Air embolism in divers is the same as ventilator barotrauma. It is caused by breath-holding on ascent. Decompression sickness is an entirely different mechanism of injury and short of catastrophic decompression, does not mimic the same symptoms. Hyperbaric oxygen is a definitive treatment but not widely available 24/7. These cases are some of my favorite simulations! Great discussion! #SimTribe

Hi doctor, great information. I was looking for some information on air embolism. Recently it so happened to me that while I was receiving iv anesthesia and I thought the anesthesiologist will prime the IV extension before pushing the medication. But I saw she just pushed the air before pushing propofol. I fell asleep. After the procedure I was very concerned if that is her way of doing. Even though it is a small amount may be 2-3 cc that should not be done on daily practice. Am I right. During my next visit I am planning to talk to my doctor. I hope I don't have a PFO.

My grandmother is in the ICU at the moment for a stroke that she experienced during a varicose vein procedure. She was at a small hospital in Texas and was given Valium prior to beginning the procedure. She closed her eyes and became unresponsive with right sided weakness. Careflight transported her to the nearest hospital in a major city to receive a higher level of care. The procedure was done on her right leg but being that she has a PFO, she experienced a left brain stroke. I have not seen the CT scan or MRI but was told it was a large stroke. Plans are to extubate today; she remains with right sided weakness. No excuse for this! We are very sad that this procedure led her to this.

I work at a sort of factory and have been using a compressed air machine to clean parts for 3 days now. I’ve been blowing the pressurized air on my skin quite a lot like whenever I get an itch, I know It sounds stupid but do I need to go to the hospital? I don’t feel unwell but I’m scared af after looking up air embolism

Grainger says to never use compressed air on clothes or human body ; as little as 5-10 psi can give air embolism .
