Flying a drone over and visiting Dyersville, Iowa's Basilica of St. Francis Xavier.
You will benefit from wearing headphones today. And you might learn some new words as well!
Ten families numbering 42 people left their native Bavaria in 1845 and made it to St. Louis before taking a boat up the Mississippi River and landing in Dubuque. They transferred their belongings onto covered wagons drawn by oxen and began traveling west. After only about 25 miles, they discovered fine farmland near another German settlement called New Vienna and settled land a few miles south.
Shortly thereafter, in 1847, 26-year-old James Dyer, from Somersetshire, England arrived and, as a man of means, began building among the Bavarians. Dyer was followed by friends and family and they settled in the new town that was springing up in the farmland. The town was beginning to be called Dyersville as early as 1849. Waves of economic depression caused the English to sell their land to the Germans who founded the first parish by 1859.
The first St. Francis Xavier Church was completed in 1862 but the parish grew quickly and the church had to be doubled in size by 1869. By 1880, it became clear that the current church building would no longer be adequate.
A new church building program was begun in the mid-1880s and the new building would be the Ruskinian Gothic Revival style church we see today.
Construction began in 1887 and the new church was dedicated on December 3, 1889. Special trains brought people from all over the state of Iowa to witness the dedication ceremony of the beautiful new cathedral.
The cost to build the new cathedral was approximately $100,000. Electric lights were added in 1904.
A push to elevate the church to a basilica began in the 1940s. In order for it to become a basilica, the church first had to be consecrated which meant it could never be used for any other purpose. In order for it to be consecrated, the church had to attain and maintain debt-free status.
With these requirements met, and the addition of the tintinnabulum, umbraculum and display of the papal symbol, St. Francis Xavier, in 1956, became the 12th church to be elevated to the rank of a minor Basillica in the U.S.
An addition was made to the south side of the Basilica in 1989 which contains a handicapped elevator, restrooms and access to the basement of the Basilica.
The two steeples are 212 feet (65 m) tall and are capped with 14 feet (4.3 m) crosses. This helped make the church visible from miles away across the rolling, lightly forested farmland.
The wood used for the altars and 52 foot high Baldacchino is butternut also known as white walnut. The high altar is made of carved Italian marble.
In 1971, a new 27-rank organ was installed that replaced the Basilica's original 1913 pipe organ but shortly thereafter, lightning struck the church and damaged the instrument’s electrical system.
In 2019, a million dollar renovation project began. The organ was rebuilt and expanded with new facades of pipes and a fiber optic system which is much more resistant to electrical issues than the older organ.
The church is in beautiful condition and is open for visitors throughout the day.
Today, Dyersville, Iowa, may now be better known for baseball and the “Field of Dreams” movie site, but this growing town of almost 4500 in eastern Iowa retains its farming heritage and rich history.
This big church in a small town is well worth traveling off the beaten path to visit.
