vacuum desoldering station), the ZIF's legs are just to big/wide. Any idea? I'm thinking of file the ZIF legs to make them smaller, but this can expose the legs to faster corrosion maybe... don't know what to do.
@MindFlareRetro

@plinker439 Жыл бұрын
@@MindFlareRetro Meanwhile i watched a video where the author just twisted all the legs of the ZIF by 90 degrees so it could be inserted into a normal socket (not the precision/machined ones) then this socket can be soldered into the board. I think i will follow that way. (: It would be hard to file all the legs evenly, also can damage them easily.

Impression that the package got hot enough to loosen the hot glue and also mess with the solder joints on the boards a little. If it takes a hot iron to loosen the PI in the previous build video, it seems likely that it could have gotten pretty hot during shipping.
