As I mentioned a few episodes back, I've gotten in the habit of reading the comments first, so that when you talk about things in the video, I'm somewhat prepared, and my mind can go to other thoughts. This is the best Beach Boys 'watering hole" I've ever seen or been part of, and we have you to thank, Steve! Great job!

I was certainly *not* expecting that shout out, thank you so much!! :-) The way you integrate your community into this wonderful channel is very unique, I haven‘t seen anything like it. LOVE how you compared the different issues and track lengths - it’s always great (and a relief!) to see others are equally obsessed. I’m really looking forward to 1971 and „Surf‘s Up“, one my big favorites. Again, thank you for your passionate dedication and the continuing fresh ideas.

Thanks for the mention Steve. I found your channel when you first started. It got me through the darkest days of pandemic and social unrest when there was often nowhere to go for politics-free entertainment. It’s been fun to offer little contributions. The wealth of stories and topics you’ve come up with is incredible. One quirky beach boys story seems to inspire another and I get the sense you’re nowhere close to running out of ideas. And think about this: you’ve done all these fascinating episodes without really delving into the infamous scandals, tragic deaths, Eugene Landy soap opera, or the band’s internecine warfare. There’s certainly some fertile ground for an episode or two there.

I've definitely enjoyed and appreciated your comments and participation from the beginning, Bea! You've definitely been a "stalwart" here and your input is always a highlight! When I started, I figured there was probably enough for maybe 400 episodes. With all the great feedback suggesting more topics, and leading me into topics I never knew existed, I'm really starting to feel like the channel is a "conversation" that could go on as long as we'd all like. Thanks for all the support and good words, Bea! It truly means a lot to me!

I think Steve must be saving the dirty laundry and fireworks stories for later, when the ordinary stuff starts to dry up, or readers start to lose interest. I hope that day never comes.

Nice to see a CD of Elvis Costello's "Imperial Bedroom," because it was a review of this album that got me into "Pet Sounds." In the Oct. 1982 issue of Trouser Press, the magazine's best review writer, Scott Isler, called it an "album of brilliant compositions that eluded the public upon its release." This was a major endorsement for me. When I eventually tracked down "Pet Sounds" (which took months) it did not disappoint.

Very cool to know that "Imperial Bedroom" brought you to "Pet Sounds." I must have read that issue of Trouser Press too! That quote is familiar. (Maybe it has been reprinted somewhere.) The release of "Imperial Bedroom" was highly anticipated by me and my friends in the early summer of '82. (It had been a while since we'd had any new EC songs.) I used it here as part of my "house" background theme. Thanks for the comments, Tony!

I enjoy the pop culture dives. While I liked The Beach Boys when I was a kid, I didn’t really develop my deep appreciation for them until much later in my life, so for me, their music exists out of time. Your pop culture episodes give me that missing piece that helps me appreciate their music that much more. Thanks!

Thanks! My experience of The Beach Boys was largely the same. I was aware of the releases from "Endless Summer" on but didn't really start listening seriously until 1980 so most of it, for me too, exists out of time. I hope you'll enjoy the 1971 dive! There was SO much going on, I really thought it was good to take it a little slower and go deep. Hope you'll let me know what you think! Thanks, Nick!

@@tonys9102 Excellent point, Tony! Over the nearly three years I've been doing the channel, I've heard from several BB fans in their 30s and younger who also discovered the Beach Boys via hearing their music used in commercials. (Those appearances on "Full House" also helped bring in a new generation, from what I've heard in comments.) Thanks for mentioning "Wouldn't It Be Nice" was "missing" from "Endless Summer." I know now that it was because Warner/Reprise controlled the "post-65" material at the time. In the 70s, not having "Wouldn't It Be Nice" and "Good Vibrations" on the set encouraged me to buy BB records beyond "Endless Summer," so there was a positive effect there too. (You know, I think I'm going to pose the question, "How did you find the Beach Boys?" on the channel. It could be very interesting!) Thanks, as always, for the excellent thoughts and insights, Tony!

Hey Steve, thanks for the the mention! I'm glad to ear you'll talk about 1971 for quite a few episodes, I'm a fan of the 70s and the beach boys works at that time too. Also this probably means that you'll be taking enough time to tell us a bit about Two Lane Blacktop which came out in that year. I was dumbfounded when I found out Dennis played in a movie whilst browsing my Dad's DVDs in the early 2000. Again, thanks for the great video and this cool comment section! As you said, loads of intersting stuff here and fellow BB fans ;)

Hi Kenny! Thanks for the good words and for the "vote of confidence" on a 1971 deep dive! I've started working on it and it's kind of unbelievable how much great music came out that year. The early 70s are also my favorite Beach Boys era. "Two Lane Blacktop" will definitely come up. I did a full episode on the film a while back, so I'll try not to repeat too much from that episode. Great to hear from you, Kenny!

@@thebeachboysbasementwithst6444 A few more to check out: A couple of twin sisters (I think from an East Europe country) who bill themselves as the Mona Lisa Twins. They have several KZbin videos. They cover the Beatles, Rolling Stones and I know they covered "God Only Knows". They, with their back-up band, do a killer version of the Rolling Stones' "The Last Time" performing in some Club. There's also a couple of sisters from Oklahoma, with several older KZbin videos (from 10-12 years back, which are still up on KZbin). They bill themselves as Ashley & Emma, and have a very nice version of the Beach Boys' "Forever".

Hi Steve, I too really enjoy the comment section as there is so much information to be found there and also i sometimes have replies to the comments i have made and its nice to talk with fellow BB fans, particularly as a lot of info about the group is often very different here in UK compared to the states and its great that you are to feature so much about 1971, because even in the most knowledgeable books i have, the period 1970 to 1973 seems to be passed by with little info as to what was going on and Blondie and Ricky are hardly mentioned which i find unacceptable as to me, they changed the groups sound completely and made them more contempory for that time and indeed, if you look at some of the CD album notes, you will see quotes from many established musicians that quote this as the groups finest period , Elton John springs to mind here and i think he mentions this on Carl and the Passions album. I do remember that there was The Beach Boys Story which i`m pretty sure was broadcast over several weeks around 1972 on BBC Radio 1 with Bob Harris a well known BB fan. Also nothing much about the departure of Bruce which i find irritating, as he was so much a part of the group and was missed , although as he once said, he did make contributions to all of their albums up until he rejoined and had remained friends with the group throughout. and i gather he was now residing in London, this would have been around 1979 when i heard this.. Great vid Steve, Regards from UK.

Hi chris! It's been great for me to get the UK perspective through the comments too (with you, of course, being a major, excellent, source of info!) I'm really gaining an appreciation of just how different (and better in a lot of ways) the Beach Boys "experience" has been in the UK! I totally agree about Blondie and Ricky getting short shrift in Beach Boys bios. I'd love to see a good "Flames" bio sometime with the early 70s period presented from Blondie and Ricky's point of view. I hadn't considered it before, but you're definitely right about Bruce's departure being glossed over too! I guess I suspected it was "bad blood" between Jack Reilly and Bruce and that both probably felt, "The less said, the better." Still, Bruce had been a full member for most of their career and a major contributor. His departure was an important development and definitely deserves more attention! Great to hear from you, chris! Your input is always excellent and much appreciated!

Yes, Chris, it was broadcast here in the US around that time. I taped it on several 7" reels and still have them, though why fuss with all that when you can "dial it up" right here on KZbin in less than 5 minutes?

That is a great version of Big Sur! It's really hard to believe that it took fifty years for it to get an official release! That track listing thing is definitely frustrating...especially as, in all seriousness, a fan needs a spreadsheet to figure out what's what. In the ongoing album-art-with-illustrations-for-each-track category: Rod Stewart's 1971 "Every Picture Tells a Story" has mock sheet music graphics for each song on the back cover. The art direction is by Desmond Strobel who did many covers including Fleetwood Mac Rumours. This is one of my favorite albums because of Micky Waller's drumming. (I tried to include link to the album cover, but KZbin ain't buying it.)

Good call! I just pulled out my copy of "Every Picture Tells A Story" and checked it out. Funny, I just had it out to shoot one of the "1971" episodes I've been working on but didn't bother opening up the flap on the cover! (It definitely makes sense that this album would have a picture for every song!) Great cover too! I also love Mick Waller's drumming, especially on the title track! Thanks for pointing it out and for the comments, Jeff!

I bought all versions of Feel Flows to show my support and also noticed some discrepancies between the sets (and I learned more after watching this video). I noticed the mix of Cotton Fields on the vinyl sets does not have the count-off at the beginning. Also, Cotton Fields is labeled as the 2021 mix on the CD set but it says 2020 mix on the vinyl set. Another thing is I'm Goin' Your Way is different on Feel Flows compared to the (superior, in my opinion) version on the "Beach Boys 1969: I'm Goin' Your Way" EP that was on streaming services for a very short time. Here's a link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qnallqZjhruZsMU Nonetheless, I am happy these sets were released and I really enjoy having all these unreleased/rare tracks on CD and especially love that there on vinyl too! Also, when you mentioned DJ L33 at 15:42 his channel got taken down via copyright strikes. He is working to get it back. I'm sure if you reach out to him on Facebook, he'll give you more details. He posted about it in his Facebook group when it happened. He is back on a 2nd channel until further notice. Here's the link: kzbin.info/door/9VfZCI3hN-8UGxkdeKINzQ

Thanks for the additional info on the box set! I wonder if the Cotton Fields "2021 mix" and "2020 mix" is a typo or if they're different mixes. It was mentioned that there are different mixes on different sets but I haven't looked into it. (I fear that, one of these days, we're going to start getting everything remixed annually!) I agree that the earlier version of "I'm Going Your Way" is superior. I didn't realize it was no longer available! In that case, it's really a shame it wasn't included in the box set! Thanks for the info on DJL33! (I was afraid it was something like that!) Thanks for the suggestion on reaching him via Facebook! I'm going to try that! Always a pleasure to hear from you, Vince!
