Like alot of people Jane was looking for something from her father that he didn't have to give. He didn't have it in him. Children have expectations of parents that can't be met. When one reaches a certain age it is time to quit putting the burden of empty childhood voids onto other people and start taking care of those empty emotions for oneself. Only you can fill up YOU.

Jane does the best imitation of Hepburn. What she doesn't say here is her own mother committed suicide while she was very young. So she grew up without much parental presence or guidance in her life. Finally getting to work with her famous father before he died gave Jane some closure.

The one thing I believe Jane wanted from her father is AFFIRMATION. As you say sometimes they (parents) don't know or how to provide it to their children. I know when the time came for my mother - who wanted to tell me something .. she said, I wasn't a good mom - ALL I could say.. you did the very best you could.

You know, I disagree. Fonda was so raw in his performance and Hepburn was so human with hers. To have to give it to someone else would have been a mistake. Truely merited achievements on both their parts. If you want to talk about lifetime achievement awards not based on performance, Meryl's Iron Lady qualifies, and she didn't even deserve that one.

I liked her interview with TCM host, Robert Osborne, much better regarding "On Golden Pond". Jane was more honest stating that Hepburn was a very competitive personality and that she and her father, Henry, never really reconciled during the filming of the movie. Giving Oscars to Henry and Kate for their creaky performances (really, lifetime achievement nods) in this movie diminishes others who have won the honor for merit.

The more you listen to Jane, the more you realize she is passive/aggressive. I've heard her praise (and rip, and make fun of) Hepburn in several interviews. And, Jane loves to praise herself. I don't think people should said bad things about dead people (unless they are like Hitler). AND, for some reason, I don't believe anything that Jane says.

Jane had tried to apologize for some of her actions, in particular sitting on the anti-aircraft gun in North Vietnam with the N Vietnamese army, a gun that most likely brought down American aircraft and American soldiers and was continuing to be used to do so. For the American families who had lost loved ones or had family members actively fighting in the war and Americans in the military who had lost comrades, were still fighting in the war, or were captured by the enemy, it was understandable that many saw her as a traitor. She was not the only actor the go to N Korea, btw but she gave them a lot of powerful propaganda. I can only imagine what she was going through as Henry Fonda daughter. Many WWII Veterans movie stars became Dismissive to their children.. She did seem to struggle through her early years like many of us. The only difference was she was put on a world stage no fault of her own with no love and guidance. I didn't mean any disrespect in my earlier comment. Truly I have long to mean her a Lily Tomlin because I think that would get a Kick out of my story being a Women's Rights Activist and me at 18 years old 1983 became the youngest Female Contracting Foreman at 5ft-5in and 117lbs. Rod Busting Boss by 26 in 1991.
