ALL Mr Banks' videos should be required viewing for ANYONE interested in modifying internal combustion engines - not just diesel but petrol/gasoline, actual gas (propane, CNG or hydrogen) engines because most of the basic concepts and details are applicable to them all. Volumetric efficiency, charge temperature and density, pumping losses, optimising parts, etc. I've been around engines for over 40 years, off and on, and while I'm aware of most of what he says, there's always something that I forgot or hadn't considered - these videos are pure gold! About the only thing I'd like to see - if I missed it, please correct me with linkies - is the importance of getting the valve seat area shapes correct for optimising low lift airflow, as this is more critical with diesels due to limitations in duration and lift that can be used. I've picked up a lot of low lift flow working in this area, and significant torque gains, as the valve opening is effectively increased from the unshrouding of the seats themselves.

I would love to see what effects water methanol and just pure water injection has at this point, leaving everything else constant. I think a lot of people (myself included) are at the limit of their turbocharger or fuel system but are looking for a little extra power so it would be interesting to see if water methanol will offer any benefits at this point by improving MAD. Also curious if nozzle location has any effect i.e. installing directly at the after-cooler exit to allow maximum time for evaporation or direct port injection. Two things I'd love to see, are pulling the ancillaries off the front of the motor and using a second turbine exhaust side to drive them, see how much power that frees up... And a comparison between the stock setup EPA test mileage and the current configuration doing the same test, to see if there's been a gain in mileage for fixed amount of fuel used. The latter will tell us how much further a truck with this set up will go when driven normally.
@Karjis4 жыл бұрын
PiDsMedia Remember that turbine energy is not free, it increases counter pressure for first turbine making it effectively same thing as too small exhaust. But if engine is not near any limit of course that can de done.I remembered Scania doing this at early 90's and it seems Volvo was doing it more lately. Detroit also mayde had these. Basically same thing but auxliary equipment also works full power when idling.
@PiDsPagePrototypes4 жыл бұрын
@@Karjis - I was thinking later, it'd also need a wastegate to control the ancillary turbine speed, to have the accessories running at optimum speeds, rather then varying up and down. I’m wanting to push my Mercedes 5cylinder 2.7 diesel to 270 with stock injectors and pump! So as long as I don’t go over 40degrees of injector duration. I can lengthen the injector duration Instead of going for a bigger injector set. The DPF is removed. And I’m going to make a conical pipe coming off the turbo to drop the exhaust pressure acting on the piston. Increasing the bore to 4 inches. I’d imagine also lagging the first half of the exhaust to help with evacuation of the gasses. Porting the exhaust manifold and both turbo inlet and outlet will also reduce this exhaust stroke pressure. The charge cooler is double the flow and is bar n plate. I have to remove the restrictive turbo noise reducing manifold that attaches to tho outlet of the compressor. Again removing restrictions and heat from the equation. Enabling the turbo to put out more volume per unit of pressure! I can’t believe I’ve never seen these videos before in you tube!! Awesome stuff!!!

I've watched my fair share of dyno videos and in person and no one grabs the in-depth info that I've seen here. If they measure inlet temp, they don't do outlet temp and have no idea what to do with that variable. Everyone needs to measure all these numbers of they are serious about building a powerful And reliable motor. Thumbs up to the Banks organization. These are great training videos.

This is amazing. So you used positive pressure to replace what used to be negative pressure so there really is only the space you need for the engine function. And the same would apply to scavenge. It already has limited space to begin with instead of dead space as previous. Simple flow dynamics lads and Gale you are a genius sir!!! Hats off to you!!!

Mr Banks, You sir are a true educator! And education is important if you want to make power and save bucks along the way. Trial and error is not a good way to go so science and tech is the only way to go. You have made that so much easier and taken the guess out of the equation. I want to thank you for my education watching this series I have learned so much and it is sensational.

Fantastic stuff. This video series will be a great legacy for generations. Your determination to maximize efficiency is what makes you a superior engine builder. If you just want to see what the bottom end will hold, I guess that's just a matter of cylinder pressure and RPM. Crank up your max cylinder pressure. You already know it will hold together at 260, how about shooting for 300!

I just found this video. So informative I had to watch it twice and a couple of segments three times. My suggestions: -a bit more active camshaft profile with little to no more duration but a bit more lift -that will require better valve springs -all of this to support a slightly larger turbocharger I think that will get the engine to 1050 or so... Thanks for the great video!

Great work Gale. Thanks for keeping us all entertained. Here is what I would like to see next and why: 1, Water/methanol injection to understand its benefits on a system that is already highly optimised (has efficient charge cooling). 2, compound turbocharging to see it done in a methodology way (the Banks way!) I am interested in the approaches you use for charge cooling between stages and how much extra plumbing is involved. 3, Propane injection to prove just how much (or little as a non purveyor) is to be gained from it. 4, Nitrous Oxide, because if you haven’t killed the Duramax by this stage that might do it. You say yourself that NOS tanks just aren’t big enough for anything other than specific forms of racing and you should look for performance gains that are available all the time. Thanks again.

Gale, you are an impressive engineer and you have a natural flair for educating folks. Every new video gets my undivided attention. Really enjoy all of the videos on this series. Refreshing to see someone who has had a huge impact on the industry relay accurate information in an easily understood format. Great job Gale!! My vote is compounds, because Air Density Matters. I don’t think most fully grasp the concept of what is possible with properly designed systems which focus on burnable air mass in the cylinder at Intake Valve Close. Hopefully one day we cross paths. I’m looking forward to it.

Incredible videos from a legend. I greatly value watching these from an amazing generation. Thank you
@isaacandruthruss904 жыл бұрын
If the cylinder pressure is limited to 260 bar, the next step is to rev the engine harder. Anything done with NOS or water meth injection will have the effect of increasing charge air density, this will allow a leaner afr at 1000 hp but will not allow an increase in power at the same rpm because they are already hitting the cylinder pressure limit(I assume this limit is imposed by the cylinder pressure sensors being close to maxed out). Therefor the only way forward is to take the rpm up, the water meth injection or NOS will help lower egt's and help cylinder fill to compensate for the smaller amount of valve open time at higher rpm. Possibly could need a larger turbo as you will be passing more flow through it and it could become a choke point on the turbine side. This is fantastic stuff, love your enthusiasm Mr Banks, I hope I am as happy and enthusiastic about my work when I'm an old fella too. Bang that Turkey!

1000+ HP with almost 100% stock internals WOW. Congratulations guys! You should do compound next to see if the engine's behaviour with the compounds is improved over stock for the same 1000 HP, I mean, if the responsiveness is improved. And next to that, expecting that the engine keeps good in health, you should add a Water+Meth system to take it to the extreme. PS: It's a pleasure seeing your videos where you teach something. Thanks for the effort you put into this videos.
