Stay on top of it. My wife Christine Antoneo Smith had a PE on December 23 rd 2015. High doses of blood thinners, intubation and CPR were useless. The doctor and nurses fought for her for 5 1/2 hours. She was only 41....it was the only PE she ever had.

I’m a 27 year old male and I have an acute PE in my right lung. Just diagnosed a week ago, only caught through my blood work. My D dimer was .54 and I had multiple symptoms like outer chest wall pain right below the breast bone, back and shoulder pain, sharpness in my lung when breathing. I went to urgent care 8 months ago for the same reason and only got an x-ray, my lungs looked great and the doctor believed it was just a muscle thing. Just because I’m young, she didn’t suspect I would have a PE. I’m so glad I went back to find out what the issue is and be able to resolve it now.

My husband just got out of the hospital for acute pulmonary embolism. He has to take blood thinner for 6 months. But he is still having a hard time catching his breath and pain in his side like under his arm. In January he broke his ankle and they did a scan of his chest in the emergency room and said he had pneumonia. Fast forward he just had his gallbladder removed last week and was rush to the hospital because he was in so much pain he couldn’t really move and this was 5 days after surgery. This emergency room did a scan of his arteries and they said he had small clots in both lungs. We spent 4 nights in the hospital and he was sent home with xarelto And tramadol. I really believe the hospital that said he had pneumonia back in January missed the clots. I’m praying to god my husband makes it through this…

I had a pulmonary embolism back in 2010. I also had DTV and endocarditis. I ended up being flown to Toronto, ON. and getting antibiotics, and then undergoing emergency open-heart surgery. My cardiologist said with the number of blood clots in my system, he was surprised I hadn't had a heart attack or a stroke. I was also given 2 weeks to live if I didn't have surgery. It was a fun time.

Recovering from a PE just this last week. 61 yr old non-smoker, I sit at a workbench 40+ hours a week with no exercise at all. Picture of health otherwise. Couldn't catch my breath and then the CT scan showed the bad news. Doctor said I was 12 steps away from the widowmaker. Thank God for blood thinners. Get your sorry butt up and walk around.

I spent 10 days in ICU in Feb w/ multiple PEs, including saddle PE, I had 2 emergency emolectomies. The PEs cane from DVT in my leg after I tore my ACL. The hospital staff & doctors made me feel relatively calm, but researching now after the fact I realize just how close to dying I really was. Thanks so much for this video. I never thought anything about blood clots until I was in a cycling accident on July 12 of this year that resulted in a pelvic fracture (thankfully stable and no surgery) and subsequent DVT in my right calf and clots in my lungs. The first sign for me was the left chest pain, 2 days later right chest pain and shortness of breath. I have been in the ER and hospital the past 2 months way too many times. The lack of information for clots has been frustrating to me. I am also an endurance athlete which I found out is another reason for blood clotting. Thanks again for the education.

This is about PE's but with a slight introduction: I just came back from having an EKG and was told how my LBBB (Left Bundle Branch Block) was no longer there. The Doctor said he had NEVER heard of this ever happening in is entire career. I came home (very short of breath, but do have copd), and started searching the net for hours and could find nothing on why LBBB's just go away until I stumbled into a post graduate medical journal which did case study on a 61 year old man who had always had an LBBB and the only time it didn't show up on an EKG was when he was in ER with a PE. After they cleared up the PE, his LBBB was back on the EKG. I'm going to my Doctor tomorrow, as I once had a d-dimer test that came back at 2050, yes 2050, but there were no clots - just a lot of inflammation. But, I'm not ignoring what I read tonight.

I'm male, was 48, and thought I had pneumonia. I spent over a month going back for x-ray after x-ray. The x-ray techs, I was told later, thought I had lung cancer. Eventually I could only walk a few feet before feeling faint and having to cling to walls and furniture. My blood pressure became very low. Finally, a blood test -- I don't know what kind -- indicated heart damage and sent me to an ER. I was told the tops of both lungs had died, that my pulmonary artery was filled with clots, and that I should have been dead already. The cause was a condition called APS, which was apparently part of my undiagnosed lupus. I mention this because I didn't see APS listed in the video. I've read that APS most often occurs during pregnancy, which was listed, but obviously I was not pregnant. I was given a clot-buster (TPA?) and kept in ICU for 5 days. That was eight years ago. I did eventually try to go back to work, but my lupus journey was just starting, and I am now disabled. I still take Warfarin every day, keeping my INR between 2.5 and 3.5, and that seems to prevent clots from building back up. I hope this little study adds to someone's understanding of what can happen. Sometimes it really is lupus! (and APS)

I just had multiple extensive pulmonary embolisms. I was first misdiagnosed with costochondritis by my pcp. I'm 33, non-smoker, and had just started using Nuvaring for BC. My only symptom was chest pain and it was severe. It hurt to breathe and,to laugh even, and the ER Dr. Promptly did a D. Dimer on me when I went in, followed by all the other tests and being admitted to ICU. I am blessed to be here still.

+Suzanna Oglesby you are too young to be getting blood clots. More investigation needs to happen such as a hypercoagulable workup etc. Make sure to follow up with you doctor and follow their advice.

I had this the doctors said it was among the worst they had ever seen and were confused how I was even walking. FTW it’s worth here were my symptoms: I noticed red splotches on my calf. No swelling. A few days later I started getting pain in my upper calf. A few days later my calf started swelling, slowly but surely. After about a week it began to hurt so badly I was limping. Additionally I started experiencing on and off shortness of breath. Maybe once a day for an hour or so. Then the shortness became worse and i could it walk for more than 30 minutes without having to sit or lay due to fatigue. Finally my calf swelled so much I could not walk on it. Went to PCP she told me most likely DVT so went to ER. They did emergency surgery and aspirated the majority of clots. Since then I have been on Eliquis. Ps. The reason I had so many PE’s was due to internal bleeding I was having for months prior. I hope this helps anyone curious about my experience anyway. Best of luck.

My small clinic doctor missed my PE. I told him I felt exhausted and awful, had sharp throbbing pain on one side of my ribcage. I also told him I thought I might have a clot in my calf, and that I had just flown several hours the day before. I asked him to do an EKG, and it was normal, other than tachycardia. He palpated my leg, said there was no clot, just said it was a muscle strain and sent me home. 36 hours later I called the ambulance. By then the pain had moved to the left side, and my whole ribcage fet tight. Hospital immediately suspected PE, and did CT angiogram. I had 2 large clots in each lung, and several smaller ones. They told me I was very lucky I didn't die.

Awesome presentations. I am not a doctor but I am a former semi-elite runner so I know my body pretty well. I am 53 and can't run anymore due to osteoarthritis in my hips and knees. Right hip is bone on bone but I am too young for hip replacement. I have been biking all summer so I was alittle surprised when I was diagnosed with Pulmonary Emblolism in both lungs, today as a matter of fact. Had DVTs in both legs and ended up with extensive embolisms in both lungs. Almost died. Four months later I seem to be over it. Used to be a hard core mountain biker. Now I can bike on the sidewalk around the block but I am improving little by little.

FYI for anyone concerned about DVT and clots. I had NO warning or signs but do have high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Woke up and my left leg was swollen,foot had no definition, calf hard as granite and leg was warm. DON'T WAIT DAYS like I did. It's not a strain. I had a massive clot and a CT revealed TWO lung embolisms. Using a catheter/vac they removed 3 and 1/2 ft of thrombus "clot" and I will be on blood thinners forever. Also wear compression stockings. Athletes do and they really work both in preventing DVT and preventing a 2nd event.

My husband suddenly passed away aged 59 last month awaiting double hip replacement surgery from a PE caused by DVT. We had been in to see the surgeon 2 months prior and we asked him about the swelling in his legs and he did not warn us of anything or tell us to go to ER. Same thing with his pain dr. We were concerned and no one thought it was an issue. Tell that to our 13 year old daughter.

I'm going through this right now . I have 3 good size clots in the lungs . I'm in pretty good shape and a non smoker . The only way I knew I had it was that my heart rate went up to 130 just going up 13 stairs . I felt a little dizzy and weak . I felt no pain in my lungs or heart at all . I wear a garmin watch that shows my heart rate so I keep a pretty good eye on the heart rate at all times .My rate was staying at around 100 instead of the normal 70 . Before this happened I would have to walk on the tread mill at a good pace for over 2 miles before my heart rate would get up to 130 so I knew something was not right . I told all this to the local emergency DR and he sent me down the hall to get a scan with die injected . He found the clots right away . He started me on blood thinner right away . My oxygen level was around 87 . It took about 1 week before my oxygen level went back to 96 -97 I think the clots came from a week long coughing spell I went through the week before this all started .. I might have had covid . I did not get checked for it . I had just about stopped coughing all together for a few days and then the high heart rate happened . I did not feel any pain in my legs or any extremities . The Dr checked all my veins and heart valves and every thing was normal . He didn't know where the clots came from . One odd thing happened at the end of the week long coughing spell ,I got Cubital tunnel syndrome . My 2 fingers are still numb today a month later . My Dr is sending be to a hand specialist . I'm not sure if the pulmonary embolism had any thing to do with it or not .

Great video! What about the MTHFR mutation, would that be a risk factor as well? being that someone with this mutation such as myself is more prone to blood clotting. I've been having sharp shooting pains where my heart is or around there anyway sometimes it'll be on the right side too and its worse if I breath in deep but it doesn't last long. I've had this issue for over a year now maybe close to 2 yrs 😞 and I get heart palpitations

Great simple breakdown of etiology, pathogenesis, clinical manifestations ect. I would have loved to hear the risk factors broken down in term of Virchow's Triad for simplicity sake. I feel like my brain works so backwards (i.e.you say... "not providing prophylaxis" I want to hear you say, "the risk is venous stasis") 6 of one, half dozen the other I suppose :) Anyway, still watching all MEDcram videos, love them!

Yes crazy. Day two in the hospital. was walking on earth breathless for a week. I was on my way to make a relief as a bus driver in san Francisco. Walked on block, turned the corner, and bam! my heart is pounding! my chest is tight, and i couldn't catch up with my breathing. Thought it was anxiety because i had that 15 years ago. Got to my relief point. Took over the bus. And was driving in San Francisco, Dizzy, with a full load of people! After driving for 8 hrs. I would. bring the bus to the yard. There was a mild ascending 50 yard walk to the office. When i got to the top. I had to sit down for 10 minutes. This same scenerio went on like this for a week. The final straw was two nights ago. went to sleep. i use a cpap machine and usually fall asleep in 30 min. Not this time! My hearts. pounding like i ran a sprint. 911 and ambulance. Got to the hospital. They ran a wire. through my right wrist, looking to see if i had any blocked arteries in my heart. All crear. Then they did a cat scan. BOOM! two large blood clots. One on each lung! The looks on their. faces, is saying it all. Like how are you here. At first. the young doctor said they are going in to suck them out. After. talking with his colleagues. They told me that it would be better to let the body dissolve the clots with medication. Im on Heprin and other meds now. I hope they are right. And if i didnt have "The good insurance, I wouldnt be texting this right now. Thanking God, with all my Heart.

I'm 26, female, nonsmoker, on an OCP, and have multiple non occlusive PEs. Not sure why yet except for maybe caused by OCP. I also have peripheral edema, myalgia, and arthralgia, which don't seem to line up with the PE symptoms (chest pain and shortness of breath). My oxygen is fine and my heart and lungs sound great, had an echo and the preliminary results are normal. I was diagnosed with an elevated d-dimer and a CT scan of my chest. So yeah for now I'm just chilling on furosemide and Xarelto and seeing a hematologist in a few months.

Hi my mother diagnosed with PE in CT scan with a contrast. There is a thrombus in the left main pulmonary artery initially given LMWH injections for 5 day’s and then shifted to PRADExa tablets. Will this thrombus go away? how many days will it takes to dissolve thrombus. Currently there’s no signs of DVT.

I am so sorry. I just lost my Dad to a pulmonary embolism a few days ago.

Just got out of the hospital from pulmonary embolism, still have a long way to go to feel better. Still have pain and SOB if I move to much. The doctor who sent me to the ER said you could die from this, I believe him now.

I had a weird sharp pain in my left foot, and then I had sudden shortness of breath and fast heart rate. No coughing, and no severe pain. It was just a sudden rush of chest tightness and then I think I went into a full fledged panic attack. I felt better after about 2 hours of the attack coming and going. I slept it off and worked today. I thought it was a panic attack, but I'm just wondering if it was a PE, would I have recovered? Would I be okay right now? Should I go get some blood tests or see a hospital? I feel fine at the moment, I can breathe normal and I feel normal. I'm just so anxious that maybe it was more than panic.

I am pretty sure I have a dvt I had one 4 years ago, which didn't result in PE, I have varicose veins, 2.5 inches of swelling in my affected leg, hard leg, pressure pain, can't walk, redness, hot calf, pregnant currently. Of to hospital in a few hours in agony from putting my foot on the ground. 💔

I don’t understand how you get this from a Bbl , is it if the fat is inserted into a major vein , or can it just be when the fat has gone into the blood stream
