I love looking back on early colour transmissions, they really turned it up to 11 on the controls! I guess they did this to show how vivid this new technology was in their Granada rental shops!!

They had problems with certain colours not registering properly. This meant interesting choices of colour as well as often quite limited options. If you watch the old ITC series, notice how many times you see the same colour green on the walls as in the women's ward here.

The first four colour episodes where test transmissions so almost no one saw this episode or the next three episodes in colour at the time. Those four episodes (the first four episodes of the month of November 1969) were actually scheduled to be transmitted in black and white monochrome but the ITA was running test transmissions in colour on different frequencies to make the necessary adjustments for the first advertised colour episode (17 November 1969), but if viewers happen to retune their television sets, they may of stumbled across the colour feed even though those particular episodes received no real advertisement as being in colour.

@@blue_cec2625 Yep, its all down to the rapid output of these shows and the fact they weren't quite ready with colour film processes, but were on target with the colour video. It was always way cheaper to do outside footage (including the title sequences) on film rather than videotape. Videotape was a very new innovation but only cost-effective to use in the studio (a roll of videotape was the same price as a motorcar, at that time).
@TheGramophoneGirl
@TheGramophoneGirl 4 жыл бұрын
It was the first recording in colour but wasn't actually transmitted in colour due to the official switch on 2 weeks later on 15/11/69 - hence the titles still being the old b&w ones. I think it was to allow them a chance to get the colour settings right etc. Amazing that it survives at all considering the cost of video tape back then, and that it will never have been repeated. Still, cool to see it and the colour adds a realism that B&w didn't seem to. (all before my time though :) )

It is weird seeing the outdoor shots in black and white and the studio shots in colour, I wonder how many other programmes had partially colour episodes around this time?
@joannegray5138
@joannegray5138 5 жыл бұрын
Most people still had black and white tellies - because colour sets were rather expensive - so there weren't many colour viewers to remark on this. A typical ad break was a mixture of colour and black and white too.
@communityrags6048
@communityrags6048 4 жыл бұрын
The story (from memory) is that the so-called outside broadcasts (OBs) were always cheaper to do on film, and studio on video. So they were two entirely separate processes. This programme was churned out non-stop and they attempted to coincide the transfer to colour with the outside filming and studio videotaping at the same episode. However, they weren't quite ready in time with the OBs, so there was a lag for an episode or two with outside shots. I guess they could have put the video out in black-and-white to match the film, but decided to stick with as much colour as possible. So its a case of accident rather than design, and this kind of thing is more likely to have happened in this kind of series (don't know of any other case).

We rented our first colour TV in 1969 from Radio Rentals. All of our neighbours would come over to watch this amazing new technology.

It was a test transmission before they launched full colour service on the 15th of November. This was transmitted in black and white when it aired on the standard frequency.

ITV didn't start broadcasting in colour for another fortnight, so no one would've seen it anyway, hence the outdoor shots are still in B&W :)

Yes, "officially" however ITV was broadcasting on UHF in colour months before the launch date. If you see the "Frost on Saturday" from 15/11/69, Frostie actually mentions this in passing during his intro. Also, if you had a UHF telly back then, even in black and white, you benefitted from the higher definition, and they didn't show any commercials, just a testcard for two minutes during the ad break. So, this episode of corrie almost definitely was broadcast in colour, depending if your local UHF transmitter was up and running. This info was from my late father who worked with what was then known as the ITA.

There is so much to unpack with this episode. Not least the horrible coloured bed sheets in the hospital and Hilda's coat clashing with the nurses' uniforms. The miraculous appearances of a bottle of brandy on the bar in the Rovers and a telephone! VERY convenient. Mind you it was the advent years of LSD. Lol.

Strange.. ITV was not formed until 1955. It is correct that the first colour TV tests were performed at Alexandra Palace in 1932 by the BBC and other agencies, and if not for WW2 colour TV would have been introduced much earlier.
