I'm 59 years old and baled hay at least 35 of those years. never really looked much at the knotter until I bought this New Holland 275 baler. Check out my video and how I fixed it.

I just spent the last 3 days slowly baling with this machine. Its worked very very well.

New Holland has THE best operators manual for maintaining and repairing balers. Agree on your pto. Make sure the plunger is properly timed with the knotter. The manual will tell you how. Chain length is critical. NH calls out the # of links in the chain. Chains stretch over time and when replaced some folks used the old chain for length instead of counting the links. That puts the plunger out of time with the knotter by as much as 2 links and will cause missed knots in heavy hay slugs. Once the plunger is properly timed to the knotter, it'll bale like it was new.

Great addition. Yes new holland is the best info but people like you with years of experience are a great asset. My video was to note 1. The dirt issue 2. The rust issue and 3. A suggestion to carefully watch the slow operation of the knotter. Thanks!

Square bales are the best. Just a little more work.

Sorry if you didn't find what you are looking fir. I will be refreshing a baler using the kicker from this baler. The one shown is actually just worn out all through it not to mention the rust.

I'll be posting an additional video. I have solved a knot breaking problem as the knot was caught in the baler and pulled apart.

keep it out of weather all year is the #1. You can always tarp it. Js

Absolutely! Sometimes though, when it's just you and a storm is on the way and you have a load of hay - something gets wet. Good advice though!

Your "Clunk!- Clunk!- Clunk!" is from your front drive shaft being 90 degrees off in timing. Note the front PTO yoke @ 13:18
@thewayidoit8895 Жыл бұрын
@mikegoodman447 I am explaining that issue and never noticed it on that shaft. For a ordinary shaft to cancel out the acceleration and deceleration though the input and output shafts must be parallel. My carrier bearing is upside down. I imagine that when it was moved the shaft may have been removed and installed "out of time"
@mikegoodman447 Жыл бұрын
@@thewayidoit8895 I have noticed shafts out of time for decades. First thing I look at.. It all happened one day when I was shortening a shaft on my hot rod Camaro and the thing was out maybe 20 degrees from the factory. Always look for it. I am amazed at how well they run even out of time.
@daver14276 ай бұрын
Many early square shafts lacked a timing 'bump' on one shaft and a slot in the receiving square hole. the shafts could be assembled 1/4 turn (90*) off. Later that bump and slot was added to make it impossible to assemble 90* off.

It's advisable to run the knotting cycle slowly by hand to be sure all is well. Make sure noting hits and nothing is too loose. Be sure all the springs are in the right place too. Thanks!

I can tell you definitely know more than most about these knotters and don't mind teaching a little. My 2 billhooks sit at a slightly different angle. Like one sits pointing at 8 oclock and the other points at 7 oclock. I think they're held with a pin to the gear so there shouldn't be any room for adjustment. Any idea why this would happen and if there's any adjustment?
@thewayidoit8895 Жыл бұрын
Honestly, I don't know. They do make different bill hooks for different knitters. Maybe its the wrong one. I'd probably remove both and compare them.
@thewayidoit8895 Жыл бұрын
Second thought, can you rotate one or the other to the same position? Perhaps there is wear on the gear that drives them.
@JMo268 Жыл бұрын
@@thewayidoit8895 I'm thinking its gear wear too. At the moment its doing a good job but this winter I may look at replacing worn parts and definitely the billhooks themselves. This past winter I replaced all the plunger bearings and carriage bearings. Not cheap!

The U-joints are also 'timed'... meaning if they are not properly aligned, *1/4 turn off, they can bind. THAT can cause that knocking noise. AND break them!
@thewayidoit88956 ай бұрын
Yes! Conventional u-joints must be used in pairs. When tge shafts have angular misalignment the u-joint causes the center shaft to speed up and slow down, this is negated with a "timed" 2nd u-joint. The angular misalignment should be the same with both u-joints as well. Do you agree?

What makes needles brake on a 268 hayliner when its in time??
@thewayidoit8895 Жыл бұрын
I'd really want to confirm it's in time. It's possible they had previous fatigue and broke. Generally for the needle to break it needs mechanical interference = not in time.
@ethanlee9441 Жыл бұрын
@The Way I Do It could it be that my hay dog springs are wore out or maybe my knotter clutch??
@thewayidoit8895 Жыл бұрын
@@ethanlee9441 dog spring I doubt but the brake possibly. If you observe the knotter action you should see if the needles stop AND remain in the right position. It's possible they could "drop" enough to swing in the way of the plunger. When mine has done this though it always breaks the shear bolt in the flywheel.

Love you! The new Holland information seems to be gone. This baler is worn out and I'm switching over to another and will be doing a video. I speak with plenty of useful details if you are willing to listen but with most people it's easier just to show them as we process what we see much better than what we hear.
