I am a new subscriber although I certainly have enjoyed many of your previous Goal Zero Yeti videos. IMHO, your channel is an oasis to existing or potential Goal Zero Yeti owners. Not many "recent" Goal Zero reviews out there these days. It's all about brands like Bluetti, Jackery, EcoFlow, Inergy and Point Zero, with very little interest in Goal Zero products. As a Goal Zero Yeti 1400 owner, it's nice to "come home" to your channel. Looking forward to more of your videos! Thanks.

Hi Todd! Thanks for another great video. I tested my system yesterday . I used my GZ 3000 to air condition my 12x12 ft. den. I ran my portable a/c unit 10 min. on and 20 min off. I also used two very small swamp coolers continuously . Three 100 watt GZ solar panels to replace energy. I have a Honda 2200 and two GZ quick chargers for evening hrs. Still a work in progress. Both you and GZ are the best!

Hi all - I've heard in the comments that the Goal Zero MPPT module on the Yeti X can handle higher voltage panels than the 22v max they state in the specs. According to a thread with GZ tech support, the MPPT can accept up to 48v panels but don't state that to avoid people accidentally plugging high voltage panels into the PWM ports and causing problems. I haven't tested this myself to confirm so try at your own risk. See the thread started by Daniel Nash below...

@@todd.parker After initial testing I am very happy that my 42 volt OC solar panels are working with the MPPT add on module that came with my Yeti 3000 lithium. The higher voltage is really helping through the cables as far as voltage drop is concerned. My solar panels are 50-60 feet away from the Yeti.

At least on the yeti 1000 with an MPPT installed. They had me scared of pushing it half that far. So again, thanks. Thanks! I’m in New England so pretty far north. I’ve also found that when lying flat panels produce 30-45% less energy than when angled properly. These micro Goal Le ones are more of a solar blanket style where you toss a bunch out and get what you can vs. hyper optimizing each panel.

Appreciate the videos Todd. Watched a few of them and decided to purchase the Yeti 1500X, two GZ 100 BCs, a TP 60W and TP 120W. All four panels connected to the Yeti via the 4x8mm to APP combiner. Have not been able to get input over 300W yet, but it doesn't help that I'm also using four GZ 8mm 30FT extensions (Yeti is in basement while panels in backyard). GZ just released a 30 ft APP extension which I'm planning to try out - much cleaner run with just one cable from yard into the basement instead of four. FYI - with my 1500X, I cannot use the both 8mm inputs at the same time (the MPT one in the front, and the one under top cover). Seems like its just one or the other. Must be something you were able to do with the previous gen Yetis only.

Nice setup! 300w isn’t that surprising since you’re lucky to get 75-80% of the rated input on a panel under the best conditions. The 8mm extensions are only 16ga wire so you’re right about losses. Even combining up front and chaining 2 APP cables might be much better, or buy/make a super heavy duty APP cable. It’s super odd you can’t use both 8mm inputs at once. I like the inboard MPPT but not sure if the new ports are much of an improvement

Minor point - In the Q&A section for the MPPT module product page, GoalZero specs the MPPT as 325W max, unfortunately. I wish they had made the MPPT module like so many others with a higher input voltage rating, so we could go with panels in series (higher voltage) and drop the amps, leading to less power loss in the cabling. @@leftofone Maybe that's true but there are big warnings on the MPPT module and the specs on their site say: Do not exceed 22V input under standard use 8mm Charging Port (input): 15-22V. Do not exceed 150W (10A) per port Power Pole Charging Port (input): 15-22V Their info is always very vague and contradictory.

Yeah, I don' think people appreciate that folding portable panels are pretty delicate and can only be deployed during nice weather and can get quite dirty compared to a harder surface

I forgot to mention that to hook this many panels into the Yeti's Anderson Power Pole (APP) inputs, I used a pair of Goal Zero 4x 8mm to APP combiner cables. Links to that cable and all panels I used are in the description. Enjoy!

Do u think the new Yeti 6000x would be able to power a home without any electric with the solar panels? So if I have no electricity let's say, and I have the Yeti 6000x along with the solar panels, will I be able to live without paying electricity for a house foresay?

@@fightsandfinance7570 It all depends on how much energy you use. Look at your electric bill to see how many kilowatt hours you use per month (KWH), divide that by 30 to get a rough idea of use per day. I use 20-25kwh/day at my house, or the equivalent of FOUR Yeti 6000s. With 9,000 watts of solar I can cover my electricity for the year but I'm grid tied so that acts as a battery and evens out the shortfalls in the winter with more sun in the summer. To be off grid, you need enough storage to go for at least 3-4 days without solar for when you have a snowstorm or just bad weather. For me, I'd need 75-100kwh of storage to meet my needs or 12-15 Yeti 6000s. For solar, you basically get ~5 hours/day of power generation and panels output 80% of rated power so an 1,000 solar array would give you 800w x 5 = 4kwh of storage/day under ideal conditions so you wouldn't even be able to refill the 6000 so you'd want a small propane or gas generator to recharge if the sun isn't enough. If you have a small off grid cabin with light electrical needs (lights, tv) you can get by but to run a real house off grid, you need 2-4 Tesla Powerwalls at a minimum.

@@todd.parker That makes sense, what about a few marijuana LED lights to grow some weed in the car? I'm just hoping the batteries in the Yeti wouldnt get too warm in the car. And I think marijauana plants require only 12 hours of light so I would be able to charge the Yeti for the other 12 hours. I was just thinking, if I get 2 Yeti 6000x and get the solar panels later as I want to grow weed in my car at the moment. But later when I buy a house, I can get the solar panels and get a lot of them and just use the 2 Yetis strapped to a lot of solar panels. But for now I'm focused on growing weed in my car. I looked at the battery station from EGO, but I like the Yeti one more. What do u think?

@@fightsandfinance7570 Well, this is a new one. You can use the same math as above to calculate the power you'll need. I think the solar power you'd need to charge up a pair of 6000's would be a lot bigger than the footprint of a car but yeah it would work. The EGO power station isn't a great option unless you already own a lot of their batteries. They just came out with a solar charger option but it's extra. The Yeti 6000 is more of a plug and play way to go.

Curious of your flow chart to the mppt and the on board pwm.. Hey. I'd seriously consider looking at other brands at this point. Goal Zero's offerings are very out of date - slow chargers, limited solar input, short lived (and dangerous) NCM batteries, etc. If you have that kind of budget, I'd suggest you look at the EcoFlow DELTA Pro or Bluetti AC200MAX or AC300 or 500 because they are all a much better value and more modern.

Yep, I think it’s fine. Keeping the battery at 100% is a bit stressful on it (better to store at 60% but that’s kind of ruins the backup use) so just go for it. I keep mine plugged in.

Depends on which port you use but you should be able to connect 4 x 100w panels with pairs in series. Just stay within thes limits: Charging port (input, 8mm): 14-50V, up to 10A (150W max) Charging High Power Port (input): 14-50V, up to 50A (600W max)

Is the way they are all plugged in hitting a series tip and as such any shading is amplified in terms of loss? I have the legacy yeti 400 (pwm 120w max only) but already have built a MPPT additional circuit to utilise the side chaining port but now give me better more efficient input.

I've been thinking about this video because I did it before I knew as much as I do now. I assume that everything you plug into a controller is being connected in parallel so all these mixed panels and shading were probably pretty inefficient. Good call on using an external MMPT port.

All the TP panels come with a 8mm adapter so you can just plug them right in since they are 19v. I used gaffer's tape to make sure the adapter tips don't fall off. The newer 100w and 120w panels have changed to output 25v which is too much for the older Yetis (22v max) but will work with the X line and MPPT module. They give you a 19v step down adapter but it's limited to 60w which isn't great.

Another great and informative video. I have been using the TP-Solar 120W and am very happy with it. On optimal days and hourly babysitting, I get 75-98W. I reluctantly returned the Boulder 200, which was fantastic but just too heavy and impractical for my setup (power outage emergency and deploying panels on my south-facing driveway). I ordered 2 more TP-Solar 120W and yesterday tried to combine them all. Didn't work. After a call to Goalzero and another experiment I found out that the voltage of the 2 new 120W was 25V and not the typical 19V. What a bummer. When I used the 2 new one (same 25V), and laying on the driveway, I got 150W. Thats great, but have to return them bc they have to be 19V. @Todd - just curious: are ALL your panels from the different vendors and types outputting 19V? Seems this is the standard for most foldable panels

My TP panels seem to output less than 22v which is GZ’s limit. We’re you combining them from the 4x 8mm to APP cable? You might want to ask TP solar, maybe you got a bad unit? I’ve connected a ton of panels to my yeti and they all seem to work fine. They have good support.

Just heard from someone that goal zero support said the MPPT module can handle up to 48v but they don’t advertise that because if you plug a high voltage panel into the PWM it will damage it. I haven’t confirmed this but the higher voltage might work fine with the MPPT...

@@todd.parker yes, the MPPT in the X line can handle up to 50V. Higher voltage is also good for longer extension cables (mine is 40ft). The only issue is compatibility. I have to ensure ALL solar panels are at the same 25V. Makes it harder to mix & match from different vendors. I'm getting 1 TP-Solar 120W replacement tomorrow. Let's see if the 19V or 25V "variant" shows up. BTW, i didn't find any TP-Solar support info. Is it in your links?

No, the 19v port and 8mm adapter is all I’ve used for the TP panels. You might have gotten a defective panel but if you have a multimeter you can test the output first

How are you connecting the panels? Are they in parallel or series? If series it’s possible you exceeded the max voltage of the controller (series adds the voltage). Careful because that could break the charger

@@grvrs796 Yeah, parallel sums the amps and leaves the voltage the same as one panel, you may need to buy a parallel cable but this handles to to 50A though the high power input. Depending on the panel voltage, you could do a pair in series then parallel those pairs. If you exceed the voltage you can fry the charger but extra amps are just ignored

I’m trying to figure out if I should buy the regular parallel cable or the 3 one. The sum of amps on the 3 panels is (2) 11.47A and (1) 12.45A = 35.39A total, and V (2) 21.8V (1) 20.23V = 63.83V (which was the reason it wasn’t registering the charge in series because it exceeded the max V capacity like you said. @@grvrs796 Sorry, I wasn't looking at the panel specs. There are some advantages to maximizing the voltage like reducing losses but it's important to have matching panels in even numbers for that to work. For your case, I'd just go with parallel. It looks like you're using 2 different kinds of panels which ends up being limited by the lowest performing panel in the set so you might want to test if you get better results with 2 matching to 3 mixed panels.

Hi Todd Hi have a yeti 1000 and its new, i use it a few times and in this months its starts to lose charge and dont want to charge with the solar or wall charger. I try to reset with the buttoms on your video and its stay the same way. Goal zero said to me, to Open the bottom of the unit, to unplug and plug the battery again, but dont work. Any ideas?

Yep, that would work for the APP input. If you have the MPPT, you could akk look so try using one pair in series and the 3rd solo to see if you get more power, might not matter

​@@elsandypants84 The Yeti 6000 can handle up to 50v and 50a of power (up to 600w max) through it's Anderson inputs. Those panels are 22v so you'd want to connect pairs of them in series via the MC4 cables so you'd have 44v. To connect in series, you connect the + from one panel to the - on the other and use the remaining +/- to run into the next step... You then connect those pairs together in parallel which keeps the voltage the same but sums the amps. You can connect up to 3 pairs for 600w. Those have small inverters so they are best for charging laptops and small AC devices like a camera. Maybe you could power a small TV

I think you can, yes but the output of the Yeti is just a standard 120v. Looking this up, seem the 30A plugs are 120v but the 50A are 220v so I think you're good.

With a lot of solar or wall input, the internal fans turn in but aren’t very loud
