As I *think* I know this already, this is definitely the series for me - the complexity of modern networking is easy to underestimate

I'm super excited for this series! At this point I know a hobby level amount about this, but I'm afraid it's that dangerous area where you can get yourself into trouble without realizing it. System administration seems like one of those fields where it's easy to not realize when you have something configured badly
@Sticky1254 Жыл бұрын
Even as a sysadmin who's been at this for almost a decade now, networking becomes a black hole REALLY quick. Especially when you start getting into WAN engineering. Want a rabbit hole? Look at BGP and how ASs actually speak to eachother as well as how absolutely insecure it is. Super cool, but very intimidating. I have insane respect for veteran network guys.

Never used the ISP crap, and I thought I was doing fine with aftermarket consumer grade equipment, but I just built my own router since I was sick of the consumer level trash. Even the nicer consumer stuff can still be obsoleted due to firmware updates. Even though it was expensive, building my own "kinda' overkill" router with two of the Unify AP's I bought, cost me about as much as two higher end Asus routers I was looking at. I have a friend and a family member that use Google mesh and tell me it's fine, but I that stuff is the worst considering they report back to Google everywhere you go. Really can't wait to see where this series goes.

thank you guys for this series. my friend had taught me that "networking" is a broad word so it's nice to know your specifically talking about internet networking. i have always wanted to learn more on this subject so i can one day set up a better system then just using isp modem. i play destiny and it was mission impossible to learn how to properly portforward just to get an up NAT for my ps4(and xbox 360). before this i was always getting connection issues and almost stop playing the game. playing COD with my cousins, we had always had trouble with one of us having a closed NAT type but we could never figure out how to solve this issue. this is something that is never told and my isp wouldn't provide any assistance. COD does provide some kind of help buy stating what ports to forward but that was about it and that doesn't help at all for a average user.

I could have used this when I was a cable technician with all the speed issue trouble calls I had to deal with. I had to often explain that a $99 all in one gateway doing 4 different things wouldn't always suit their needs and that they would have to continue their networking journey past their ISPs equipment. Especially when the gateways only fed 2.4ghz.
@Hepheastius Жыл бұрын
I actually had people saying that they were going to pursue lawsuits because it was false advertisement. I had to tell them that our responsibility ended at the back of the modem, the Wifi was essentially a courtesy (at the time).

@@TechManTY. Definely, and that's what I told all the customers. It's difficult to explain this to people who wouldn't know how to feed themselves if their mouths didnt move so much, much less be an admin to their own network. To most people, computers are boxes of magic and wifi should just work with no effort on their end to learn or put work into it.

For an 099 Networking, a basic Gbit switch is fine. A lot of streaming devices like FireTVs (if they are even connected with a cable), run 100Mbit. A lot of the audience here will probably also have a bit of overkill networking at home. In my house I need easily 8 APs, mainly due to the concrete, columns and 2 floors. It is not a large property compared to typical US ones though. The hardest thing is to get the ISP to put the their modem into bridge mode. Looking forward to the series, hopefully I can send some of my less-techy friends and family in the direction of this series, so they gain a bit more understanding :)

In Germany you can get decent Router/Modems from some ISPs, but I always advise to calculate how much it will cost you like for two years, depending on how long you want to use it, might be a lot cheaper to buy it, even at your local eletronnics store.

No doubt you’re going to recommend pfsense/opnsense on an old server or possibly a new build. I had this and ultimately the small amount of features I used could be done on an off the shelf router which uses much less power. For most of your target audience save them some time and money and just recommend a new modem and a good WiFi/Router combo.

Spectrum in central Florida forces you to use that garbage router with their 'business' internet. It essentially breaks IPv6 for your own stuff without getting weird with it. Even if you put their garbage router into bypass mode it still takes the initial IPv6 address and only gives out a single /64 prefix delegation for you to use. I guess they expect you to bridge your LAN to the WAN for IPv6. Same exact service, but without their mandatory garbage router, and IPv6 works just fine. If you remove their garbage router and connect to the modem directly they will administratively down the modem after a few hours until their garbage router is plugged back in. And this is just part of why IPv6 adoption still sucks.
